English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer.

Dr. Gillian Hettinger purchased this house in 2012

This year-round lovely property has everything you want for the perfect vacation getaway--romantic weekend, hiking the Appalachian Trail, skiing, girls' retreat. Feel the weight of the world fall off your shoulders when you enter and look out at the lake, just beyond the slope to water's edge. Cozy wood-burning fireplace with wood supplied. Peaceful, yet not remote and on a sought-after, very private lake with views -- about a mile off Route 7 in Sheffield and just five miles south of Great Barrington.

200 feet directly on the 100-acre private lake with your own private dock and canoe and protected shoreline across. Enjoy the cozy wood burning fireplace in addition to individually controlled heat in every room. You will never want to leave. All linens provided--just walk in, relax, and enjoy this magical house--you deserve it!

Perfectly Private and Serene - A complete getaway!

We arrived at Elterwater in the evening on Friday night and stayed until Sunday morning. Being from the south west part of Connecticut it was the perfect distance for a weekend away. When we arrived we were welcomed by an adorable, very clean house and a bottle of wine with a note from Gillian saying "Happy Birthday" and all her contact information in case we needed anything. The house was even better than the pictures and the weather was perfect fall weather the whole weekend. We took the canoe out and went fishing. I caught my first fish ever and my boyfriend caught a pretty good size bass. We also saw an eagle flying overhead while we were out there and we were the only ones on the lake. We didn't see any other people the whole time, which is exactly how he wanted to spend his Birthday. We had dinner on the screened in porch overlooking the lake, which was idyllic. I look forward to the next time we need a weekend away because we will be back. I had the pleasure of meeting Gillian and her husband, they are wonderful people and so welcoming. All in all this is the perfect place to "get away from it all" and relax.
Owner's Response: What a fabulous response. So glad you had a great time. We think the house is amazing and a "best kept secret." Do come again--the house is lovely in all seasons and we'd love to have you back!

Spent 4 wonderful Autumn days at this cottage. Very clean & comfortable. Furnishings were fantastic. Felt like home. The screened-in porch was an amazing spot to enjoy morning coffee with mists on the water. We canoed around the lake/pond and spotted several water-fowl, including two swans, herons, and kingfishers. Highly recommend this Sheffield location. Proximity to Great Barrington and Stockbridge give you plenty of options for restaurants and exploring historical sites. Oh, and the "Covered Bridge" in Sheffield is within walking/cycling distance. Owners were lovely to deal with...we would go back to this cottage in a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: We continue to have the nicest possible guests, who treat out home as if it were their own and leave it in immaculate condition. We're so delighted when they enjoy the lake house as much as we do--it's a magical spot and guests feel like friends.

Spacious House, Beautiful Lake

This house is attractive, clean, spacious, un-cluttered and well-equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Its screened-in porch has a fine view of the lake. The lake itself is full of pickerel, bass, and sunfish, which you can get to with the canoe provided by the owners. I would be happy to swim in the lake, but children might hesitate because of the weeds around the dock. We slept well at night: the house is quiet and the beds are comfortable. The owners are charming to deal with. The fireplace is large, with a good screen in front of it. We hope to stay there again.
Owner's Response: We have been fortunate enough to have really lovely guests who appreciate the tranquility of the setting and love the lake as much as we do--it feels like having old friends to stay.

This lovely cottage nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires is a jewel. It was love-at-first-sight. Definitely one of the best experiences I've had over 14 years of vacationing in Sheffield, and I give a lot of credit to the charm of this home and the gracious, attentive service of the owner. She provided all that we needed -- and then some!

My friend fell in love with the screened porch. It was difficult for me to choose a favorite spot, but two of the top contenders were the view of the sun coming up over the lake as we looked through the picture window in the dining area, and also flopping on the couch with a beach book – and a beautiful view of the luscious backyard and the lake through the sliding screen door. Ahhhhh.

We enjoy the many cultural events that fill the calendar in neighboring towns. Great Barrington is just a hop, skip and a jump from the cottage. Tanglewood is a short drive away. The glorious concerts performed at the Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield every year in July are a real treat. I shouldn't be telling you all this because I hope to return next summer and be lucky enough to book Elterwater again.

This is a charming vacation rental. The house and views are even better than the the pictures. It is a truly peaceful location, but you are within minutes of great restaurants and cultural events. We were lucky enough to get to meet and visit with the owners who are as welcoming as the house. I would highly recommend staying here. You won't be sorry!
