The Garden Cottage is about two miles from the charming village of Denholm (post office/shop, butcher,2 pubs, tea room, cafe with antique gallery etc ), a short walk away along a section of the Borders Abbeys Way. The cottage has accommodation on two floors. The ground floor has a high-quality fully-fitted kitchen with Siemens appliances (please note there is a step down) adjoining a dining/seating area with wood burning stove, a fully-equipped bathroom with excellent water pressure and a cosy separate sitting room with open fire (Freeview TV and DVD player). There is a washing machine and a separate dryer just near the bathroom. Upstairs are two cosy cottage bedrooms with low combed ceilings and lovely views towards the hill of Ruberslaw. There are secluded areas for sitting out at front and back (front looks over arable field leading to River Teviot,a key tributary of the Tweed) and paved back patio - just the place to sip a glass of wine after a great day out. With all the Border towns and abbeys (Kelso, Melrose, Jedburgh, Selkirk, Hawick) within easy reach, Edinburgh about an hour and a half away, and the stunning Northumberland coast about an hour's drive, the cottage is ideally situated for touring this beautiful unspoilt region.
Northumberland and its many attractions (Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, Alnwick - Castle is the scene of famous scenes from the Harry Potter movies: Harry's first Quidditch lesson and the crash landing of the Ford Anglia car - Potter-themed activities are available there), Chillingham Castle (wild white cattle) etc) are very accessible. Fish and swim (probably only children will brave the water) from our pebbly beach on the River Teviot.
The area is rich in natural beauty, and fantastic for walkers, cyclists, fishermen etc. Walking trails range from St Cuthbert's Way (Melrose to Northumberland coast), the Borders Abbeys Way (68 mile circular route linking the four great Borders Abbeys), to the Southern Upland Way (linking Scotland's east and west coasts). You will find outstanding mountain biking at Glentrees & Innerleithen, and Newcastleton. For planned routes, you can make use of options such as the Four Abbeys Cycle Route, and the Tweed Cycle Way (from Biggar to Berwick-upon-Tweed). If you are interested in fishing, see www.fishpal for more information on fishing seasons, booking and prices. If you would like to arrange fly fishing casting lessons or a day or two fishing on the Tweed, Teviot or other local waters, we can organise this for you. Similarly, if you would like to do some shooting or stalking in season, just let us know and we can organise it for you. Sailing is possible at St Mary's Loch, but you would need to hire equipment.
Specifically for children - they usually love splashing about in the nearby River Teviot, where there is a small pebble beach - a short walk from the cottage. There is also a deer park near Jedburgh and a donkey sanctuary (open at week-ends), a 'pick-your-own' strawberry farm near St Boswells, and a great adventure playground and other delights at Bowhill, all of which are popular with our younger guests. Climbing the local Minto Hills and Ruberslaw Hill is a good way to work off excess energy before a delicious lunch in the cafes in Denholm. Nearby Eastcote Archery Centre has indoor and outdoor ranges and is suitable for ages 10+. For rainy days, there are cinemas in Hawick and Galashiels and an ice rink in Kelso. Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels all have swimming pools. There are golf courses everywhere, the nearest at Minto about 2 miles away. Kelso Race Course also offers a great day out for all the family.
Historic attractions include Floors Castle (largest inhabited house in Scotland), Manderston (famous silver staircase), Mellerstain (beautiful Adam house), and Traquair (romantic and oldest inhabited house in Scotland). Abbotsford (the home of the famous novelist, Sir Walter Scott and newly re-opened after extensive refurbishment) is also definitely worth a visit, as are Smailholm Tower (fortified 15th century tower house with splendid views) and Hermitage Castle (magnificently bleak and forbidding). Do ask us for more suggestions.
Additional services we offer are housekeeping, initial shopping and kitchen suppers - please contact us for a list of what is available and prices. If there is anything else we can do to make your holiday more enjoyable, please just let us know. If you are part of a larger party, you may also be interested in our other cottage (see Ref 422835) which sleeps 6 and is about a mile away.

The former Gardener's Cottage (part is set into the wall of the old walled garden - currently just grass until we finalise our restoration plans), we knocked down walls to create a bright open-plan kitchen/living room (don't worry - there is also a separate sitting room with open fire) and put in a new staircase to replace the old ladder-like version which would have challenged even the most able-bodied. A variety of higgledy-piggledy sheds around the cottage were swept away and in their place we put up a porch (useful for muddy coats and boots) and a paved terrace at the back where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or two, maybe in company with squirrels, deer and a variety of bird life, including our resident kestrel.
