Monks Cottage is a charming 19th century sandstone cottage which backs onto sloping woodland going down to a stream (Hassendean Burn), which flows into the nearby River Teviot (small pebble beach - good for swimming for children or dogs; fishing can be arranged.) If you are lucky you may spot an owl or kingfisher down there and there is often a heron on the river ! There is a gravelled area at the back of the cottage with garden seating for 6.

The cottage is on one level (step up at entrance) and has three bedrooms (a double with small en-suite shower room, a second double across from the bathroom, and a third bedroom with two single beds), a bathroom and a cosy open-plan fully-equipped kitchen/living room with wood-burning stove. (Please note that the original flagstone floor of the kitchen/living room is not completely even and may pose problems for those with mobility issues.) For those who want to keep in touch with the outside world, there is free WiFi. The cottage stands on its own (so you will have no neighbours), fronting a small country road, and you can walk straight out of it onto a section of the Borders Abbeys Way walk, and down to the River Teviot. The village of Denholm (with butcher (recommended)), post office, two pubs, (both serving meals - dogs welcome in the public bars), two cafes, antique shop) is about two miles away - an easy walk- and all the many and varied delights of the Scottish/English Borders are within easy reach. Hawick (about 10 minutes drive away) has supermarkets and all usual amenities. The cottage is perfectly located for access to all the Border towns: Jedburgh, Kelso, Selkirk, Hawick and Melrose. Both Melrose and Kelso are pretty small towns with an excellent range of small individual shops. There are monthly farmers' markets in Hawick, Jedburgh and Kelso which are well worth going to. It is about an hour and a half's drive to central Edinburgh - a must for a day trip.

All seasons are beautiful here. Autumn is a great time to fish, walk (very satisfying to crunch those leaves underfoot) and generally relax. Come and discover the delights of winter: skeleton trees, snowfalls, lovely walks and cosy evenings curled up in front of the wood-burner! In spring there are snowdrops and daffodils all around, new lambs cavorting in the fields and the colours of the new leaves on the surrounding trees are a delight to behold. Make the most of the long evenings in the summer - enjoy the local festivals and Common Ridings or stay a bit longer on the golf course (our area is a paradise for golfers: Minto is the nearest course - about two miles away, but you will truly be spoilt for choice). We will be delighted to see you (and your dog) whatever the season.

We have recently installed Wifi in the cottage just to keep those of you who need to remain hooked-up to the outside world happy!

If you are a larger group, we also have another cottage about a mile away which sleeps 4 (advertised on this website - Property 422576) - perfect for extended families who want to holiday together yet still have some privacy and independence!

If you have any special requests, please do just let us know and we will be delighted to do our best to help. Additional services we offer are housekeeping, initial food shopping and kitchen suppers - please contact us for prices for these. We can also organise fishing, shooting and stalking for you - again, please contact us for further information.

A lovely welcoming cottage

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage in a great location. The cottage has everything you need to make your stay as pleasurable as possible from the comfortable beds to the well equipped kitchen. At the back of the cottage is an area to sit, we were fortunate to have a week of sunny weather, beyond this area is woodland and the river. A great area to walk and children to explore. The nearest village is Denholm, which has a great pub and coffee shop and is within walking distance. It's also in a good position if you want to drive to Jedborough or Hawick or beyond.

We would definitely recommend this cottage and although there are not many reviews on this website there are many good reviews in the visitors book in the cottage.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. We do our utmost to make sure the cottage is comfortable and has all you need to make for an enjoyable stay so are delighted that you were happy with it. As you say, we have not had many reviews on the website but there are plenty of positive ones in our visitor book!

Lovely country cottage.

A fantastic cottage! We found it to be very comfortable, cosy and extremely well equipped. The beds are very comfortable as is the living area. Although it rained for a couple of days during our stay, we were lovely and warm in the cottage. The heating worked fine, plenty of hot water and the log fire was great!

The cottage is situated along a quiet country road and there are some lovely walks straight from the door. Our children are 11 and 13 and had a great time playing in the woods and stream behind the cottage, they are already asking when we can go back!.

There is plenty to see and do in the local area and there are lots of information leaflets in the cottage with ideas.

Jo was very helpful and sent us information about opening times of local shops etc.

A very enjoyable stay, thank you.

Borders Cottage Stay

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I along with his mother and her 3 sisters stayed at Monks cottage for 4 days, after which the 2 of us left for home in the states and the 4 others remained for an additional week and a half. The cottage is small, cozy and has 2 bathrooms. The one en-suite is quite small and the shower is hard to maneuver in. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessities and the fireplace is a nice touch. The area is ideal if you want to spend anytime in the Borders area, with the towns of Denholm and Hawick nearby. The cottage sits along a small street and the parking area for the vehicle is also very close to the street. Although it is a quiet area there is some traffic. The stream behind the cottage is beautiful but it is a steep slope down. The owner brought firewood over to us when we asked if there was any available. We had also asked for more pictures but never received them. It was a comfortable stay but there are a couple of items that need attention and we have mentioned them to the owner. The heater didn't operate correctly at certain times of the day. The cottage has a moldy smell to it and there are bugs. Apparently this is a common problem in this area. I would recommend this cottage to 2 couples and 2 singles, as there are 3 rooms, two with a double bed and 1 with two single beds. The cottage is old but quaint. Jo or Patsey were helpful when we called with concerns.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, we do get midges ("bugs") in Scotland and these tend to be worse in damp and humid weather such as we had in August. We recommend the product "Skin So Soft" by Avon, which we provided to these tenants to help them out. Please note that we do say on the website that only an initial supply of firewood is provided. The heating was on a timer but was adjusted to be on the whole time for the tenants. Please be assured that the heating system does work correctly. The cottage is on a small quiet country road about two miles from the village of Denholm. More photos of the cottage are on the way!

Monks cottage

Monks Cottage is about two miles away from the charming village of Denholm which boasts two pubs, a cafe/restaurant with antique gallery, a tea room, post office/shop and excellent butcher. There is an 18-hole golf course at Minto, about a mile away and many more courses locally. All the Borders towns (Kelso, Melrose, Selkirk, Hawick) are within easy reach. Edinburgh is about an hour and a half away, making a day trip there quite feasible. Don't forget that Northumberland and Cumbria and all their attractions (Alnwick Castle and Garden - scene of Harry Potter's first Quidditch lesson and the crash landing of the flying Ford Anglia car - Potter-themed activities available), Holy Island, the Farne Islands, Bamburgh Castle, Hadrian's Wall to name but a few) are similarly very accessible. Newcastle is about an hour or so away.

Other Activities: Borders Book Festival (in June in Melrose), Rugby Sevens tournaments (Spring), Common Ridings festivals, cashmere outlets, Abbotsford (Walter Scott), riding, walking, cycling, mountain biking (Newcastleton and Peebles), fishing on the world-class River Tweed or its tributaries, tennis (courts at Hawick, Selkirk, St Boswells), sailing (if you have your own equipment) on St Mary's Loch.
