UNIQUE VILLA IN A BEAUTIFUL SETTING

Ourique Villa Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom converted primary school in Alentejal hills sleeps up to 6

This is a special holiday where you may sample the traditional Portuguese lifestyle. You can hear the sheep's bells as they pass over the hills and chickens roam freely around the little cottages and yucca trees of the hamlet. Relax and unwind in a warm climate surrounded by exotic plants and beautiful scenery. Over 50 species of birds were recorded over a 2 week period. House has a jacuzzi bath and dishwasher, 2 shower rooms and huge covered veranda where you can sit surrounded by exotic plants. The house has its own walled garden which is tended with vines and a variety of fruit trees. Whatever season you go in there is sure to be something available for you to pick and sample whether it is luscious grapes, peaches, oranges, strawberries, pears or plums. There are inflatable pools where you can cool off and a sandpit, fun for the children, terracing and bar-b-q. This is luxury you can afford!

The school is the subject of the book Alentejo Magic, available from Amazon.

Transport: We can arrange your car hire for you at the best rate all ready for you to collect from Faro airport when you arrive. Please ask and we will supply a quote. We can also arrange airport transfers.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Saturday we are back from our nice trip in Portugal, but a little sad to leave this beautiful house, because really

what a location, it was extraordinary. How calm and kindness and vegetables donated by Georgina us filled with joy and happiness ..... Thank you, remains calm and peaceful even our children were reluctant to leave the country. The sweetness of the country and its heritage and beaches have delighted .... THANK YOU THANK YOU

PARA DESCANSAR A SÉRIO.

  • 4 of 5
E ainda bem.

FABULOUS HOLIDAY

  • 5 of 5
We had a fabulous holiday at the Sambro school in October. The sky was blue and cloudless and it was HOT. It was T-shirts, shorts and sandals all week. We did a huge amount of walking on the local tracks (you'll need Portuguese Military Maps 1:25000 for this). We did a trip to Zambujeira do Mar one day. It was rather strange to find the place virtually empty although it was so hot. We found a completely empty beach to the north of the town.

The closest shops and cafés are in Santana da Serra. If you want to buy beer you have to ask in the minimarket. The mercearia sells bread (try the Pão Alentejano) and local wine in one-litre bottles. Elaborate shopping can be done in the supermarket in Ourique.

The villa's garden is a good source of the most fabulous-tasting tomatoes and peppers and beans, and other fruits in season. Georgina, the lady who looks after the house, will most likely give you a gift of a dozen of her hens' eggs. She doesn't speak English but that wasn't a problem for me as I've done four years of Portuguese evening classes. The other couple of locals are very friendly (as are the shepherd's dogs) but they don't speak English either. There are also a couple of British-inhabited houses.

We were there after the summer and the entire landscape was scorched brown and parched. I'd like to return there in the spring when the countryside will be a riot of flowers and the storks will be on their nests in Santana da Serra and the cuckoos and hoopoes will be calling.

Monte do Sambro is located 45 mins from Faro,10 mins from the IC1 and A2 motorway, providing easy access to the Algarve and Western coastal areas. Nearby towns Ourique and Almdovar are fast developing as tourist attractions as well as being of immense historical and cultural interest. There are regular local markets to explore. Castro da Cola is an ancient settlement and surrounded by lovely walking country and many local cafe’s and bars to offer refreshment where it is inexpensive to sample the local food and wines. There is fishing and boating on Santa Clara Lake, and horseback riding on the doorstep. The house is located in an area of Ecological Reserve accessed by any vehicle on a Portuguese mountain road, non-tarmacked for approximately 4 kms. The wildlife is of special interest with many rare species of bird, amphibian and even wild boar and deer. The hillsides are planted with olive, cork, oak and eucalyptus trees.
