6 miles away from the “Cinque Terre” National Park. 6 miles away from Lerici and the wonderful Poets’ Gulf of La Spezia. 6 miles away from Lunigiana, 'The Land of Hundreds of Small Castles'. On the hills raising from the coast, in the heart of Levante Ligure. This is the strategic position of “Il Fienle dell'Anima' ('The Barn of the Soul') a XVIII century stone barn, built in Ligurian style and located next to a XVII century small church. Built by two pirates escaping from Pisa, it was originally used as a house, then as a farm building to store hay and protect animals in the night. Surrounded by old growth woods, the building has now become a 128 square meters, four-floor, charming house with a fascinating lounge, a great kitchen, a tres jolie dining room and a beautiful bed room under the wooden roof, with a maximum guest capacity of 6 pp. The owner, that refurbished the barn by himself using only materials found sailing or in the property, is a writer, artist and sailor

At the border line between Liguria and Tuscany. The land of sea, of forrests, mashrooms, where every town has a castle and a summer fair. Here life remained easy and simple, the tastes of food are the same of centuries ago. The wine is simple and genuine, the sea still clean and blue. The Gulf of La Spezia is called 'The Poet's Gulf' because artists as Keats, Shelly, Byron and many others lived here and loved this beautiful coast. This is one of the best places for sailing. In few hours is possible to sail from Cinque Terre to the island of Capraia or to Corsica. Two hours driving from MIlan, 50 minutes from Genova, 25 minutes from Pisa. This corner of Italy is very easy to get to, but hard to leave.

A stone old sink, found here during the refurbishment; a line of mosque tiles, coming from the grand bazaar of Istanbul; a coloured curtain that was originally a dress, the typical dress of the Sudanese women, bought in Karthoum; all around the wall, paintings, stone sculptures, pictures and two beautiful windows direct on the garden. A place to stay, not only a bathroom.

  • The bedroom is the heart of the house. Under a wooden roof, on a wooden floor, has three windows, one on the property forest, one on the forest in front of the house, and another one on the garden. surrounded by hundred of books, this is a warm place, where sleeping in the absolute silence. This is also the place where the author writes his novels in the total loneliness of his 'buen retiro'. Every single object of the room, the lamps, the sculptures on the wall, are made by the artist with his own hands, using only materials found in the forest, or along the beach: Ardesia (the typical Ligurian Grey stone), old wood ('one of the reasons why I bought this barn is that was full of old wood to be used for sculptures' the owner said), sailing ropes, fishing nets. A sculpture of a whale, handmade by iron and steel by the artist, surrounds the desk where he is used to work. A Navajo blanket is on the floor, one of the several souvenirs bought during the owner's trips.

This is the house of a writer, an artist, that sails along the Mediterranean Sea during the year and then comes back here for periods, in His Place, to rest, to be alone, to write, to follows dreams and ideas, to work with the stones, with colours, with emotions. This is not a house, this is 'Il Fienile dell'Anima' (The Barn of the Soul).
