Newport House Rental Photos and Description
What could be better than this classically furnished contemporary-style lake house situated in a quiet, rural corner of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, right up against the western shore of Lake Memphremagog?
If you're gathering with family and friends, or if you're an outdoor sporting type—or even if you just want to get away from it all to sleep in, read, and gaze upon the stunning lake and occasional red fox, ducks, deer and moose—The Birches is a great vacation property.
The main floor is ideal for gatherings and entertaining, with ample entrance hall, cathedral ceilings and skylights, fully equipped kitchen and Great Room replete fireplace and massive lake-facing deck (barbecue included, of course).
The stunning Lower Great Room is outfitted with a granite wet bar and large satellite-operated TV. It has sliding glass doors that open right out to another massive deck (this one covered, for shade) and onto the beautifully landscaped lawn and gardens, the lake itself—and, farther down by the lake, The Birches Vintage Lake Cottage. (This 2-bedroom all-season 1930s cottage, great for family reunions or events like small weddings, is currently booked through March 2013.)
Swim on the private beach, sun yourself on the floating docks, bring your own boat and moor it right here. (For big boat launching or rentals of serious craft or plain ol' canoes, the Newport Marina is just down the road .) Trophy fishing abounds here too, so bring your rods.
As for the land, The Birches has a beautiful 1-acre lawn and landscaping perfect for hanging out. But there's also incredible rambling and biking (and, in winter, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and VAST snowmobiling) right out the front door. The roadways and views, with their mix for farmsteads and vast wilderness, are truly spectacular. As for serious hiking, we especially love the Lake Willoughby area, which is 20 minutes away by car. There's golf at Newport Country Club, or drive 20 minutes to Jay Peak's resort, the Orleans Country Club, or the Barton Country Club.
Head north 30 minutes into Quebec's gorgeous Eastern Townships, where you'll find Mounts Sutton, Orford, Bromont and the lovely town of Magog. Head west another hour and you'll hit the stunning city of Montreal. (Don't forget to bring your passport!). In wintertime, alpine skiing at Jay Peak is a mere 20 minutes away and Owl's Head, Stowe, and Burke are in the vicinity.
There are shops, antiquing, farmer's markets, and great restaurants nearby for all-season enjoyment.
Upstairs, the house has two good-sized, clean, modern bathrooms and three comfortably furnished bedrooms. The master suite has it's own private lake-facing balcony (perfect for sunrise yoga and morning coffee), bathroom, walk-in closet, and immense flat-screen TV (with basic satellite cable and DVD player). The coziest room of the bunch features a queen-sized bed and charming lake-peek windows. Lastly, there's a lovely bright room with views of the trees that boasts two twin beds.
The house currently sleeps 6 in great comfort, another person can sleep on the couch in the Great Room (it makes truly wonderful bed) and there are two Aerobeds which can go anywhere (ideally in the Lower Great Room). All linens—fresh bedding and towels—are included.
A laundry room, powder room and a mud room are also located on the main floor. A granite spa with jacuzzi and a wet sauna are also available for monthly rentals only. The garage is off-limits in summertime.
Fees: Additional fees of $30 per person applies for guests above 6. There is a one-time cleaning fee of $65. All booking less than one month in duration are subject to 9% Vermont Lodging Tax.
Important note on internet access: Due to the remoteness of The Birches, the wifi—which is the best available—can be quite slow and frustrating. So you if you are dependent on it for speedy transactions or work, please bring a G3- or G4-operated device. There's plenty of good, fast, free wifi a few miles away inside the various cafes on Main Street and on the street itself.
Transport: Newport Center is located off the I-91. The best way to get here is to drive. If you are located at a considerable distance, or want the best use of your vacation days, it makes sense to fly into Burlington or Montreal and rent a car.

Why Dee Dee Amro chose Newport
I fell in love with the natural beauty of this landscape, and the remoteness. I love waking up to the sunrise above the water, where all I see is the massive lake, mountains, trees and sky. The Birches is a great place to relax and gather with friends and family, but there is so much outdoor activities, it is also a sportsman's paradise.
