About Rebecca Whitson

We are a couple of nerdy engineers originally from Texas and New Mexico. Our free time is spent crashing our mountain bikes, walking our dog in the forest, and playing with our young daughter.

We love that Bluebird Day Vacation Rentals is a locally owned and operated property management company, and we appreciate that they have a philosophy about celebrating and preserving Bend culture that is right in alignment with our own. They take amazing care of our home, and will provide you with great service!

Rebecca Whitson purchased this house in 2011

Why Rebecca Whitson chose Bend

The ease of access to the outdoors really appealed to us. We moved here in 2007 and have loved every minute of our time here. The small town qualities of Bend lend itself as a perfect place to raise our daughter.

What makes this house unique

This house is situated in an amazing location. The Deschutes River is just steps away. Downtown, the Old Mill, numerous breweries, Les Schwab Amphitheater, bike trails, parks and more are all right out the door! Our favorite thing about living in Bend is that you can walk or ride a bike anywhere. This home is the perfect launch pad to get to experience this wonderful Bend lifestyle!

Guestbook comments from the owner

“What a perfect spot this is! The house is so cute and comfy, close to town and all the wonderful events that went on while I was here! Great food surrounds this spot. A little sightseeing that I did which were all fun and interesting. Thanks so much. I got a real feel of living in Bend! I’ll be back!”

Perfect house for a couple

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I visited Ben in October and the house was perfect for the both of us.

Location is great within walking distance from ten barrels and crux and boneyard breweries.

I would recommend this place to any couple looking to visit Bend.

Did not meet expectations

  • 3 of 5

I've done a lot of VRBO rentals and this is the first time that I was disappointed upon arrival. We got off to a bad start when we drove up to find that the River Otter is not a stand alone house as portrayed, but is attached to a second unit within the same house. Part of renting a house rather than a hotel is the privacy you get and the expectation that you do not hear voices and living noise through the walls (which you do here). we had booked this property for my fiances parents for the first part of our stay having been told that the second property was 'right next door', yes, literally. The internet and cable was not working when we arrived so we had to have access to their place with the shared cable box and wi-fi router in order to get both fixed- this would have been really awkward if it was not family staying next door. The bikes and garbage are also shared between properties. We felt misled about this set-up and feel it should be made more explicit.

The actual home is nice on the surface inside, as mentioned very clean and well decorated. The location is good. But it suffers from basic inconveniences that make staying there uncomfortable.

Two items have been mentioned in other reviews and were not remedied by our stay. The bath tub/shower is an insane situation, we are both active and practice yoga, but found stepping in and out of the tub nerve wracking, there was no stool that was supposed to be there. But even then it is an accident waiting to happen. Secondly, the blinds are completely transparent, you can see straight from the street into the bedroom with no way to block it.

Other items that could help livability-

* a coat rack in the front, there was no where to put snow covered jackets

* somewhere in the shower to put shampoo/soap etc. the closest place where they had things required a long and dangerous reach far outside the shower into the bathroom. I had my items on the tub floor.

* the bed is a back breaker, the mattress is very soft and uneven and could use a pad or egg crates or something, my fiance did not sleep at all and his back was in rough shape.

* the shower water pressure is not good

Overall this place is portrayed better than it is and I would definitely not stay here again. Bend is such an awesome place and this property did not meet our enjoyment of the rest of the trip.

River Otter

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time staying at The River Otter! The house is cute and comfortable. The river is a very short distance away. Our dogs loved the small back yard and the off leash dog parks in the area!

Rebecca turned the light on for us...and was responsive

to our needs (when I forgot the directions at home).

Thank you. Kathryn, Mike, Koda & Melvin

Nice Bungalow in a Great Location to Enjoy Bend

  • 4 of 5

This cute bungalow is exactly as pictured. Very clean and modern and it is a great location. We regularly enjoyed our half block walk to the Deschutes River and half mile walk into downtown to visit the breweries. The owners have provided great information to help you find stores, restaurants, breweries, and etc. There are two items that kept me from giving 5 stars. The blinds on the windows are all see through, so if you like privacy this will leave you a bit uncomfortable. The claw foot bathtub is placed on an elevated surface and we found it to be a bit tricky to get in and out of safely. (We are physically active people in our early 40's) I would not recommend this for elderly people or anyone lacking in agility. Otherwise this is truly a gem of a place.

Perfect...

  • 5 of 5

Ideal location for downtown, the river, and the Mill District. I used this spot as base-camp for all along with mountain biking in and around Bend. Super clean, affordable, full kitchen along with washer dryer allowed me to travel healthy and light... An ideal spot and quiet in the evening. Walking distance to all > 10 Barrel Brewery, downtown, bike shops (Pine Mountain / Hutch's / others...) > You get the point...

Property desciption is accurate, VERY CLEAN, and would recommend to anyone visiting...

A location that can't be beat! Right on Miller's Landing, a riparian strip of river front with trails that meander to the Old Mill District. Just a short walk to Drake Park and Downtown Bend through the historic district. You can walk to the Old Mill shopping district, Les Schwab Amphitheater, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, the Bend Ale Trail, and all of the wonderful shops and restaurants on Galveston Avenue. The Deschutes River is just a few steps away with put-in access for your tubes and canoes. A charming foot bridge just across the street takes you over the river and to 'Pirate Playground' a wonderland for kids.
