About Dr. Gillian Hettinger

English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer.

Dr. Gillian Hettinger purchased this house in 2012

Why Dr. Gillian Hettinger chose Sheffield

This year-round lovely property has everything you want for the perfect vacation getaway--romantic weekend, hiking the Appalachian Trail, skiing, girls' retreat. Peaceful, yet not remote and on a sought-after, very private lake with views -- about a mile off Route 7 in Sheffield and just five miles south of Great Barrington.

What makes this house unique

Stayed on this idyllic lake--beautifully furnished house with everything we needed. Fishing for bass was outstanding and it was a wonderful few days.

We lit the fire a couple of times as it turned chilly a couple of nights...very cozy! Lots to do in area.. We hiked with our dog most days, Mounument Mountain a great one.. Loved Great Barington with all the shops and resaurants...had a lovely meal at Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge too! Lots of nice touches throughout the house including wine for us... Also nice to meet a fellow Brit.... thanks Gillian and Norman!

Elterwater - Beauty, Seclusion, yet Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were very pleased with Elterwater. It is as titled "idyllic", located on a lovely, serene lake in the Berkshires on a New England country road with beautiful historic homes.
The property was clean, well stocked, had comfortable beds and furnishings. We enjoyed sitting on the screened porch in the early evening sipping a beverage and watching the ducks. In the early morning a swan would gracefully glide past the picture window. There was also a canoe available for our use along with paddles and life jackets.

Gillian and Norman were quite accommodating and easily accessible by phone or email.

Elterwater is 20 minutes from Tanglewood, Chesterwood, Norman Rockwell museum, theatres, shopping, biking, hiking and very close to several good restaurants.

We look forward to returning to Elterwater and highly recomend it!

Serene

  • 5 of 5
We just came back from Elterwater & it is very serene and quiet. We were greeted with a nice note with Gillian's contact information and a bottle of wine.
My 15 year old son loves fishing and caught perch, pumpkin seed, & small mouth bass but unfortunately they were too small to keep.
We were out in the canoe everyday, cooked on the grill, and sat in the screened porch until it got dark than we went inside and played some monopoly. The house was better than the pictures & the beds were comfortable. If you want take a ride there are some antique shops, and restaurant's.
If you are looking to get away and have peace and quiet than this is the place. We definitely will be back again. Thanks Gillian and Norman next time we'll have to meet!

Comfortable, Clean and Peaceful get-away

  • 5 of 5
All the descriptions of Elterwater were accurate and the place was wonderful for the two of us and our 3 dogs. We so enjoyed the screened porch and the surrounding area, despite a few mosquitos and the rain. Just a lovely place to relax and read a book, hike, canoe and enjoy the surrounding towns and countyside. Very private yet close to Great Barrington for restaurants or shopping. We would certainly go back for more. The house had everything you would need..and a comfortable bed! Gillian was a pleasure to work with and always responded quickly to any questions we had. If you want a nice home away from home, this is it.

Perfectly Private and Serene - A complete getaway!

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at Elterwater in the evening on Friday night and stayed until Sunday morning. Being from the south west part of Connecticut it was the perfect distance for a weekend away. When we arrived we were welcomed by an adorable, very clean house and a bottle of wine with a note from Gillian saying "Happy Birthday" and all her contact information in case we needed anything. The house was even better than the pictures and the weather was perfect fall weather the whole weekend. We took the canoe out and went fishing. I caught my first fish ever and my boyfriend caught a pretty good size bass. We also saw an eagle flying overhead while we were out there and we were the only ones on the lake. We didn't see any other people the whole time, which is exactly how he wanted to spend his Birthday. We had dinner on the screened in porch overlooking the lake, which was idyllic. I look forward to the next time we need a weekend away because we will be back. I had the pleasure of meeting Gillian and her husband, they are wonderful people and so welcoming. All in all this is the perfect place to "get away from it all" and relax.

Fantastic "Home Away From Home!"

Fantastic "Home Away From Home!"
  • 5 of 5
Spent 4 wonderful Autumn days at this cottage. Very clean & comfortable. Furnishings were fantastic. Felt like home. The screened-in porch was an amazing spot to enjoy morning coffee with mists on the water. We canoed around the lake/pond and spotted several water-fowl, including two swans, herons, and kingfishers. Highly recommend this Sheffield location. Proximity to Great Barrington and Stockbridge give you plenty of options for restaurants and exploring historical sites. Oh, and the "Covered Bridge" in Sheffield is within walking/cycling distance. Owners were lovely to deal with...we would go back to this cottage in a heartbeat!
