I will live on this island someday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here after staying in the owners' other property at the other end of the island. We had a week on the island but could only get the other place for half the time, so we moved here for our last three days at the owner's suggestion. We're so glad we did. I feel like Bill Hader's Stefon character from SNL.....this place has everything: a huge main room, total privacy, a massive garden, and THE WROUGHT IRON DECORATIONS YOU ALWAYS WANTED. It's super-romantic if you have a significant other with you, and you really feel like you're one of the first settlers out there. I live in the middle of a city, so normally I have a hard time sleeping when it's totally silent, but not here. If I ever make a gazillion dollars selling my startup to Micro-oogle-hoo, this place is high on my list for a "name your price" buyout.

Idyllic!!!

  • 5 of 5

I agree with previous occupants that the cabin is simply beautiful with every design detail thought out. Every nook and cranny was filled with books and art and textiles that complete the experience! And, I'm an Interior Designer, so I'm quite discerning = ]...

The home is s-p-o-t-l-e-s-s (sorry Idaho). Look, when you walk barefoot in a house that is in a wooded sylvan such as this, you expect some dirt and grass to be tracked in, but that simply wasn't the case. It really was very clean.

The linens and towels were top-notch and smelled clean and fresh. Again, I'm picky about such things and have stayed in too many B&B's with '$39.95 Bed-in-a-bag' linens and threadbare towels. Thank goodness for peeps that love all cotton as much as I do.

We love to cook and didn't want for anything in that kitchen. In fact I need a new range...the potatoes I made in that oven were legendary! Make sure to visit the Farmers Market on Saturdays in the season and utilize all the goodies in that kitchen.

Now for a just a few little idiosyncrasies...

- Closet space or lots more hooks and hangers in bedroom. Some great built-ins flanking that big window would be great. Just a suggestion.

- As an Interior Designer (again? braggart), I would suggest surfaces closer to the sink in the bathroom for toiletries. Just a cute little dresser or antique commode...when one needs as many lotions and potions as I do to be presentable, one doesn't want to pivot and turn and take two steps in that lengthy process.

- Bedside tables and lamps would be peachy. I need a place to put my book, water, Chapstick, eye drops, nose spray, Kleenex, etc., etc.

- Shades downstairs. I've seen one too many Jason/Michael Myers flicks. I spent an inordinate amount of time asking, "Did you see/hear that?" I'm a scared-dee cat.

All-in-all...the cabin is a beauty and has ALL the amenities one needs for a serene little stay in the woods! It's close to the ferry and the drive to town is three winding road minutes away. Get into the spirit and wave to each passing car. We're Seattle dwelling ex-pats from Texas and that friendliness is the one thing I miss about the South. We'd visit again in a Slo-pez minute!

- Just a little bit of freshening on that side patio...no mas hot tub.

An absolute gem!

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I have been going to Lopez for 25 years and have stayed at Cedar Ridge many times. We live in Seattle and run one of the city's leading bed and breakfast inns. I am a very particular person when it comes to cleanliness and such and the cabin has always been wonderfully clean and the owner has always called to check in and is easily reachable if we have questions. Quite frankly we NEVER want to leave! I can't recommend this place highly enough! We just returned a few days ago and are already planning our next visit to the island and this wonderful hideaway. Lopez is awesome!

Gorgeous Furnishings but ultimate stay? eeeh

  • 3 of 5

First, let me state that the cabin was absolutely gorgeous, both inside and out and the furnishings top notch. But, we did have a couple of items that we think needed to be addressed although some of them very minor things.

A. One of the lights over the sink in the bathroom was out.

B. One of the lights in the fixture over the bed was out.

C. Although, I know you probably don’t have to provide Keurig coffee inserts for the machine - it would have been nice to have some. There were none in the slide out compartment and we had to purchase our own.

D. I’m not sure who you having cleaning but the bathroom was not very clean. The bathtub and shower I had to wash out because of grass and dirt on the bottom (I took pics).

E.Here was the major sticking point with us - When we first arrived, the washing machine was running. Once it was done, I decided to put it in the dryer for whomever had put it there. I was shocked and honestly quite horrified that in the towels that were being washed there was a jockstrap! Even if some people don’t choose to separate their undies from other types of laundry, to have guest towels laundered with someone’s jockstrap is quite disgusting. I had no clue if the towels that were in the bathroom had also been laundered with other undies so I had to wash those before using as well. Not what I was anticipating having to do the first thing on my vacation. Again - I took pics. I have them if you would like them.

After contacting the property manager, she said the owners would look into and they offered me $100 off my next stay. Really, easy to do when I told her we would never be returning to San Juan Islands. I have another friend who has her house on Air B&B in Seattle and she said that if this would have happened at her house with her house keeper, she would have refunded actual money. Not real please with the way they handled it.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words of “absolutely gorgeous, both inside and out and the furnishings top notch,” when referring to my home on Lopez Island. Lopez Island is a peaceful retreat for privacy, adventure and beauty in its flora and fauna and residents. For the last 15 years I have proudly shared my personal home to travelers, paying attention to every detail to make their experience on the island ideal. I have received 187 letters or emails of gracious “Thanks” for enjoying this unique hideaway, many of whom commented on how perfectly clean it was presented. I have NEVER received one other note like yours! I find your primary concern very perplexing and somewhat irrational and paranoid. Had you immediately called to report that you had found one item of personal property in the washer, I could have assured you (1) that we do not wash underwear with our linens and towels and (2) that the item must have been inadvertently left in the washer by the previous regular guest when he washed and his personal running gear after his morning run but undetected by my housekeeper when she put the towels in the washer. I could have also assured you that there were plenty of clean towels in the home and that only the two towels in the washer would have touched this properly washed personal item. In addition, I could have saved you rewashing all the clean towels, and saved our environmentally-friendly island several gallons of water to complete that unnecessary task. Had you called immediately, I could have also sent the local handyman to replace the one burned out light bulb since it was 18 feet above the floor and not easily replaced. Most folks who rent VRBOs in a fairly remote location would understand that a burned out light in a ceiling would require special attention and would be gracious enough to inform the owner at the time it was noticed rather than complaining about it after the visit was completed. I am very sorry a clean personal item in a washer and a single light bulb ruined your time in my “absolutely gorgeous, both inside and out and the furnishings top notch” home. I would suggest that if you stay in private homes without the owner on the premises in the future, you inform the owner at the time you find any discrepancies rather than just complaining publicly after the fact. Island Escape

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were looking for a place that we could relax and unwind from all the stresses of daily life. This place was just about perfect. Secluded, quiet and delightful. We had great weather, but this place would be wonderful even in bad weather. It has a wonderful covered porch with plenty of seating and an amazing river stone fireplace.

We barbequed, played bocci ball (brought our own) and read. When we felt like it, we got in the car and explored the island. Lopez Island has a quaint little village town center with just about everything you need.

Shark Reef Point and Agate beach are beautiful areas to explore.

The log home is wonderfully decorated with antiques and art. The kitchen is great...just make sure you bring your own tin foil and such, they have everything else.

The bed is super comfy and you have a TV in the bedroom and living room with Dish. There is wifi, and free long distance. The bedroom has a deck overlooking the yard and in the morning deer came to feed on the lawn. The only thing lacking in the bedroom were blinds. It would be nice to have some type of window covering for sleeping in...night stands would be nice too :)

They have a hot tub, but didn't advertise it and it wasn't usable at the moment..would love to have had that though!

We really enjoyed our stay and hated to leave. Looking forward to returning again.
