Penne d’Agenais, meaning Crest, is an old settlement dating from Celtic times. Richard the Lionheart built the fortified Bastide town that we see today, in the 12th century. The Basilica that dominates the countryside for miles around was built in 1896 on the site of a centuries old chapel. The plateau de St Michel is a favoured place for intrepid hang glider pilots to launch themselves into space. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside with numerous market towns such as Villeneuve-sur-Lot, 20 minutes away, Montaigu-de-Quercy and Libos. There are chateaux vineyards on the way to Cahors, which can be visited to buy and taste wine. Bergerac is about an hour away, Agen 30 minutes.
There is a 18 hole golf course at Castilliones, three riding establishments, rowing on a lake or river, all within 30 minutes drive, or hang gliding if you bring your own kit, within seconds of the door.
