About Else Reed
How does a girl from Amsterdam end up in Canandaigua? Serendipity struck in the Finger Lakes when I paired up with my future husband on a chairlift at a ski resort. I was visiting from Holland and he grew up on the south end of Canandaigua Lake. Although we came from different countries, we realized that we shared common interests like skiing, camping, hiking, and windsurfing. Canandaigua Lake naturally drew us together. After we married and began living in Canandaigua, I taught windsurfing at the City Pier. I saw that the northeast lakeshore has the most sun and best winds. When this cottage came on the market there in 2012, we'd stop by often to look at it because it's so close to Canandaigua. We could see why this convenient location has the highest demand on the lake – and why listings here get snapped up so quickly. In fact, our sellers received competing bids. We're grateful they accepted our offer. Staying at this cottage lets our 3 children experience what we remember from our youth: Summer days filled with fresh air and freedom on the lake. They love to swim, kayak, and windsurf in the tranquil cove out front. Our oldest son always loved watching the July 4th fireworks over the lake. Now he helps shoot those fireworks from the city barge anchored right in front of the cottage – his dream Summer job! You'll treasure the family memories that you make here. Imagine waking up, looking out from bed, and spying mink or herons fishing on the dock. Envision sipping coffee on the sunporch as a hot air balloon floats across the lake, skims its calm surface, then rises straight above you. Picture dining outdoors on the lakeside deck at sunset as an American bald eagle snatches a meal from the water. As a guest wrote: “The location of the home is perfect and the views of the lake are just breath-taking.”

Why Else Reed chose Canandaigua
Families keep coming back because of the scenic beauty, rich history, and relaxed mood which define Canandaigua, an Iroquois word for the “Chosen Place”. In 1922, a group of Canandaiguans sought to bring golf to their city, as near as possible to their homes and and downtown businesses. Their chosen place: a sheep farm on the northeast shore of Canandaigua Lake, just over the city line. This huge pasture was interspersed with large trees and offered full-day sun, perfect sunsets, and beautiful lake views. Our cottage stands on the foundation of an ice house the farmers used to keep ice they harvested from Canandaigua Lake each winter. The new investors financed the Canandaigua Country Club and golf course by subdividing and selling 40 lakeside lots for just $600 each. Today, this family-friendly neighborhood has the highest demand on Canandaigua Lake – and when you're here, you'll understand why. As our young and active 87-year-old neighbor says, “It's like a vacation everyday.” Why? From the moment the Sun rises through the majestic trees of the 9th Fairway beyond your kitchen window, until it slowly sets off the lakeside deck, you'll enjoy 15 hours of sunshine – the most anywhere on the lake. The ever-changing quality of light playing upon the big sky, blue water, and verdant hills mesmerizes you. You'll enjoy this secluded location – it's off the beaten path yet nearby everything, from amusements and concerts to restaurants and wine tastings. Walk, bike, and even kayak to Wegmans for groceries – it's that close! You'll love how this authentic cottage's hand-made details convey a rare and nostalgic sense of time and place. Old-growth pine floors, vintage French windows, and a rustic stone fireplace recall a simpler time when families seeking a convenient Summer retreat first made Canandaigua Lake their “Chosen Place”. In a hectic life, this cottage makes the ideal place to relax and reconnect with family, friends, and nature. In a word: Simplicity!
What makes this cottage unique
SUNSHINE – Because this cottage has Canandaigua Lake in front and a 70-acre golf course in back, it has the most sunshine on the lake – up to 4 hours more sunlight on the East side - plus sunsets!
TRANQUIL COVE – The lake depth starts here at 3 feet and gradually deepens much further offshore. This allows runabouts or pontoon boats to navigate out to the lake and effectively creates a no-wake zone within our big cove. It's perfect for you to swim, kayak, Stand Up Paddleboard, or windsurf near the cottage without feeling harassed by speedboats. You'll love the intimacy of this beautiful place.
FRONT-ROW VIEW OF CITY FIREWORKS – During July 4th and the August Riesling Festival, enjoy public fireworks launched over Canandaigua Lake. A private front row seat to fireworks? Yes!
THERE'S NO ROAD TO CROSS – The LOCATION map shows a paved, private cul-de-sac ½ mile along the Fairway providing easy access to the cottage, with no thru traffic. With a 20-mph speed limit, you can walk, jog, or bike here in safety. Best of all, you don't have to cross a road to get to the lake! WALKABILITY – Walk or bike throughout this family-friendly neighborhood. Canandaigua has miles of level sidewalks and safe bike paths. Everything you need is just around the corner from this cottage.
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL – You'll get to know Canandaigua in the shortest amount of time because you're off the beaten trail yet nearby everything. Our resort area in the heart of the Finger Lakes has so much to offer – especially in Summer. At this convenient location, you'll drive less and relax more.
