About Chuck Williams

We are Atlanta natives who have enjoyed having a second home in the mountains that is only a couple of hours from the city. We built this cottage as an investment property. This house is enjoyed by friends, family, groups from our church and many guests who return yearly.

Chuck Williams purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Chuck Williams chose Clayton

This house is unique in that the lower level is a separate one-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen. Families enjoying having reunions but perhaps the grands would like a quiet space to 'escape.' The large living space inside adjoins the wraparound porch and makes for comfortable enjoyment of creature comforts indoors and out.

Stunning mountain home!

  • 5 of 5
The pictures do not do the house justice. It is absolutely beautiful, well-built, very clean and has everything you could think of already furnished. The weather while there was very windy but unless you looked out the window and noticed the trees blowing wildly, you would never have known. Windows and doors are very solid and quiet. Décor is very stylish and comfortable and fit the house nicely. Great front porch with swings and rocking chairs to enjoy the view, along with nice wicker furniture with cushions on the screened back porch for enjoying that view. Nice, roomy showers and bathrooms, and hot tub was perfect. Can't think of a thing that we were missing except maybe a truck or jeep next time for the small part of the gravel road in between paved area, but hey, my Lincoln made it up and down quite a few times just fine. Very convenient to town, with wonderful hometown restaurants to choose from and a terrific Ingles to shop at. Can't wait to go back again. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful home with us and for the beautiful mums.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind words about how much you enjoyed our cottage. With so little rain lately the gravel road has dried and rutted. A good rain usually helps the road. We are working with Rabun County to get some work done on their portion of the road to make it better for residents and guests.

nice house, beautiful surroundings

  • 4 of 5
We were very happy with this cabin rental. It was very clean and very comfortable. It felt as if you were far away but it was close to town. The downstairs apartment was perfect for my parents. The only reason I am not giving it an excellent review is because of the small main floor bedroom and bed which my husband and I had. Also everyone complained of the beds being squeaky every time they moved. Everyone said the beds were comfortable tho. It had a bathroom for each room also which was nice. Even with the loud beds we would stay here again. It was a beautiful mountain home with lots of windows to enjoy the view.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay. One thing we love so much is the cottage is so secluded but yet very close to the town of Clayton. Thank you for letting us know that the beds are noisy. We will address this as soon as possible. We hope you will enjoy our place again!

Awesome stay in the mountains!

  • 5 of 5
The cabin was beautiful and the location was peaceful and quiet. We really liked the big kitchen and screened back porch. The wrap around porch was also very nice. Clayton is very close by and has several restaurants and stores for anything you might need. There is a great flea market very close by as well. We went hiking everyday to many different waterfalls in the area. I wish we could have stayed longer. It was very hard to leave! Hope to come back soon. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Very disappointed!!

  • 2 of 5
The house itself was nice, very large and decorated very well. But there were some big issues with our stay. First off, my wife contacted Chuck (the owner) about renting this house for the weekend I was going to be in town for a race. We told him we would be trailering a car and asked if the road was accommodating. He said it was. It wasn't. The road up the mountain was incredibly narrow, mostly gravel, and full of pot holes. I had to ask to leave my car at the track after the 1st day because it was near impossible to get up the road the first night. Also, we had 3 couples for sure and my wife told Chuck we may have a fourth. He said not a problem. You would NOT know it from the ad, but the bottom "apartment" has to be rented separately or in addition (extra money) to the top 3 bedrooms, which is not mentioned in the ad. This was NEVER relayed to us as I believed we were renting a 4Br cabin, as it is advertised, not 3BR. My parents had planned to sleep downstairs. When we arrived we went to the bottom level to check it out and my parents dropped off their luggage. An hour later I get a text from Chuck telling me we didn't pay for the bottom apartment and we would have to send him the extra $200-something ASAP or get off the property the next morning (even though we paid for 2 nights). VERY RUDE! Apparently he drove by, saw the bottom level lights on, and sent the text. Now Chuck, my parents had to sleep in the twin beds. And why did you tell my wife we were ok to have 4 couples if you only planned on giving us 3BR's? The fact you couldn't knock on the door, or give me a call, instead of texting me at 10pm shows a lack of professionalism. The next day, when we left, I did not lock the deadbolt on the door but when we came back that evening the deadbolt was locked which means he entered while we were gone. Again, VERY RUDE. Also, some of the guests towels smelled like mold and there were no TVs in any of the bedrooms. Also found a 4" spider (biggest I had seen outside of a zoo) in the tub in the main level bathroom as soon as we walked in the door the first day. Had the house not been a nice one, I would give this a 1-star rating for the way the owner treated us the night we arrived (through text) and the POOR communication about the bottom level being separate and an additional charge even though we were told 4 couples would be accommodated. I come back to this event every year and I wouldn't stay here for free if offered.

Owner's Response: I regret that there was misunderstanding about the rental of our cottage. I try to be very clear based on the number in the party as to the options availalbe when renting from us. It is true that the house has 4 bedrooms and accomodates up to 10 people; however the rental and cleaning rates vary with how much of the house people choose to enjoy. I did not say the property had to be vacated, but I did say if the lower level was going to be used then the difference in the rental and cleaning fee would need to be paid. There is a locking door to separate the lower level which is a one bedroom apartment from the main and second floors. We have depended on the honor system leaving the house open from top to bottom so that guests can see just how nice the house is for future visits. This is the first time that we have experienced this confusion. As far as the deadbolt being locked this is a mystery. Neither I nor any of my contractors (cleaning, landscaper, plumber, etc.) would enter the cottage without guest approval. As for our road, every guest receives an email giving codes to access the property and instructions for the cottage. In this letter it clearly points out the bottom of the road (less than an 1/8 of a mile) is gravel. Once you enter Bartram Ridge the road becomes paved and is paved all the way to the house. The gravel portion is county maintained and may be rutted at times between monthly grading but I have never found it difficult to drive up the mountain.

Wonderful Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5
WOW! What a wonderful time we had at Papa's Bear Den! The pictures do not do your beautiful home and properties justice. We had all the amenities of home and then some. Loved the quiet and cool, YES COOL surroundings. Nice location, as our home away from home worked well with our visiting of "the relatives" in Franklin, North Carolina. Thank you Chuck for your warm hospitality! Winnie, our little terrier said thank you too!

Cosy, Quiet and Convenient Getaway from Atlanta

  • 5 of 5
This charming cabin is a short drive away from our home in Atlanta and was the perfect getaway location for a long weekend. The hot tub is perfectly situated to view the sunset, one of the best features for a Valentine's weekend visit! The cabin is convenient to many scenic drives and locations like Highlands NC and Lake Burton. The eat-in kitchen is great for families to reconnect over a meal and plan the next day's adventures. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to book this lovely cabin again for an even longer visit.

Map

For outdoor enthusiasts there several hiking trails from easy to difficult many with beautiful waterfalls and vistas. Many people enjoy the drive (45-60 minutes) to Highlands, NC. If you drive to Fanklin NC and take Hwy 64 up to Highlands you will enjoy the beauty of several water falls from your car. For those who like casinos, Cherokee NC is an easy and beautiful drive. Harrah's has a casino there, but also, you will find many attractions that the whole family can enjoy. White water rafting is fun for many. Both class 2 and 3 rivers are close by. Several companies offer guided river excursions. Beautiful Helen GA, a Bavarian style village, is a pleasant drive and the kids can enjoying tubing in the beautiful river that runs through the village. Tallulah Gorge is a must see and has a very interesting visitors center with a movie highlighting the development of our region. There is a series of 3 lakes that were built by Georgia Power in the early 1900's to produce hydo-electricity. These lakes, Seed, Burton and Rabun offer opportunities to enjoy the public beaches or maybe rent a pontoon or other water craft and enjoy the splendor of the water while looking at the mountains surrounding the lakes. Dining in the area is varried and you can find places to eat to fit your budget--anything from Chik-fil-a to the Lake Rabun Hotel.
