About Rod Desborough

We purchased the property in 1970 and built 'Uncle Bob's' in 2001 as our retirement, year round, week end home. In 2011 we built a new house to replace the original cottage on the property that was destroyed by fire the previous year. We now use the new house as our week end retreat which in turn makes Uncle Bob's available for use by others. We enjoyed our 10 years in Uncle Bob's and we are sure our guests will as well. We'll tell you the Uncle Bob story when you arrive!

Rod Desborough purchased this apartment in 1970

Why Rod Desborough chose Pictou

Our family have been spending summers at the property for about 50 years . Easy access to a safe, sandy beach, warm salt water, lots of lawns, places to sit, barbacue and walk make it a special spot. We think the views from the great room and the attached deck are spectaular, including the sunrises.

What makes this apartment unique

Our location is 5 minutes from the town of Pictou which has great grocery, etc. shopping as well as the rich history of it's Scottish Heritage.

We have ready access to PEI via the ferry just a few minutes drive as well as being within a 2 hour drive of Halifax, and it's airport, as well as Cape Breton and all it has to offer. We also have some fine dining within a few minutes drive including Pictou Lodge.

Or just relax at Uncle Bob's and read, enjoy the views or the beach!

Amazing property, amazing owners!!

  • 5 of 5
From the moment we arrived at this property, we fell in love with it. The grounds and view to the water are amazing. Kay came out to greet us upon our arrival and gave us a detailed tour of the property. It is every bit as lovely and comfortable as the photos portray it to be. We immediately felt at home and knew we would have a great vacation. Rod even had our state flag hanging from our upper deck, talk about attention to detail!!. Our view from the upper and lower decks was beautiful and gave us a great opportunity to see the deer out in the yard both in the morning and in the evening.
We were able to do the Cabot Trail in 1 day, however, at least 2 is recommended. My husband caught several mackerel and a striped bass right from the beach, so needless to say, he was in his glory. We enjoyed a couple of evening campfires down by the beach and enjoyed the company of our hosts, they are lovely people.
This was our first trip to Nova Scotia but we will definitely be back, would love to explore other regions of this diverse province.
Thank you Rod and Kay for opening Uncle Bob's to guests, you truly made it a vacation to remember.

What a Unique and Perfect Holiday

  • 5 of 5
We had 5 of the best days anyone could ask for on a Maritime holiday. Other than Hurricane Arthur ruining the last 2 days for us and returning home to Ontario early,...we enjoyed your gorgeous cottage overlooking the Strait,..feasted on fresh lobster from down the road, took the opportunity to go around the Cabot Trail and relax and enjoy the warmth of the down east hospitality. Thank you Rod and Kay for letting us stay at Uncle Bob's Cottage,..it was truly the most comfortable and cleanest accommodations anyone could wish for. You thought of everything, there was absolutely nothing missing from this little secret hide-away. We enjoyed the walks down to the beach and watching the fisherman go by in their boats as they brought in their nets after the lobster season. We would come again for sure,..thank you so much for your warmth and hospitality, it truly was appreciated.

Owner's Response: Thank you Peter and Lois for your kind comments and for being such perfect guests. We are especially pleased that Peter had his feed of lobster. Tropical Storm Arthur was a lot of wind, little rain, lots of sunshine and a day's worth of work picking up downed branches. We think you were wise leaving a little early since the drive through NB would have been an adventure during and after the storm.

Cozy and Comfortable!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you Rod and Kay for sharing your wonderful cottage with us for the month of October. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fall beauty of Nova Scotia. We've stayed in many vacation rentals, and this was by far the cleanest and most comfortable. It felt like home from the moment we walked in the door, but with a much, much better view.

Seaside Treasure!

  • 5 of 5
Uncle Bob's provided us with a VERY comfortable, and unforgettable vacationing experience. From the moment we walked in, we felt like we were home [or at least in a cozy + familiar place to call home for the week]. The views are stellar - we were able to see four different fireworks displays from neighbouring towns on Canada Day! The amenities are fantastic, with everything a family could need for a home away from home.
We will definitely return to Uncle Bob's in the future and will recommend to everyone we know!
Family Faves: full kitchen with EVERYTHING!; washer / dryer; garage access; beach access; wifi; plenty of storage; room to park a couple of vehicles; deck with BBQ; lawn for activities; close to town for groceries etc; friendly owners who even 'primed' the fridge with some staple items!!

We had a very memorable trip 'home' and this was perfect for our infant son's FIRST trip to Canada!!

See you soon Uncle Bob!!

Perfect Place in Pictiukl

  • 5 of 5
If you're like me you spend hours searching for the perfect vacation spot. Look no more. Uncle Bob's will exceed your expectations in every way. Historic Pictou is an ideal spot for exploring the Northumberland Strait and Cape Breton Island. This apartment is like something out of a travel magazine -it's tastefully decorated and has everything you could need for your stay. Mornings with your coffee and late afternoons with a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the grapes, the frog pond and the property are priceless. Rod and Kay are wonderful hosts - attentive in every way and great travel guides.
