The Garden Cottage is about two miles (a lovely short walk) from the charming village of Denholm (post office/shop, butcher,2 pubs, tea room, cafe with antique gallery etc ), a short walk away along a section of the Borders Abbeys Way. The cottage has accommodation on two floors. The ground floor has a high-quality fully-fitted kitchen with Siemens appliances (please note there is a step down) adjoining a dining/seating area with wood burning stove, a fully-equipped bathroom with excellent water pressure and a cosy separate sitting room with open fire (Freeview TV and DVD player). There is a washing machine and a separate dryer just near the bathroom. Upstairs are two cosy cottage bedrooms with low combed ceilings and lovely views towards the hill of Ruberslaw. There are secluded areas for sitting out at front and back (front looks over arable field leading to River Teviot,a key tributary of the Tweed) and paved back patio - just the place to sip a glass of wine after a great day out. With all the Border towns and abbeys (Kelso, Melrose, Jedburgh, Selkirk, Hawick) within easy reach, the centre of Edinburgh about an hour and a half away, and the stunning Northumberland coast about an hour's drive, the cottage is ideally situated for touring this beautiful unspoilt region.

Northumberland and its many attractions (Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, Alnwick - Castle is the scene of famous scenes from the Harry Potter movies: Harry's first Quidditch lesson and the crash landing of the Ford Anglia car - Potter-themed activities are available there), Chillingham Castle (wild white cattle) etc) are very accessible. Fish and swim (probably only children will brave the water) from our pebbly beach on the River Teviot.

The area is rich in natural beauty, and fantastic for walkers, cyclists, fishermen etc. Walking trails range from St Cuthbert's Way (Melrose to Northumberland coast), the Borders Abbeys Way (68 mile circular route linking the four great Borders Abbeys), to the Southern Upland Way (linking Scotland's east and west coasts). You will find outstanding mountain biking at Glentrees & Innerleithen, and Newcastleton. For planned routes, you can make use of options such as the Four Abbeys Cycle Route, and the Tweed Cycle Way (from Biggar to Berwick-upon-Tweed). If you are interested in fishing, see www.fishpal for more information on fishing seasons, booking and prices. If you would like to arrange fly fishing casting lessons or a day or two fishing on the Tweed, Teviot or other local waters, we can organise this for you. Similarly, if you would like to do some shooting or stalking in season, just let us know and we can organise it for you. Sailing is possible at St Mary's Loch, but you would need to hire equipment.

Specifically for children - they usually love splashing about in the nearby River Teviot, where there is a small pebble beach - a short walk from the cottage. There is also a donkey sanctuary (open at week-ends), a 'pick-your-own' strawberry farm near St Boswells, and a great adventure playground and other delights at Bowhill, all of which are popular with our younger guests. Climbing the local Minto Hills and Ruberslaw Hill is a good way to work off excess energy before a delicious lunch in the cafes in Denholm. Nearby Eastcote Archery Centre has indoor and outdoor ranges and is suitable for ages 10+. For rainy days, there are cinemas in Hawick and Galashiels and an ice rink in Kelso. Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels all have swimming pools. There are golf courses everywhere, the nearest at Minto about 2 miles away. Kelso Race Course also offers a great day out for all the family.

Historic attractions include Floors Castle (largest inhabited house in Scotland), Manderston (famous silver staircase), Mellerstain (beautiful Adam house), and Traquair (romantic and oldest inhabited house in Scotland). Abbotsford (the home of the famous novelist, Sir Walter Scott and newly re-opened after extensive refurbishment) is also definitely worth a visit, as are Smailholm Tower (fortified 15th century tower house with splendid views) and Hermitage Castle (magnificently bleak and forbidding). Do ask us for more suggestions.

Additional services we offer are housekeeping, initial shopping and kitchen suppers - please contact us for a list of what is available and prices. If there is anything else we can do to make your holiday more enjoyable, please just let us know. If you are part of a larger party, you may also be interested in our other cottage (see Ref 422835) which sleeps 6 and is about a mile away.

Why Jo Clough chose Hawick

The former Gardener's Cottage (part is set into the wall of the old walled garden - currently just grass until we finalise our restoration plans), we knocked down walls to create a bright open-plan kitchen/living room (don't worry - there is also a separate sitting room with open fire) and put in a new staircase to replace the old ladder-like version which would have challenged even the most able-bodied. A variety of higgledy-piggledy sheds around the cottage were swept away and in their place we put up a porch (useful for muddy coats and boots) and a paved terrace at the back where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or two, maybe in company with squirrels, deer and a variety of bird life, including our resident kestrel.

Garden cottage April 2015

  • 5 of 5

Great location - tranquil and as quiet as you could wish for. Modern but cosy cottage that retains that country charm. Heard comments about not having tv in every room and yes wifi would be an added bonus but really if your booking this type of break then those things should be the least of your concerns. Relax in front of the log fire and enjoy getting away from channel hopping and texting. Main bed is fantastic and best sleep in ages. Bathroom was very well maintained as was the kitchen everything you need.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. While we have lots of positive comments about the cottage in the cottage guest book, we do not have many online reviews so an additional thank you for taking the time to submit one. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay! On the subject of Wifi, which we are planning to put in, guest opinion seems interestingly quite divided as to whether or not it would be a good thing -many guests seem, as you did, to relish the peace and quiet and 'getting away from it all'.

Garden Cottage Denholm nr Hawick

The listing description was totally accurate for this lovely cottage. The location was ideal for touring the Borders. The cottage was spacious very comfortable with many extras. The log burning fire was a real treat. The property throughout was very clean and well maintained with quality fittings. The outside area was a great bonus for our two dogs who had a marvelous time hunting and running in complete safety. While not in your face we knew that Mrs Clough and staff were only a phone call away if needed. We would highly recommend this property to anybody wanting a quiet get away from it all break. Denholm is a lovely village with good facilities including the Auld Cross keys Hotel who serve good food in a pleasant manner. We have already booked to return in March for a longer stay

Owner's Response: We are always delighted to hear that our guests have had a relaxing break - which is exactly what we are here to provide. We have recently received a gold award for consistently receiving high customer satisfaction scores via a holiday rental agency we are also registered with, and we are thrilled that these guests' experience accords with that.

A peaceful long weekend at Garden Cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed at Garden cottage from Friday until Monday. If you are looking for somewhere to get away from it all and totally relax in beautiful surroundings then this is the place for you.

The cottage has everything that you need especially if you have a pet that likes exercise!! It is situated in a peaceful idyllic location but still near enough for every day essentials if needed. We will certainly be going back again in the future.

Great cottage, fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

We had a brilliant time at this cottage. All the appliances are of an excellent quality and it is very comfortable. The outside space is brilliant with a patio with furniture at the back, a walled huge garden, large gravelled area plus garden at the front. The views are amazing and it is very peaceful but very accessible to all the Borders towns.

There is plenty to do and see around Garden Cottage, from walking (can walk out to part of 68 mile circular Borders Abbeys Way direct from the cottage) and fishing in the renowned River Tweed (also possible on its tributary the Teviot) to visiting the romantic Borders Abbeys (Jedburgh, Kelso, Dryburgh, Melrose), attending the famous Rugby Sevens tournaments in the different Borders towns and Borders Book Festival, and shopping for cashmere bargains at the local mill shops. Historic houses such as Floors Castle, Mellerstain, Manderston, and Paxton House are all within easy reach. Golf courses abound, the nearest being Minto, about a mile from the cottage; there are also several practice ranges very nearby. There is riding at nearby Ashkirk and an archery centre close to Denholm. Race meetings are often held at Kelso Racecourse, about 25 minutes away. Edinburgh is about an hour and a half away by car so a day trip there is easy - particularly appealing during the Festival and Fringe in August. Beaches in East Lothian or Nothumberland are also easily visited in a day trip.

Other Activities: Rugby Sevens, trout/salmon fishing (Rivers Tweed and Teviot), shooting (Braidwood Clays, stalking etc), Borders Common Ridings (historic festivals), cashmere outlets, Abbotsford (former home of Sir Walter Scott). If you are part of a larger group, we also have a three-bedroom cottage about a mile away (Ref 422835).

Golf: You can buy a Freedom of the Fairways Golf Passport for three or five days (for adults the respective costs are £120 and £160; seniors: £60 and £100), which allows access to 21 beautiful golf courses (supplements payable for three of these). It is available from 1 April to 31 October and a maximum 36 holes can be played at any one course. Tee times should be booked in advance. You can find out more and buy a Golf Passport from any of the Scottish Borders VisitScotland information centres, by calling 01835 863 170 or by booking online at

The nearest courses to the cottage are Minto (tel: 01450 870 220) and Hawick (tel: 01450 372 293). Minto is set in undulating parkland between the Minto Hills and Teviot Valley. Hawick is the oldest golf club in the Scottish Borders and the course offers some of the best views in the region. It counts Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie among its honorary members. Other nearby courses include Kelso, Jedburgh, Roxburghe, St Boswells (9 hole), Selkirk (9 hole) and The Woll.
