PRIVATE BEACHFRONT HOME ON LAKE MICHIGAN NEAR GLEN ARBOR

Glen Arbor Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Private Home 3 Bedroom/2 Bathrooms Sleeps 6

Surf Song on Sleeping Bear Bay - Just north of Glen Arbor, and nestled under towering pines and oaks with miles of soft sandy beach on its doorstep sits this peaceful waterfront haven. Set back from the water for privacy, and with a slight elevation, it offers dramatic views and memorable sunsets over Sleeping Bear Bay and the Manitou Passage. As its name suggests, many a day has been spent relaxing on the deck or playing on the beach with the ever-present sound of the waves refreshing the spirit.

This comfortable cottage has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths, with a fully furnished kitchen, family rooms on each level with flat screen TVs and comfy seating. A maximum of 6 people are allowed to stay in the home at one time. With the rental of the cottage comes the use of a canoe and 3 bikes.

You enter the cottage on the upper level which houses the kitchen, dining room, and living room with split stone fireplace on the north side and master bedroom and bath on the south. The master bedroom with queen bed has French doors opening onto the deck.

The walk-out lower level has another large family room, with fold-out sofa bed, large flatscreen tv and a woodstove, along with two bedrooms – one with a queen bed and another with two twins. There is also a full bathroom and laundry area.

The large deck off of the upper level offers a variety of comfortable seating, an outdoor dining table and charcoal grill. From the deck you have fantastic views of the beach and the Manitou Passage beyond.

Heading down towards the beach, you pass the hammock strung up in the shade of the pines, and a fire pit area that’s tucked into the dune. From there it’s just a few sandy steps down the path to the beach and the clean, clear waters of Lake Michigan.

The cottage is just one of about a dozen on this quiet, private road, and is surrounded by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore land with miles of pristine beach and scenic hiking trails.

Surf Song has been owned by our family for the past 35 years, and is being made available to select guests in 2014. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or to reserve a week for your family this summer. And be sure to check out the link below for our complete Photo Tour!

Our mom (pictured here with her granddaughter and our dad) designed this cozy home and now 4 generations of family have treasured this beautiful spot! While each season has its unique beauty, we currently make it available for rental to select guests during the summer and fall.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1978

The red pines and towering oaks make this wooded setting with spectacular lake views a prime beachfront property. Being on a private road, it is secluded and quiet. It has 100 feet of private Lake Michigan beach while surrounded by the beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

While close to Glen Arbor, this generously furnished private home is away from the crowds and traffic. It is not your typical rental unit - it is a well-loved family home. The soft sandy beach and gentle slope into the lake make it ideal for family swimming. While some rental homes in the area are quite large, this one is very comfortable for about 6 people. Enjoy meals on the deck with the 'million dollar view' overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan!

THE PERFECT COTTAGE!

  • 5 of 5
We love Surf Song! We've vacationed in Michigan for several years now, and this is one the best places we've stayed--super clean and well-equipped, with lots of extras like bicycles, hammock, and a canoe. There were even ingredients to make chocolate chip cookies! The location is perfect--a short drive to charming Glen Arbor, but away from the hustle of and bustle of summer vacationers, nestled in the trees with an stunning view of beautiful Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. The fire pit is awesome, safely constructed with several nice chairs to lounge in. The beachfront is sandy and beautiful, and I noticed hardly any beach traffic at all while we were there. It's close to hiking trails, dune climbing, the lovely towns of Glen Arbor and Leland, berry picking, beautiful countryside dotted with historic farms and organic produce stands.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this review. It was a pleasure to have you and your family as our guests. Knowing you are seasoned travelers who have stayed in several places in Michigan, we are pleased you think Surf Song is "one of the best places" you've stayed! As you mentioned, being away from the "hustle and bustle" of Glen Arbor, but still close town, is one of the many benefits of our particular location. Thank you for coming to us all the way from Iowa! We are delighted you want to come to Surf Song again and look forward to welcoming you back. Glenn and Kim

SURF SONG 2013

  • 5 of 5
We spent a wonderful, August week at Surf Song. The weather was sunny and clear, with temperatures in the 70’s. There were numerous activities and sights to explore, but we always came back to dine on the deck and catch the sunset over the lake. We went to the Dune Climb, climbed Pyramid Point and enjoyed traversing the Scenic Drive. Down the road at the Leelenau School , the Lanphier Observatory is a “must see”. Visitors are invited on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The night we went presented us with a star- filled sky. One half day was spent enjoying the scenery through wine country and sampling the local wines. We biked the area and were lucky enough to take part in the celebration of rural culture en route.
The cabin was cozy and clean, well supplied and comfortable for our family. We used the canoe numerous times and had fires in the pit. It was great to have the beach right out the door. Be forewarned however-there is one bad thing about Surf Song-leaving is extremely difficult!

Owner's Response: So glad you took advantage of the Lanphier Observatory - a 13-inch (330 mm) Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector telescope- nearby at the Leelanau School. It is one of the unique attractions here! Being away from city lights, the stars appear especially bright. To better appreciate and learn more about the beauty of the night skies, adds an interesting element to a visit here. It was a pleasure meeting your whole family! I understand about "it being hard to leave", and hope to welcome you all back soon. Glenn and Kim

BEAUTIFUL SPOT ON LAKE MICHIGAN

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this wonderful cottage on a rare and beautiful spot in a wooded area which overlooks Lake Michigan. The cottage was meticulously cleaned and maintained. The living quarters, while not large, were just fine. They were thoughtfully designed and furnished to evoke another, more charming era. The view of the Bay from the living room and the outside deck was priceless. The cottage is perched on a hill, with an entertaining and lovely view of the bay below, at least one of the Sleeping Bear Islands, and boats in the far distance. Kayaking and canoeing are possible right in front of the cottage, and the owners even offer a canoe for people to use. The owners have put in a fire pit near the beach and put out the ingredients for s'mores upon your arrival. Almost best of all, you can sit near the beach at night to see the Milky Way and shooting stars - almost impossible these days because of ambient lights most places. If you want to venture away from the cottage, you are very close to sophisticated cultural activities at the excellent galleries, music, restaurants and shops in Glen Arbor, Leland and other parts of the Leelenau Peninsula. The Interlaken National Music Camp and School (one of the best schools in the world for young musicians) is a fairly short drive away. You can take a tour and see a concert in season. Climbing and otherwise experiencing the Sleeping Bear Dunes is a must-do activity. The beautiful Crystal River with its easy canoe trips is nearby. The bird population is impressive. The cottage is near a spot where outdoor art classes often take place, so any painters out there would be happy. It is also near farm stands which sell outstanding produce. I would highly recommend renting this property and hope to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this review, and we are happy you hope to return to Surf Song! You mentioned the many farm stands. We are fortunate to have an organic farm stand close by which is open 7 days a week! Six surrounding towns have wonderful weekly farmer's markets from 9am to 1pm. Glen Arbor's is on Tuesdays and offers organic fruits/vegetables/meats, homemade breads, granola, cakes and pies, Greek pastries, honey, maple syrup, flowers - even jewelry. Yes, the cultural activities abound here, too! So pleased you were able to participate in the painting classes offered by the Glen Arbor Artist Association and held just down our road. There are several art galleries in Glen Arbor - some new this year. Interlochen's World Youth Symphony is the oldest and most prestigious international youth orchestra in the country! Their outdoor Sunday evening concerts have been a favorite summer activity of our family for many years. The Interlochen Summer Arts Festival offers quality musical entertainment as well - a real treasure to this whole region. Thank you for driving from Maryland to enjoy the beauty of Leelanau County - this "land of delight"! We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back again. Glenn and Kim

ALL-TIME BEST FAMILY VACATION SO FAR

  • 5 of 5
This was our second year coming to Surf Song in Glen Arbor for an August vacation. And it ranks as our all-time favorite vacation so far. The house is comfortable and well-appointed with fresh towels and linens, plenty of space for seven of us, board games galore, and a kitchen stocked with all we needed to whip up our own pancakes from scratch. But what makes Surf Song special is its location, tucked within the Port Oneida land and right up against the water, it is a beautiful spot. We went to sleep each night to the sound of the waves lapping on our beach, rose each morning to look out at the Manitou Islands and Sleeping Bear Point. Exquisite. Every night we roasted smores around the campfire between the house and the water, watching the sun set and the stars turn out. There are few homes like this one, and it's worth every penny.

SURF SONG REVIEW

  • 5 of 5
This is a terrific home in a perfect location. It combines the advantages of being just minutes away from downtown Glen Arbor with its restaurants, shops, amenities, etc., while being just far away enough to feel like you are nestled away in the country. My family with two young children stayed for a week in late July/early August and had a wonderful time. The lake view from the porch is gorgeous especially at sunset and the private beach is a few short steps from the house. There is a firepit between the house and the beach that is great for making s'mores. There is also a lovely hiking/running trail nearby called the Bay View Trail; it snakes through woods and rustic fields with an exquisite lake view at something called Lookout Point. The home was well-equipped with lots of beach toys for the kids, kitchen supplies, and everything else you could possibly need, plus warm personal touches by the owner. I enthusiastically recommend Surf Song to anyone looking for a place to stay around Glen Arbor.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to meet you and your beautiful family, and welcome you all to Surf Song! Yes, the running trails are abundant! Loved what you wrote in the Surf Song memory book, if I may share it: "What an amazing place! The porch with its panoramic view including the dunes, the shoreline along Glen Arbor, and the Manitou Islands is simply magnetic." Delighted you all had so much fun on the beach here. Thanks for driving all the way from Washington, DC! Kim & Glenn

FAMILY TIME

  • 5 of 5
With three generations of 'kids at heart' at Surf Song, we all settled in quickly and had a wonderful week. The house was just as expected, clean and comfortable with wonderful views of the lake. The owner was very attentive to all our needs and even left gifts for the children. The house had everything we needed for play in the water, fires and marshmallows on the beach, bird-watching, and exploring the area on bikes. The location is perfect, allowing you to enjoy the incredible peace of the area, views of islands and dunes, and lovely sunsets, while still providing easy access to town for great dinner, shopping, and live music. The dune climb, wonderful kayak opportunities, trips to local villages, and winery tours are other excursions that make the region so unique. This area is still one of our family's favorite places to share time together, and our time at Surf Song made it easy to make lasting memories.

Owner's Response: We were delighted to welcome your family to Surf Song this summer! As you say, the layout of the house does work particularly well for "3 generations". Every effort is made to provide a very clean, comfortable home with many amenities. So glad you were able to enjoy the beauty - particularly the sunsets - of this very special beach view. That must be why our street is named "Sunset Shores"! Hope you'll come back again and make some more wonderful family memories at Surf Song. Glenn & Kim
