Comfortable, spacious pied-à-terre just:

-- 6 blocks from the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum,

-- 8 blocks to the Smithsonian Castle,

-- 1 block from Washington’s Southwest Waterfront, and

-- a15-minute walk to the Tidal Basin’s cherry blossom trees!

Or hop on the Metro at the L’Enfant Plaza subway hub – 4 blocks away – to get to Arlington Memorial Cemetery, the National Zoo, the White House or U.S. Capitol in minutes.

A new grocery store, drugstore, and other shops are four blocks away – and so is a Capital Bikeshare docking station, where you can rent a bike then drop it off wherever you’re going – or return one that you picked up from elsewhere.

Our daylight basement means plenty of light but the apartment stays cool, even in DC’s humid summers. The new kitchen is fully equipped. . . the new travertine+marble bathroom has a step-in shower. . . a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed and and flat screen TVs in the LR and BR make this a haven after a hectic day.

A reserved parking space – a rarity in the city – opens other options for easily getting around town.

At dusk, listen for the ship’s horn as the Odyssey dinner cruise pulls out of the nearby marina. . . stay in and grill on the enclosed back patio (shared with fellow VRBO guests upstairs). . . stroll to DC’s floating fish market for the freshest seafood in town. . . book theater tickets for a memorable evening at the stunning Arena Stage showplace two blocks away. . . or head to nearby restaurants:

* Cantina Marina is a fun neighborhood watering hole and restaurant on the water where the Sequoia (once the presidential yacht) is docked

* Phillips Seafoood and other reliable favorites also line the waterfront

* The Mandarin Oriental Hotel (whose five-star elegance draws foreign dignitaries and VIPs) has a choice of restaurants

* A mile north, Gallery Place/Chinatown is one of Washington’s nightlife and dining destinations -- and where the Caps and Wizards play

A Supreme Court Chief Justice was the first owner of our house, and the neighborhood remains home to many long-time residents. While you’re here, why not join them in the conclusion that – with everything else to do in DC – there is no reason to waste time commuting!

Excellent hotel alternative

  • 5 of 5
I spent four nights here while in DC for an event. I'm very familiar with DC, but I'm tired of expensive hotels in noisy parts of town. This apartment is in a quiet, mostly residential area, and I commuted to my event by walking and using the Metro just like thousands of DC residents do. This apartment was much less than the cost of a hotel, and the parking space with the apartment saved me the cost of downtown parking. I sill had business downtown after checking out, but I drove my car to a Metro station and, again, used the Metro to get downtown. The apartment is about a 12-minute walk to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. The apartment itself was everything I needed--clean, comfortable bed, well-equipped kitchen. I didn't need it, but there is a new-looking washer-dryer combination. I would probably recommend a more spacious alternative for a familyeric four or more, but for one or two people, I'm not sure how you could do better, and I would recommend it. Deborah is a very responsive owner. I had no problems, but she was quick to answer questions. The description of the apartment is accurate.

Convenient and well-equipped SW apartment

  • 5 of 5
I stayed two weeks at this English basement apartment. It was for work, and only me there except for a couple of days my husband came down, and it was more than spacious.

There's parking right near the door, but if you are without a car there are bus stops and Metro stations nearby, along with a grocery, CVS and a few restaurants.

There seemed to be every conceivable thing you might need or want already stocked, so no need to buy a whole box of salt to cook a meal.

DC was experiencing record cold temperatures while I was there, but the apartment held two large space heaters in addition to the furnace ducts, so areas could be heated quickly. The walled garden behind is very pretty (though not useful at 0 degrees!

The huge construction project two blocks away to rebuild the waterfront did not cause any car or foot traffic problems (or noise). When that is done, this apartment will probably cost triple.

The city itself is always worth spending time in. This apartment would suit a wide variety of travelers who'd like much more space and many more comforts than a hotel can provide.

The owner was quickly responsive to any questions. I'd love to have the chance to stay again.

Great weekend

  • 5 of 5
The apartment suited our needs perfectly. The few minor problems - the wifi went out - was fixed as soon as we notified the owner. The location is great. Don't miss the fish market. Dinner special at Station 4 was very good and great value. The Metro cards were a nice thing to have. The bed was really comfortable. The kitchen complete - and the Safeway store is really close. We would definitely stay again -the patio in the back looked great but we stayed during a record cold.

Everything you need!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were extremely comfortable in this cozy apartment. It was immaculate, well appointed with everything you could possibly need. We walked to all of the museums, the White House, a great bar and grill on the waterfront, the fresh fish market, Safeway. The wifi worked perfectly, as did everything else. We were delighted. Thanks to Deborah who answered any questions we had, gave us wonderful directions and enabled us to have a flawless visit!

Sightseeing in DC

This unit has so many fine qualities : Very clean and accurately described, all appliances in good condition and working order, walking distance to the National Mall, convenient to 2 Metro stations (we preferred the Waterfront due to it's closer proximity), designated parking spot, safe neighborhood, restaurants (try the Monday special at Station 4) and grocery nearby, very well stocked with linens & kitchen items, attentive and responsive owner. There were also some small surprises: motion detector night lights, brochures, maps, and Metro Cards on lanyards. My 80+ year old mother and I managed the Metro system very easily. I read some negative comments about the dehumidifiers - I personally felt they provided nice "white noise" to the city sounds. We had tenants above us, but we only noticed walking noise when we were in the kitchen/living room and not in the bedroom. It was not obtrusive at all. I would definitely rent this unit again.

A very unique and great place to stay in the DC area. Walking to the mall is a breeze and the parking space was just what we needed. This place will only get better with completion of the reconstruction of the wharf area. We especially enjoyed the fresh tomatoes and peaches provided by the owners, This is something we have never encountered before. We would recommend this apartment to anyone.
