Many generations have passed since the first O'Neal was shipwrecked on Hatteras Island. The O'Neals once owned a large strip of land, in Rodanthe, that went from ocean to sound. Over time the land was divided up and passed down from one generation to another. With each generation the lots were getting smaller, and some were sold outside of the family. Our goal was to try and save as much family land as we could. We bought the Sea Sound Motel, a small 11 room, family run motel in 1997. It is located on Sea Sound Road. It was part of the original O'Neal property. The opportunity to buy the lot that the Castle sits on came up and we were excited.

How we got the name, Castle by the Sea. We briefly owned a hotel in the mountains of North Carolina called the Castle Hotel. The buildings were actually built like castles. When we sold it, much to our surprise, the new owners tore it down. One day we were talking about the Castle Hotel and remembering the fun times there with our grandsons. When we said we were sad we sold it one of our grandsons spoke up and said build a castle in Rodanthe. After looking at many house plans, we decided the victorian house was the most similar house to a castle. The name came easy. CASTLE BY THE SEA

Awesome House, Awesome Owners!

  • 5 of 5
We had a house full of adults and kiddos. Plenty of room for all our food, toys and us! The house was clean and gorgeous! Loved that the house provided linens and towels, plus laundry and dishwasher detergent. Another plus, was the house had plenty of spices available! It was very nice to not have to purchase all the spices to cook dinner.

The walk to the beach isn't bad at all. You can even drive up to the beach and drop off your beach gear and pick up your gear to not have to lug it all.

We had a storm towards the end of our stay which knocked out our power at 11pm. Hatteras Island had power crews there within hours and power was back on at 5am! Our AC upstairs wasn't working and the TV in the living room fried due to the storm. The owners had the AC fixed and a new tv before dinner time! Absolutely amazing!

Fit for a King!

Walking into the Castle by the Sea was like walking right into the pictures. The house & location were exactly as described. The house was clean & well stocked. The southern hospitality was warm & welcoming. Owner very helpful & accommodating. I would recommend this property to anyone who loves the ocean, hates crowds and enjoys a short walk to the beach. While at the castle stop by Lisa's Pizza for a pie. You won't be sorry. Relaxing family vacation. Enchanted with the Castle by the Sea.

WE HAD A GREAT VACATION!!!!

  • 4 of 5
We had a great time at this house. The space, the rooms everything is beautiful. The kids had a great time at the beach which was close enough to walk to. The pool was convenient and the hot tub was beautiful.
The only issues we had was that the grill needs to be updated. We brought food to be grilled and the grill was very difficult to cook on. It did not get hot enough and took a long time for steak to cook. The only other suggestions I have for the homeowner is to upgrade the outside furniture with some type of lounge chairs and maybe a swing or hammock.

Other than the few things above, this house had everything we needed to enjoy our vacation.

Thank you for a great week!

A great week!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful week in this home! It is a very short walk to a beautiful beach (our kids, aged 6-11, were able to walk it easily, carrying boogie boards, buckets, towels etc.) and the outdoor shower (with warm water) makes life so easy when you get back!
The house is fully equipped with everything you could need & is clean & so spacious with amazing views! You can see, hear and smell the ocean on either of the 2 beautiful decks! The owners were so friendly too, even stopping by with a pound of freshly ground coffee after we asked where to find the best coffee in town :-)
Rodanthe was so nice and quiet and relaxing, but still had everything we needed (watersport rentals, access to beach and sound, ice-cream and convenience stores). We could even board our dogs just a mile from the house! There is a small, sparkling clean pool that is shared with the motel next door and our kids enjoyed a dip there too!!
We highly recommend this beautiful home for a true beach vacation!!

The village of Rodanthe, with it's beautiful beaches and 'laid back' atmosphere, is centrally located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. If you just want to relax, read a book and enjoy uncrowded beaches, Rodanthe is the place to be. There is great fishing by boat, from the surf or at the pier located 1/2 mile from Castle by the Sea. Rodanthe Watersports offers bike rentals, kayaks and jet ski's for rent. Rodanthe is a kiteboarding and windsurfing paradise. If you aren't experienced and want to learn the watersports, lessons are available in the area. We do have a variety of restaurants and shops in Rodanthe.

25 miles south, in Buxton, sits the tallest lighthouse in North America. Cape Hatteras lighthouse is open to climbing if you are up to the challenge. The view is well worth the trip to the top.

Another 15 minutes further south you will arrive at the free ferry to Ocracoke Island. It is the home of the oldest lighthouse still in operation. Visit the quaint village of Ocracoke and learn the history of pirates including the famous Black Beard himself.

There are many shops, restaurants, and other things to do along the way.

Traveling north from Rodanthe you will cross the bridge at Oregon Inlet with beautiful views of the ocean and sound. If looking for an off shore charter Oregon Inlet is the place to stop. You can stop by in the afternoon and watch the charter boats unload the catches of the day. If looking for a soundside charter we can refer you to someone locally.

Five minutes further, north, is the Bodie Island Lighthouse with its rich history.

When you get to the stoplight straight ahead is Nags Head or left on 64 takes you to Manteo.

In Manteo you can see the longest running outdoor drama, The Lost Colony. Manteo is the homeport of the Elizabeth II which is a full size replica of the first English ship to visit the new world. Don't forget to visit the Aquarium. Its full of information and fun for kids. Elizabethian Gardens is located beside the lost colony and well worth a visit for its beauty and splendor. Take a walk through the streets of Manteo and visit the waterfront and many shops and restaurants.

On your way into Nags Head you can stop by Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the East Coast and watch the hang gliders or if your brave enough take a lesson and join in.

Further north into Kill Devil Hills is the Wright Brothers Memorial. A tribute to America's first heavier than air flight. It has a large and very interesting museum. Along the way you will see putt putt courses, golf courses and a movie theatre.
