About Elisabeth Glass

We live in Colorado but enjoy summers on Mt.Desert Island (MDI) where our sons grew up sailing at the local sailing center. We love MDI for Acadia National Park, its beauty, the ocean, wildlife, and a lifestyle of simple pleasures enjoying nature and relaxation.

We enjoy all that summer's offer from sailing, cycling, hiking, and just living simply in a wonderful community. It is a haven we love.

Elisabeth Glass purchased this house in 2003

Why Elisabeth Glass chose Southwest Harbor

Mt Desert Island (MDI) is unique among Maine destinations because of Acadia National Park. We love Southwest Harbor for its Maine small town-feel, good restaurants, MDI Community Sailing, and great community. Our home is on the 'quiet side' of MDI, but the cultural attractions of Bar Harbor are only 20 minutes away.

What makes this house unique

Meadowside Cottage offers us simple summer living where we can walk or cycle to the beach, to the Seawall, or to Southwest Harbor. Our home is on one acre with a meadow on one side and a wooded section beyond the grassy backyard. It is convenient to town, but has a rural feel, too. The Islander bus will stop at the house if you wave at the driver and it provides a free ride all over Mt Desert Island including Bar Harbor.

Pictures do Not do Justice to This Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at Meadowside Cottage this past week. We were in Southwest Harbor for a wedding. Over the weekend we were six adults and one grandchild with a smaller number staying on to enjoy Mr. Desert Island the rest of the time. This house was perfect for us at all times.

Looking at the vrbo pictures we were worried the house might be too small, but rented it based on one of the reviews that said the pictures do not do justice to the house. This is so true! The first floor is spacious and light filled. The living room is large with a

comfortable sofa and chairs. The dining room is large and the table is comfortable

and inviting. The sun room is large and lovely. The kitchen is generously equipped and

easy to work in. There is a very nice separate study with easy internet access and a

closet full of puzzles, games and videos. The bedrooms, up and down are well furnished.

And the back yard is large with a fire pit and a generous herb, vegetable and flower garden

that can be used by renters. Meadowside Cottage really is a large house that invites

one to rest and relax and feel at home.

And the location is convenient to so much. It is five minutes from downtown

Southwest Harbor, four minutes to the Seawall Picnic Area, and 5 minutes to the beautiful

Ship Harbor hike. Even though we toured Mt. Desert Island in the end we would have

been happy to stay in the immediate area a enjoy the hikes

We would like to recommend the Common Good Soup Kitchen that is next to the

Seawall Motel just a few minutes away. This is a lovely restaurant space with

good views of the seawall. A breakfast of oatmeal, coffee and delicious popovers

are served from 7:30 to 11:30 on a donation basis. The proceeds go to meals

for those in the community who may need food during the off season. It is a warm

cheerful experience.

The owners were very easy to work with. We had one small leak during a storm

and called the housekeeper who lives across the street. She called the handyman

who also lives nearby and he came over immediately. All were very pleasant and

This is a cared about and cared for home. We have rented from vrbo owners

across the country and can say this is one of the best experiences we have had.

Amazing home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at Meadowside two years in a row, and plan to do so for the foreseeable future! It is beautiful, far exceeding the photographs. The kitchen and living spaces downstairs are particularly nice, with lots of places to sit, read, do puzzles, and be together as a family. The bedrooms are comfortable, but its the shared spaces that really make it stand out. It comfortably sleeps, seats, and shelters 8 - without feeling like you're on top of each other.

The outdoors is lovely too, with plenty of flowers for picking and berries and herbs as well. There are tons of things to do nearby - it's on the Quiet Side of the island, but that's a benefit. And it only takes 30 minutes to get to Bar Harbor, should you want tourism. The owners are wonderful and we're grateful to them for sharing their home.

Great house for a group of friends wanting a peaceful retreat in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Last september I spent 4 days at the Meadowside "cottage" (it is definitely more house than cottage :)) with my husband and 5 friends. The house was the perfect size for two couples and three singles. It is a very comfortable nicely furnished house, clean and welcoming with plenty of space for everyone, and a huge dining table. We loved the house's proximity to the ocean. There were tons of beautiful places to hike in the area, and it wasn't far from the other side of the island either. The house had everything we needed including a lovely fire place, a beautiful garden stocked with fresh herbs, parking space for all our cars, and even books about the local area including hiking guides. Communication with the owner went smoothly and she provided all the information we needed to make the trip go well. We hope to come back again sometime! Thank you!

Beautiful home in perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Meadowside Cottage exceeded our expectations. Every item we could possibly need and want was available in the home. It was meticulously clean as well. The beds were incredibly comfortable - better than home. The kitchen had every item needed to make great meals. There was even a piano and guitar in the home. The location was perfect. We love the quieter side of the island and yet were close enough to Bar Harbor. Nearby Echo Lake was a delight for evening swims. I just can't say enough about this house. No detail was overlooked! The owner was a pleasure to work with as well. I hope to rent this home next year as well!

Great times at Meadowside Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed at this property for 4 nights in June we were not disappointed. The rooms are much bigger in person then on the web site there is plenty of space for a family. The living room is big as well is the dining room, kitchen was easy to work in and it was the best stocked kitchen that we have ever stayed at ( we have rented numerous times with Vrbo).Bedrooms are all good size. 2 fill bathrooms are wonderful esp with a family of 5.Plenty of towels and etc even the bathrooms are well stocked.Great yard and it is quiet neighborhood. Easy access to town and about 15 -20 min drive in to Bar Harbor. The home is very clean and tastefully decorated. I would highly recommend this property you will not be disappointed. The owners are very friendly and very easy to work with.Thank you so much Glass family for opening your home to us. We will always have fond memories of our wonderful time in Maine. Can't wait to go again.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Meadowside Cottage. My party included 2 children (8 and 10) and a grandmother in her eighties. The cottage met and exceeded all our diverse needs. When I look at photos online I wonder if they make it look better than it is. I was responsible for finding the place for all of us to stay. So I didn’t want to let my family and friends down. I walked in and couldn’t get over how great it was for us. It was much better than the pictures showed. We visited mid October and found the weather to be pleasant. The coastal influence moderated the temperatures. We brought lots of warm clothes that we didn’t need.

Let’s start with the bedrooms. There was a separate thermostat for the two upstairs bedrooms so we could keep it cool for sleeping for those of that wanted that. All bedrooms were cozy and nicely decorated. We had plenty of room for all our belongings. The kitchen was fantastic. We had everything we could possibly need. We ate all our meals there and it was fun and easy to cook in the kitchen. The large dining room table enabled us all to eat together in comfort. The living room was very comfortable. The yard had a fire pit which we used one evening-much to the kid’s delight. A bonus, we even got to harvest some lettuce for salads. The house was very quiet. We couldn’t hear the road or neighbors.

And we had access to so many things to do. We brought bikes and could ride right from the house. There were several places to hike close by. We saw a glorious sunset at the lighthouse. It was a short and pleasant drive to the main part of Acadia National Park. We liked being on the “quiet side”. The only problem was the stay was too short. We can’t wait to go back. And we want to stay here again.

The owner was very easy to work with. We are thankful they shared their warm and cozy home with us. It was a perfect vacation-one that I and the others will remember for a long time.
