Guestbook comments from the owner
The Eyrie certainly is a unique property. We were absolutely delighted and privileged to stay there. The situation is magnificent with views from the conservatory and lounge that made the TV practically redundant. The bedrooms were spacious and airy. We were joined by family members for a few days during our 2 week stay and found the design of the Eyrie both inside and outside on the terraces offered a peaceful environment. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and we enjoyed preparing meals there. We also ate at the restaurants in the village which are a five minute walk away and we enjoyed excellent food with friendly service at all. The pool was the perfect temperature and because of this it was well used! Penne d'Agenais is a wonderful location for easy access to many attractions. We shopped in Port d'Agenais which was a five minute drive away. It is possible to walk but a very steep hike back up the hill. The weather in September was often cloudy in the morning when we went sightseeing and hot in the afternoon when we returned to the pool. Perfect. Sandra and John were very welcoming and informative and the house and gardens were spotlessly clean and comfortable. We would highly recommend this property.

GREAT PROPERTY, AMAZING VIEWS & TOTAL RELAXATION

Great property, amazing views & total relaxation

This was our third visit to The Eyrie and it felt like we were coming home! The improvements since our last visit in 2011 are fabulous. We were particularly fond of the hot tub using it even when the air temperature was too cool to sit out in - and also at night! This MUST be done! - Turn off the hot tub illumination, dim the house lights and revel in the myriad of stars, planets and satellites visible to the naked eye!
Other highlights were being able to use the new east terrace for lunch, the improved barbecue, lazing around the new decking and enjoying the peaceful, stunning views - oh, and a close-up encounter with a red squirrel!
Looking forward to a 4th visit sometime in the future - funds permitting!

PERFECT VACATION HOME

  • 5 of 5
We chose the Eyrie for its location within walking distance of the village and it's WiFi but in fact, once we arrived, we realized that it was the view and the magic ambience of the house and garden that was going to make our stay extra special. Sandra and John have put together a property that makes your vacation feel both luxurious and comfortable which is not always easy to achieve. Arriving in mid April, the weather was warm during the day but cooled off quickly in the evenings. Our favorite sitting spot was in the front sun room with its two very comfortable arm chairs next to a well placed dining table facing the incredible view of the village and valley below. Opening the sliding glass windows, you felt as if you were floating in the sky. We ate our dinner out here each night while watching the lights flicker on in the valley below. Can you hear me sigh as I write this sentence? The Eyrie is so high up that in the late afternoon, a few people were para gilding off the mountain from an area opposite the gated driveway to the house. Very friendly, well behaved group that was fun to watch.
We were too early in the season to take advantage of the pool and spa but they did look inviting. Coming from a long, cold New England winter we inhaled the wonderful scents of spring including the lilac that was in full bloom near the lower deck. Inside, we worked our way through the many books tucked into the numerous book shelves scattered around the house. Also, I have to admit we did watch TV enjoying the availability of British channels we don't receive in the US.
On a tourist note, it took us a couple of days to realize that everything closes between noon and 2PM. Also, the stores in Agen are closed Monday morning. We soon had a routine of a lazy morning leaving the house around 12:30 or 1 to find a place for lunch followed by afternoon sightseeing. Early birds would probably be able to sightsee in the morning but sadly, I am not an early bird! We are museum people so we really enjoyed the Art museum in Agen. Also the Bastide Museum in Monflanquin is small but interesting. English translations provided in both places.
All in all a great vacation. In fact we have already booked for next year returning with friends from Australia.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sandy and David for a glowing report. However for us hardy Brits the pool temperature at 28 C at the time was more than warm enough and we had been using the Spa throughout the winter, preferring the contrasts provided by water at 37C and the chill night air. One night we were thrilled to hear a great flock of migrating geese passing overhead a sure sign of an end to winter.

AMAZING!! FABULOUS HOUSE WITH SENSATIONAL VIEWS.

  • 5 of 5
WOW!!! There was nothing to fault with 'The Eyrie' - except perhaps that the photos on the web site don't do it justice.
Perched above the medieval village of Penne d'Agenais, this wonderful house has everything you need - extremely comfortable beds, high quality fixtures and fittings and the most sensational views.
The directions to the house were easy to follow, the owners were there to greet us and get us oriented and were only a phone call away if needed.
Try the spaghetti carbonara and the crepes at the Cafe des Arts.
A visit to Pujols is a must.
Also Agen is famous for its plums and prunes - a great selection of products is available at a large factory just out of town (can't remember the name, unfortunately - maybe les Voyageurs? - but well signposted). .
The market at Montaigu de Quercy is excellent. There are so many beautiful towns in the area - get out and visit them.
We cannot recommend 'The Eyrie' highly enough!! Did we mention the views?? And the house?? And the owners??

IDEAL LOCATION AND SUPERB HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
The house was outstanding. Magnificent views, a wide range of seating areas with great vistas. The pool was ideal and the. Table tennis and boules were very much enjoyed. The house had everything you needed, very comfortable sitting room, well appointed kitchen and very good sized bedrooms. Sandra and John were extremely welcoming and very helpful. A really relaxing place to enjoy the local area. I would highly recommend a stay at the Eyrie.

TOTAL PRIVACY, WITHIN 5 MIN WALK OF RESTAURANT

  • 5 of 5
"We were in search of privacy, without isolation, and we found it. A House with dominant views of the surrounding countryside where one is on nodding terms with kites and buzzards, and yet within walking distance of excellent restaurants. Fine days can be spent by the pool or on the extensive decked area, duller days can be spent in the comfort of the conservatory reading and just admiring the view. All of this within reach of good walks, drives and all that one expects of the ‘Bastide’ country of France"

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Eyrie and recommend it highly. We found it the perfect place to unwind and completely relax.

The house and gardens are beautifully maintained and well equipped; everything needed for a comfortable holiday is there. The It has been cleverly designed so there is always somewhere sunny or shady to sit or eat, depending on the weather and the time of day. We enjoyed in the conservatory with the doors wide open, and lunch and evening meals on the shady terrace overlooking the valley. We had intended to have an active holiday, but in fact just chilled out at the house for most of the time. We have 2 older teenagers who loved it too, and we spent much of our week in and around the pool, playing table tennis (our youngest says the table tennis room was "awesome") and boules - plenty to keep us occupied.

The village is outstandingly pretty and only 5 minutes walk away, but the house feels very private, and isn't overlooked by any other properties, and the views really are spectacular. We loved wandering back from the village in the evening and watching the sun set over the Lot valley from the viewpoint at the top of the drive.

A car is essential. The house is about an hour's easy drive from Bergerac.

The owners, Sandra and John, couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming.

We thoroughly recommend it and intend to return.

The photos on the website don't really do it justice.

Penne, meaning Crest, is an old settlement dating from Celtic times. Richard Coeur de Lion started to build the fortified Bastide town visible today in the 12th century. The Basilica that dominates the countryside for miles around was built on the site of an old chapel, the remains of which are still very evident. The opposite Crest, ' Le Plateau St Michel ' is a favoured place for hang gliding & bears the remains of an ancient moat , ' le tranchée des Anglais'. It is also the setting for the Eyrie. Penne is surrounded by beautiful countryside and very attractive market towns such as Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Monflanquin, Lauzerte, Montaigu-de-Quercy and Libos. There are chateaux nearby to sample wine. Bergerac is an hour away, Agen 30 minutes, Cahors 50 mins.

There is a golf course, three riding establishments, tennis, water sports and hang gliding all within 30 minutes drive. The area is a walkers paradise and ' le Chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle' passes in front of our main gate.

Other Activities: Wine tasting, fois gras museum, 'Haras' horse breeding center. 18 hole golf course at Castelnaud-de-Gratecambe
