Located on over 100 acres of privately owned property the Bunkhouse sits by itself among the pine and oak trees. Two bedrooms with queen beds and private bathrooms (one with a tub) are decorated with antiques and local art. A rather large and open, fully suited kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, gas stove and oven has extended access to the bar area and dining room table. Totally restored in 2008, this is a combined camping and luxury experience with privacy and Mother Nature at it's best.
Wanting to make our family move from Colorado to Southern California as smooth as possible, my father elected to settle in the mountains east of San Diego in the Gold Mine town of Julian. I had the privilege of growing up, going to school and working in this small, family orientated town. Following college I tipped my toe in the fountain of travel and never turned back. Keeping the world at my finger tips and my small town in my heart, I moved back up to Julian and have combined my talents with the love of nature and the mountains.
Ronda purchased this bungalow in 2007
The Bunkhouse is unique in the fact that it has a great calming effect on those that visit it. Once you drive up you see how secluded and peaceful the location is with the wind blowing through the pines, a faint melody of wind chimes and the flutter of the birds on their feeders, you will understand why this makes a great vacation for those needing a one-on-one with nature.
Without a doubt the front porch is one of our favorite spots. Facing North Peak (south), the easterly breeze keeps the temperatures down and viewing optimal. The living room - especially in the winter with the wood burning stove fired up - is very comfortable and has several large windows that bring in the morning sunlight and evening stars. If you are looking for secluded but still rustic, with a touch of class vacation, then the Bunkhouse is for you.
We had a truly wonderful time at the Bunkhouse and were glad you and Mike joined us our first evening. The Bunkhouse is the most comfortable and inviting place to stay. The turkeys and their routine, the deer eating the birdseed from the feeder and of course the hummers and all of the other birds. The reunion was great Seeing so many of my friends and remembering those great school years together. We will look forward to coming back and spening more time on the that wonderful porch. Gail
I have stayed at the Bunkhouse two years in a row now and can easily say it is my favorite place in Southern California. I plan on staying here every year for the rest of my life!!
What a great place to stay! Each year my husband and I do a weekend get away with our best friends. This year we decided to visit Julian. Julian is a quaint, quiet and serene little town and the Bunkhouse was no different. Rhonda was an amazing host who welcomed us into her cozy home. The porch seemed to be where we spent most of our time- bird, deer, bunny and wild turkey watching. When we did retire into the house we had more than enough room to lounge and play games. Comfy beds, the convenience of two bathrooms and full kitchen and bar were great additions. We all recommend the stay and look forward to visiting again.
Searching HomeAway high and low for a reasonably priced weekend escape, I wanted to find a place that was private, nicely decorated, and away from the crowds. The Bunkhouse delivered on all counts. Set on a roomy lot, it was so relaxing to sit on the porch and look up from my book from time to time to see who was ambling by. I couldn't believe the number of deer and wild turkeys! Woodpeckers flocked to the large trees in front of the cabin; nuthatches, chickadees, jays, hummingbirds, doves, all sorts of beautiful birds came and went all day long. Ronda has set out several feeders and various containers of water. The deer like the tubs, the birds like the stylish birdbath, and the hummingbirds go at each other all day trying to claim the hummingbird feeder as their territory. What a show!
The cabin is amply provisioned with cutlery, dishes, pots and pans, glassware, kitchen towels, anything you need. I brought all my own food and Ronda graciously supplied a platter of fresh fruit and some bread. She is a lovely hostess and personally came down to show me around. The decor of the cabin was charming. Lots of large picture books to enjoy, books on the Southwest, Julian, Pioneer Women, Life magazine covers, quite a myriad of subjects! A couple of things; no reason any of this would put you off….there is no phone, and my cell phone didn’t work. Didn’t really matter to me (and your cell will probably do just fine) it was probably just my carrier. No WiFi. The TV is small and you can only play VHS tapes, not DVD's. No worries, she has a lot of movies on tape, and I enjoyed watching Jagged Edge (oooo scary) and In the Line of Fire (a good thriller with Clint Eastwood). There is also no A/C in the cabin, but there are very good fans in each bedroom and the living room. However, one day was over 90 degrees and even with the fan on, it was a hot night!
The master bed and bathroom were lovely. Being a solo traveler, that is where I camped out. Probably the best provisioned bathroom I have ever seen. Towels galore, lots of closet space, good lighting, sundries for you in abundance. . There are parks nearby and walking trails (do be aware, the neighborhood is hilly), but I spent most of my time on the porch reading, breathing the sweet, clean air and enjoying the constant chatter of birds. A lovely escape and I hope to return.
It is rare at VRBO that, when staying at a property, you enjoy not only the place you're renting but you are also privileged enough to actually get a taste of an alternate lifestyle. At The Bunkhouse, you get that AND SO MUCH MORE. Most of the reviewers have mentioned the porch that is attached to the bunkhouse but we were not aware of its impact - its power - and that it would be SO CALMING, SO RESTFUL. Ronda has set up one of the most secluded little islands of tranquility that I have ever encountered ON THIS EARTH. There are two bird feeders there - one hanging, one on the porch - certain birds preferred one, other birds preferred the other, as well as a hummingbird feeder and three bird baths - one, a lovely pottery bath, the other, a larger trough that attracted wild turkeys and deer as well as other birds and a third - a clear pitcher - that several birds use for drinking. There was so much nature to see and be fascinated by that we were astounded and although it was in the upper 80s in Julian while we were there - the temperature on the porch was never above the mid-70s as there was a constant light and cooling breeze that kept us comfortable without a moments respite. The passing parade of animals unexpected - a mom and dad wild turkey with 7 chicken sized little turkeys in tow, deer - some with antlers, some not - a tiny, sweet little faun that we startled one morning taking out some trash, we didn't expect it and it didn't expect us so we were both pleasantly (perhaps not for the little deer) startled. MANY different species of birds were watched (Ronda provides some GREAT field glasses as well for the task) and several hummingbirds that may be the most fascinating creatures this planet has to offer. I cannot tell you enough how that porch worked on our souls - its three wind chimes create a rare atmosphere. It was therapeutic and rejuvenating and nothing short of balm for two weary city dwellers. Ronda has attended to EVERY detail in the Bunkhouse. And I mean every one. There is nothing that you might have forgotten that you will not find there. Kitchen is fully stocked with everything but food and we chose the fruit basket as our welcome gift and made great use of it. Beds were so comfortable, movies (on VHS, which I love) were varied and welcome - we watched ROMAN HOLIDAY and GONE WITH THE WIND - two fine choices! To say the place was idyllic is nothing short of understatement! GO! You'll love it. It is a very special place - not to be missed!
We were looking for a nice secluded place to get away from it all. This place certainly fits the bill. It's very secluded, quiet, and surrounded by oaks and pines. We spent a lot of time on the porch relaxing, listening to and watching a huge assortment of birds. We also enjoyed having meals on the porch. The property is very large and we enjoyed a few nice walks around the property where we saw turkeys and deer.
The bunkhouse itself is quite large for two people. It comes with everything necessary in the kitchen. The best part has to be the windows in the living area which face out to beautiful scenery. There's plenty of room to relax and enjoy the view. We used the cd player which had some interesting selections.
There is a tv and a ton of vhs tapes. If you're looking to spend time watching tv, just be aware that the it's a small tv (I'm guessing 12 inches). However, the whole point of getting away is leaving some of those "luxuries" behind. Having a small tv was by no means a big deal and it gave us time for other things.
Ronda was great. She was very flexible as far as arrival and departure times which gave us a few extra hours. We went up on a Friday and arrived around 1pm after having a walk and coffee in Julian. It's not far at all to Julian and there's a very nice restaurant in the opposite direction called Jeremy's.
My husband and I stayed in the bunkhouse last weekend for my birthday! The place was amazing. It was beautifully decorated and had everything that you need! The deer and turkey's that showed up on the property was so nice to view from the cozy front deck. We loved the wood burning stove and all the amenities.
Can't wait to come stay again. Thank you Ronda for the Dudleys bread and sweet rolls!
