This property is ideal for your personal retreat, a romantic weekend getaway or a fun luxurious stay for two couples!
Stay on-property for your entire visit, or drive or ride your bike downtown into the magical hamlet of Ojai, where the iconic film Shangri La was filmed. Currently famous as the idyllic village hideaway for Hollywood insiders and celebs, Ojai has much to explore.
Downtown restaurants are California cafe casual and offer something for everyone, from authentic burritos to tapas Mediterranean-style, from gourmet deli to LA vegetarian, from homemade pizza to local wine tasting, and four coffeehouses thrown in for good measure.
Natural-foods markets are locally owned, and the picture-perfect Sunday Farmer’s Market is friendly and regionally famous.
Shopping is upscale, with boutiques lining the main drag, and a variety of festivals and events each weekend throughout the year.
For the outdoor explorer, the surrounding back roads meandering through orange and avocado groves and up into the mountains are breathtaking. Ojai's backdrop is the Los Padres National Forest and endless trails wind through the valley. One of Ojai’s most popular network of trails and seasonal swim holes is a 1/4 mile stroll from Red Tail Ranch and can be explored on foot, mountain bike, or horseback, with trail rides organized through a ranch at the trailhead.
For the sports enthusiast, Ojai is a nationally famous golf and tennis destination, home to the golf course at The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, and placed second in a national “tennis town” contest due to it’s perfect weather and pristine open tennis courts. In addition, the lovely Lake Casitas is just 5 miles up the road, with the best bass fishing in California , and a local waterpark for the kids.
Shoppers will find a quaint downtown street of locally owned upscale boutiques and art galleries, including an independent toy store and several quality consignment stores for shoppers who love the hunt. And don’t miss locally famous Bart’s Books, an open air mecca for used books and the people who love them.
Historically, Ojai has served as home to global spiritual and artistic leaders such as Krishnamurti, the Theosophists and Beatrice Wood. Currently, scores of healers, bodyworkers and mystics comprise an active healing community. And local art is everywhere, with frequent studio tours available.
Come treat yourself to a truly special place, a wide open space to e-x-h-a-l-e ....
When I purchased this land in 2000 it was a chemically farmed citrus orchard. I made the three year transition to organic, designed and built the eco villa's and the gardens, diversified, and the culmination of those efforts are this small and wonderful community we now call Red Tail Ranch complete with an organic farm (Mano Farm) and CSA. And yes - there are beautiful Red Tail Hawks here!
Kim McLin purchased this villa in 2000
If you want to experience living in nature but with ultimate comfort, to 'escape it all' but without giving up anything, then you need to spend some time here at Red Tail Ranch. It is a magical and restorative place, a 9000 year old registered archeological site - a milling site of the Oak Grove Indians - productive - the perfect place for an organic farm!
The incredible views, the quiet, the darkness, the stars, the history, the energy, the magic!
Kim accommodated us at the last moment, and we enjoyed every moment in this amazing villa. We stayed only a few days but was just enough time to unwind and relax with the nature that surrounds this place. The villa is cheerfully decorated and feels enough like home to make you comfortable. Not enough can be said about the property, it's filled with wildlife and little treasures hidden amongst the flowers. Bonus: hot tub. I recommend staying here if you want a private, happy, quiet retreat from the fast-moving city. This is a place where you can slow down and take it all in.
I spent 2 nights in the West Villa with 4 friends to celebrate my 30th birthday, and our experience was spectacular. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful, and the kitchen/living room area is perfect for cooking a home-cooked meal whilst socializing. We honestly didn't even want to leave the property because of how gorgeous it is. The details inside (the fresh tulips, books, decor, vintage furniture, artisan soap) and outside (succulents everywhere, lanterns, fire pit, fountains, amazing flora, hot tub with a view that took our breath away) make this home one-of-a-kind. We were about 15-20 minutes away from downtown Ojai, Meditation Mountain, Old Creek Ranch Winery, and the Portero John Hiking Trail. Kim was such a wonderful hostess and answered all of my (many) questions promptly and graciously. I can't wait to come back. This home is a gem. Thank you, Kim!
This home is very special. Located in the western residential area of Ojai, it is in the midst of a small quiet vegetable/fruit farm. The grounds are breathtaking...everywhere you look are gorgeous plants, butterflies, birds. There is a nice hot jacuzzi on the cliff with the whole night sky spread out above. We stayed in the "west" house; everything we could have imagined needing was there....well appointed kitchen, bathroom with a real steam-room shower an fluffy towels, cozy living room with TV and stereo, romantic bedroom. The owner thoughtfully left fresh oranges for us to juice and flowers in every room. In my opinion this is much better than a room in a hotel or spa; we had total privacy. We could wander outside in the morning in our robes with our coffee. Unless you are going to Ojai for a special event (film festival, etc), there's not a lot to do....which is kinda nice! Being unplugged (there is good wifi if you must!) helps put "time" into perspective. We highly recommend this home. It is also a great setting for a small wedding. See yelp for some restaurant reviews.
I surprised my girlfriend with a weekend getaway, seeking a destination more down-to-earth and different than LA. We hit the jackpot with Red Tail Ranch! My girlfriend was practically in tears upon arrival due of the beauty of the property and surroundings.
The clash between the rustic and modern was met perfectly and we really did not want to leave. The outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the mountain-scape was out of a fantasy, the quaint farm behind the property was charming and a serious photo-op, the back courtyard adorned with flora, a patio, and a fountain was just wonderful.
Kim was very accommodating, gave us excellent recommendations, and she has exquisite taste.
We can't wait to come back one day soon!
Simply perfect. We stayed here for a week in November and it was like living in Eden--flowers out every window, birds singing in the morning, bright sun, fruit trees in the back yard. Pictures do not do it justice; it is actually prettier in person. We were thrilled to arrive at night and see that Kim had left lights on for us and picked fresh flowers to place around the house. The ranch has two halves and I believe at this point you could rent both sides if you have a larger party. We rented half the ranch for the week and had plenty of privacy since they are separated by a breezeway. The decor is warm and inviting, and tastefully done. Kim has lovingly designed the ranch with eco friendly features, such as windows that capture light in the morning but not in the noon day heat. The ranch itself is a little ways outside of Ojai, but that made it all the more quiet and relaxing. There are miles of trails nearby, so it is a fantastic spot for hikers and horse back riders alike.
As if this is not praise enough, I have not yet mentioned that we also held our wedding ceremony here. We felt incredibly lucky to have been able to have the ceremony in the yard with the stunning mountains behind us. Our guests enjoyed the intimate setting (30 people) and our photos by Kelly Brown (and her sister Erin) captured the day perfectly. We had our reception in town at Azu and we loved that too. Any wedding has some stress, but we were able to keep it to a minimum, and a lot of that was due to Kim and Kelly.
One more recommendation--if you are looking to do a trip up the California coast, I encourage staying here and also at the Red Barn Retreat in Little River (right next to Mendocino). These two retreats capture some of the best spots that California has to offer.
Thank you, Kim!
My boyfriend and I wanted a quick getaway and all the hotels were booked in Ojai which in retrospect was a total blessing because we found this house. We never wanted to leave this house, we want to get married on this property, we didn't even want to leave the house to get dinner... it's absolute perfection. It feels like you are in a vineyard in Tuscany or a house in the Mediterranean. The interior design is comforting and stylish. The grounds are stunning with views in every direction. I wish we had time to use the outdoor jacuzzi, next time! It's close to downtown Ojai but just far enough to make it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The shower is next level, it has a sauna feature and I took about three showers a day just to experience it. I have no idea how to cook but the kitchen was so epic that I had to do it justice, I even made fresh squeezed orange juice. The owner Kim is the most accommodating and gracious host ever. Can't say enough good things about it. Enjoy!
