We met on a chairlift at a nearby ski resort – how else could a local man end up marrying a Dutch woman from Amsterdam? Canandaigua Lake drew us together. This cottage lets our three children experience what we remember from our youth: Summer days filled with fresh air and freedom on the lake. They love to swim, kayak, and windsurf in the tranquil cove out front. Our oldest son always loved watching the July 4th fireworks over the lake. Now he helps shoot those fireworks from the city barge anchored right in front of the cottage – his dream Summer job! You'll treasure the family memories you make here. Imagine waking up, looking out from bed, and spying mink or herons fishing on the dock. Envision sipping coffee on the sunporch as a hot air balloon floats across the lake, skims its calm surface, then rises straight above you. Picture dining outdoors on the lakeside deck at sunset as an American bald eagle snatches a fish from the water. As a guest wrote: “The location of the home is perfect and the views of the lake are just breath-taking.” We think you'll agree.
Else Reed purchased this cottage in 2012
Scenic beauty, rich history, and a relaxed mood define Canandaigua – an Iroquois word meaning the “Chosen Place”. Our cottage rests on the northeast lakeshore, where in 1922, a group of local investors purchased an old sheep farm and built our area's first golf course – the Canandaigua Country Club. To offset costs, they sold 40 lakeside lots for just $600 each. Today, these properties have the highest demand on Canandaigua Lake. When you're here, you'll understand why. As our 87-year old neighbor says, “It's like a vacation everyday.” From the moment the Sun rises through the majestic trees of the 9th Fairway beyond your kitchen window, until it slowly sets off the lakeside deck, you'll enjoy 15 hours of sunshine – the most anywhere on the lake. Because our neighborhood connects to the city, you can walk or bike everywhere. There's nothing like this combination of sunny lakefront, golf side seclusion and walkable convenience anywhere else on the lake. Inside, you'll love how this authentic cottage's hand-made details convey a rare and nostalgic sense of time and place. Old-growth pine floors, vintage French windows, and a rustic stone fireplace recall a simpler time when families seeking a convenient Summer retreat first made Canandaigua Lake their “Chosen Place”. In a hectic life, this cottage makes the ideal place to relax and reconnect with family, friends, and nature. In a word: Simplicity!
SUNSHINE – Because this cottage has Canandaigua Lake in front and a 70-acre golf course in back, it has the most sunshine anywhere on the lake – up to 4 hours more sunlight on the East side - plus sunsets!
TRANQUIL COVE – The lake depth starts here at 3 feet and gradually deepens much further offshore. This allows runabouts or pontoon boats to safely navigate out to the lake and effectively creates a no-wake zone within our big cove. It's perfect for you and your family to swim, kayak, Stand Up Paddleboard, or windsurf near the cottage without feeling harassed by speedboats. You'll love the intimacy of this beautiful place.
FRONT-ROW VIEW OF CITY FIREWORKS – During July 4th and the August Riesling Festival, enjoy public fireworks launched straight out front over Canandaigua Lake. A private front row seat to fireworks? Yes!
THERE'S NO ROAD TO CROSS – The LOCATION map shows a paved, private cul-de-sac ½ mile along the beautiful golf course providing easy access to the cottage, with no thru traffic. With a 20-mph speed limit, you can walk, jog, or bike here in safety. Best of all, you don't have to cross a road to get to the lake! WALKABILITY – Walk or bike throughout this family-friendly neighborhood. Canandaigua has miles of level sidewalks and safe bike paths. You'll find everything you need is just around the corner from this cottage.
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL – You'll get to know Canandaigua in the shortest amount of time because you're off the beaten trail yet nearby everything. Our resort area in the heart of the Finger Lakes has so much to offer – especially in Summer. At this convenient location, you'll drive less and relax more.
Our host welcomed us on our arrival and explained the ins/outs of the house and the area. They reached out to us several times during the week to see if we needed anything, it was very reassuring. The location of the home is perfect and the views of the lake are just breath-taking. The house was beautifully decorated and the kitchen was stocked with every pot or pan you could imagine needing. It is difficult to plan a vacation with teenagers/young adult children and make every one happy. The house had plenty of room for 7 adults to spread out and relax. The kids kept busy with kayaking, fishing and hiking. Everywhere you might want to go was within walking distance. This place is a real gem and we can't wait to plan another family vacation at Canandaigua Lake.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The kitchen was so well stocked, anything we needed was available. Everything was so clean, and in such great condition, we loved the large deck with enough chairs for
all 6 of us. The owner was always available for any questions or concerns
The 2 kayaks were enjoyed by all. The sunsets were amazing.
The cottage was in a very convenient location, close to Wegmans, I would definitely recommend this property.
We spent the week at this beautiful cottage. It had everything we needed as our married daughters and our small grandchildren relaxed and enjoyed time together as a family. We explored the lake in the provided single and double kayaks and our grandson enjoyed fishing and jumping off the dock into the water. Our clambake was delicious and the Webber grill and deck added to the fun. The fenced in yard was the perfect size for our grandchildren to play. Everyone enjoyed their own rooms and the air conditioning felt like heaven on the hot summer nights. The cottage was in perfect condition upon arrival and the kitchen and electronics provided were all that we needed. The convenient location allowed us to walk to the city pier, Kershaw Park and Main Street. The beautiful grounds did not allow for a lack of things to do. The owner was prompt in responding to questions and made sure our family was comfortable and the cottage and it's amenities fulfilled our needs. We are looking forward to coming back again soon.
Our stay at your home was superb! It was our best vacation rental on Canandaigua Lake thus far, as we have been renting various homes there for the past 5 summers.
The home is absolutely lovely and filled with all the comforts of home: extremely comfortable beds, central A/C, immense supply of outdoor seating, comfortable couches, privacy from neighbors, dishwasher, washer/dryer. What impressed us the most was how impeccably clean the home is and how the kitchen had an immense supply of all the necessities imaginable. The use of your kayaks was so appreciated! The beds were heavenly - we can't remember sleeping so well! We got to enjoy your fire pit a couple of evenings and had fun roasting marshmallows. The central air gave a nice reprieve from the humidity. Docking our boat at your dock was much appreciated. The view of the lake was perfect and we really liked that the water at the end of the dock was shallow enough for young kids to swim, but deep enough for the boat. The close proximity to the local restuarants, ice-cream, CMAC and downtown was perfect. And our children had a great time playing with all the neighborhood kids there.
We enjoyed ourselves immensely! You can bet that we will be back again next year!
My husband recently stayed at your lovely house on Canandaigua Lake. We loved it. The house is beautiful, very warm, peaceful, quiet, relaxing and charming. The kitchen was nicely appointed. We wish we could have stayed longer. The view and access to the lake was perfect and I loved how close we were to the local markets and downtown. I told my brother and sister about this vacation home and we are going to plan our sibling reunion there soon. We will be back next year!
