Photos and Description of the Chilmark vacation cottage rental

William Katzenback designed this house for our family of seven and we have spent many wonderful summers here. The house is simple and comfortable, and the surroundings and view give a sense of serenity and privacy. There is an uninterrupted view across a large lawn and field and meadow toward south beach. It is built on pilings, three separate but connected units on encircling decks:a two story unit with 4 beds on upper level, downstairs one bedroom with twin beds the other with double bed, bathroom with shower. Main section kitchen has a dishwasher, washer, dryer, refrigerator and stove separated by a long counter from living room with cathedral ceiling, fireplace and window seats with views to pond and beach.Small unit has queen size bed and bathroom with tub and shower. Also, an outside shower. You can walk, sail or paddle to private beach (Hancock Beach) or swim in the pond There are 2 kayaks,two sailboats, Sun Fish and Aqua Fin, canoe and an aging rowboat.
About Matt Freedman

We live in Chicago where we raised our children. Dr. Freedman was a research professor in the medical school, and his wife taught at the Laboratory School. Our five children now live on both coasts, but we gather at Point Meadow whenever we can, and now it is a beloved place for our grandchildren, who come here from California, Washington, Washington, DC and New York. Three of them chose this place to be married, because it so special and beautiful.

Why Matt Freedman chose Chilmark

We bought this land from a Vineyard sheep farmer, and lived in tents the first year we owned it. We wanted a house that fit into the beautiful landscape. It was built by an Island builder from the design by William Katzenbach whose other Vineyard houses we admired. Our four boys used the upstairs 'dorm' and our daughter had the room below. Parents slept in the 'little house.' The design allowed people to gather in the main room or have private time in the rest of the house. The children learned to sail to the beach, surf, swim in the pond, fish and play ball in the huge mowed area of the yard.We all love the magnificent view and the unspoiled beach.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is simple and comfortable. We wanted to have a great view so the house is on pilings, with decks connecting the three structures. It has been a great place to celebrate birthdays and weddings, to entertain friends and sink into the peace of the Vineyard.

Notes: The large yard is great for ball playing. Serious walkers can walk to the beach from our house down Blue Bark Lane--about 1 1/2 miles. We take morning dips in the pond by walking down our path by wild roses, viburnum and blue berries. In season there are blue crabs to catch (license) in the pond. There are nets and beach chairs and umbrellas for guest's use. Also, lots of Vineyard books and assorted games.
