We currently live in the front house of the property and have been in our home since 1982. We found this lovely property on the way to a Charger game and couldn't resist the custom Spanish style of this 1920's era two on one. We started out renting and we were fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase the property. We were even more fortunate to be married in the back yard; all six kids and one happy St. Bernard. We both grew up elsewhere in California, but we met in San Diego and have lived in our home for 30+ years and can not imagine leaving. The back house (casita) was a rental when we bought and was kept as a rental for most of our time here. Recently, we remodeled and upgraded the cottage into the casita.

Jim and/or Lynne Manner purchased this studio in 1983

We bought here because our work was nearby and schools for our children were close. We are now retired and our children have left the roost. Our home is situated right in the middle of everything that is inviting in San Diego. Neighborhood restaurants and coffee houses are within four blocks. We are very close to high-end shopping malls, the Gaslamp District downtown, Balboa Park, the Zoo, beaches, ball parks, and just 1+ hour from the beautiful and very quaint historic mountain town of Julian.

The casita is located in a quiet neighborhood that is walking friendly and very close to freeway access in all directions as well as public transportation.

Popular Points of Interest (POI) and their distances from the Casita can be viewed on our map.

Home away from home

I have rented 4 or 5 VRBO properties in the past and this is by far the best one yet. We were a late arrival which Jim & Lynne graciously accommodated and upon entering the casita, we were greeted with soft lighting, a personal note from the owners, and home baked chocolate chip cookies! Everything was just as described and then some. The casita is beautifully decorated in warm, southwestern colors and lovingly appointed with everything you need (every time I thought something was missing, I would open another drawer and there it would be!) And don't be fooled by the pictures: the casita is bigger than it appears on the website. It was more than enough room for my husband and I (and he's 6'3" tall). Yes, the bathroom is a bit cozy, but the beautifully tiled shower is very roomy and there's plenty of hot water. Everything was clean as a whistle and the linens provided were plush and colorful. Speaking of plush, this was easily one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in on the road and the pillows were great too--none of the neck and upper back problems I sometimes experience when I'm away.

The location of the casita is perfect. It's in a quiet, eclectic neighborhood with several good restaurants within walking distance (try the Parkhouse Eatery or the Adams Ave Grill. Great pizza at Red House Pizza). It's easy driving distance to all the attractions of San Diego but I really appreciated coming home to the peace and quiet of the casita (and the gurgling waterfall!) at the end of the day. The off-street parking is a huge plus.

Perhaps the biggest reason to stay at the casita is the owners, Lynne and Jim. They are exceedingly generous and gracious and will offer any assistance needed without being intrusive. Once you meet them ( and their beautiful dog Peanut!) , you feel like you've known them forever...and it just makes your stay so much more pleasant. They give new meaning to the phrase, "Mi casa es su casa!" If we come back to San Diego, we will definitely stay here again. I give this property my highest recommendation!!

Relief from winter!

To two winter-weary Canadians, the Casita was a bright and welcome change from endless cold and snow! The photographs on the website are accurate, but the warmth and colour of this little house are even more remarkable than the photos suggest. The space is thoughtfully designed, and from the kitchen tiles to the dishes, bed linens and bathroom towels, everything is of very high quality and beautifully coordinated. Everything that might be needed or wanted is there - an ample supply of pots and pans and appliances, comfortable seating, access to the small, flower-filled garden that belongs to the main house, a large television, a comfortable queen-size bed. We especially appreciated the friendly welcome, the cookies waiting in a basket on the kitchen island, the bottle of wine in the refrigerator, the wi-fi connection and the local maps that had been thoughtfully provided. In this car-dependent city, the neighbourhood is great for walking - good restaurants, cafés, and grocery stores close by, and many attractions only a short drive away. This was our third VRBO experience in California, and it was truly memorable. We'd recommend it with no hesitation. As its calendar shows, it is a popular destination - and for good reason! Thanks to Jim and Lynne for a wonderful though all-too-short stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you Kathy and Pete for your wonderful description of the Casita's ambiance, comfort, functionality, and neighborhood close to all. We are happy that San Diego provided you with a brief relief from the brutal winter this year in Canada and hope to see you again.

The Casita of Charm

We are two escapees from Minnesota cold.
What a wonderful refuge we found in "Casita Del Sol Manner". It's located in such a way you can get to all the fun places and conveniences in San Diego in ten minutes' drive. We totally enjoyed this fairy tale like cottage with all it's charming furnishings and kitchen wares. Everything exceeded our expectations.
TV and Wi-Fi is first rate and the hosts are so wonderfully hospitable that you feel totally at home. They even allowed us to use their garden cabana and BBQ facility for our use.
We spent 2 months' pleasurable stay here and plan to come next year again.
Our stay here was totally satisfactory.

What a wonderful vacation we enjoyed in the Casita Studio! Clean, quiet and far more spacious than we expected. This Casita is located in beautiful University Heights with easy access to all points of interest in San Diego. Take it from a couple that travels around the world. We loved it and are already planning our next stay.

Home Away From Home

This was our first stay at a VRBO property and we found the casita to be delightful. We were in San Diego to spend Christmas with our son, our first time away from home (CT) during the holidays. When we opened the door after a long travel day we found a Christmas tree on the island in the kitchen, Christmas kitchen towels and tablecloth, wine and cookies! Lynne and Jim are very gracious hosts to say the least! The property was accurately described and beautifully maintained. The location of the casita is very convenient as it is easy to get to major attractions in San Diego and also pleasant to go for a walk to coffee shops and restaurants in University Heights. We would most definitely recommend this VRBO property and will be staying again in the future. Thanks again Lynne and Jim for your hospitality, and a hug to Peanut!
