My husband and I rented Penthouse La Joya for 2 weeks in May 2014. The condo is beautiful, modern, very clean and well maintained. The location is perfect and we spent many hours sat on the roof terrace enjoying the stunning views and walking on the quiet beaches. It took us less than 10 minutes to walk from the condo to 5th Avenue. The condo was very well equipped and the wi-fi connection was good. The owners provided excellent service from our initial contact to a follow-up e-mail after our arrival home. A special mention to Carla who was very approachable and assisted us throughout our stay. We look forward to returning to Playa Del Carmen and Penthouse La Joya.
Third stay at Joya, still one of the best in Playa for view, location, amenities, and location. It's not in the middle of the action , which we like, but any easy walk to it. Also at the edge of a beautiful, barely populated, stretch of beach.
I stayed here for almost a week with several friends, and we loved it so much that we changed our travel plans to extend our stay at Joya. The rooftop pool is simply breathtaking, and unlike many hotels and vacation rentals, there was always plenty of space for everyone to lie out in the sun. We also liked that it was an easy walk on the beach or through town to the center of Playa, but not right in the middle, where it can get noisy. The area has lots of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars; plenty of spots to get a coffee and a pastry (or a cocktail and a burger). However, to save money, we also cooked and barbecued in the condo.
The beach view is a little obscured but more than worth it for the 2-minute walk, and the proximity of laid-back beach bars. We loved Joya and it and it made an excellent base for our vacation!
I'm staying here now and just for fun I was reading the review from 3/30/13 I spit on my IPAD the review was so over the top ridiculous and funny. Not sure what the expectations were but it sounds as though the reviewer would be happier in an all inclusive.
I've been coming to Playa for almost twenty years and have been staying in condos for about the last eight. Joya is among the best places to stay in all of Playa. Yes we were disappointed to see that a portion of the beach was fenced but if you turn left and walk less than five minutes there is 1.3 miles of nearly deserted beach. Five minutes to the right there is tremendous beach activity including two great beach clubs with good food and drink brought to your lounge chairs.
The condo itself is very comfortable with an unbeatable view. We are having TV issues but looking out the window doesn't suck.
As for those annoying "villagers" that is one of the best things about the North end of Playa. It's a blast watching the children have fun.
Food in Playa is one of the draws and yes a car or taxi make getting to it easier but a 15 minute walk on the beach gets you there. We enjoy cooking and have no issues with Joya's kitchen. Even the knives are sharp.
Joya is on our short list for the next visit for sure.
Looks Great in Photos
This condo has many positive aspects: an ocean view from two sides, a great looking kitchen, a good footage, professional and cooperating managers and an overall good look. But it also has many issues and we would not stay there again.
The beautiful view of the ocean is marred by unsightly vacant lot in the front with dilapidated plastic fences, trash piles and hordes of villagers who come over to the beach from various area, playing ranchero music or alike and cooking food and eating them on their cars. The beach area left after the vacant lots is very narrow and packed with villagers and jet ski's in the water leaving oil and smell in the water, so overall you really don't feel like hanging out there with your loved ones and feel safe about your belongings or your life in the hands of zipping jetski's. You can walk a few blocks to the left on the beach itself to get to quieter areas but you just wished you had something closer.
The location had a problem for us as well because it is neither in the heart of nature (say akumal) nor close to all the city action. In fact, our vacation got into high gear once we moved out of the place and stayed on 8th street at the Palms Hotel. That hotel, despite its many issues was still quiet and close to all the live music, ships, night life etc.
The jacuzzi shown in the photo cannot be filled up with hot water. The water heater for the condo is very small and the flow is too small. So after 20 minutes of scrubbing the (light colored) skin scum off it and an hour of slow water flow into it, we ended up with something below lukewarm water. The management acknowledged later that this was an issue and that is why they don't advertise it as a "hot tub" and rather a jacuzzi.
As with many things in Mexico, this condo suffers from poor design. The kitchen has a great appliances but the design is terrible. Despite the good size and open kitchen, the sink, garbage and fridge areas are crammed in a tiny corner. Having two people in the kitchen becomes difficult. We were not impressed by any of the restaurant on the 38th street (6 blocks away) so we had to cook until we moved to the 8th street and close to much better choices.
If you like immediate access to a beach where you can safely lie down or quick access to shops and food, this may not be a great option.
