Comfortable, spacious pied-à-terre just:
-- 6 blocks from the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum,
-- 8 blocks to the Smithsonian Castle,
-- 1 block from Washington’s Southwest Waterfront, and
-- a15-minute walk to the Tidal Basin’s cherry blossom trees!
Or hop on the Metro at the L’Enfant Plaza subway hub – 4 blocks away – to get to Arlington Memorial Cemetery, the National Zoo, the White House or U.S. Capitol in minutes.
A new grocery store, drugstore, and other shops are four blocks away – and so is a Capital Bikeshare docking station, where you can rent a bike then drop it off wherever you’re going – or return one that you picked up from elsewhere.
Our daylight basement means plenty of light but the apartment stays cool, even in DC’s humid summers. The new kitchen is fully equipped. . . the new travertine+marble bathroom has a step-in shower. . . a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed and and flat screen TVs in the LR and BR make this a haven after a hectic day.
A reserved parking space – a rarity in the city – opens other options for easily getting around town.
At dusk, listen for the ship’s horn as the Odyssey dinner cruise pulls out of the nearby marina. . . stay in and grill on the enclosed back patio (shared with fellow VRBO guests upstairs). . . stroll to DC’s floating fish market for the freshest seafood in town. . . book theater tickets for a memorable evening at the stunning Arena Stage showplace two blocks away. . . or head to nearby restaurants:
* Cantina Marina is a fun neighborhood watering hole and restaurant on the water where the Sequoia (once the presidential yacht) is docked
* Phillips Seafoood and other reliable favorites also line the waterfront
* The Mandarin Oriental Hotel (whose five-star elegance draws foreign dignitaries and VIPs) has a choice of restaurants
* A mile north, Gallery Place/Chinatown is one of Washington’s nightlife and dining destinations -- and where the Caps and Wizards play
A Supreme Court Chief Justice was the first owner of our house, and the neighborhood remains home to many long-time residents. While you’re here, why not join them in the conclusion that – with everything else to do in DC – there is no reason to waste time commuting!
The apartment is even better than it looks online! It's is really clean and has everything you need! Deborah, was amazing with all of my questions! And so incredibly helpful with everything we needed. What a huge blessing this was on our family trip!! Would stay here again in a heartbeat and will suggest it to friends coming to the area.
Location - about a 3 block walk from the Waterfront metro station and a 5 block walk to the L'Enfant Plaza metro station. The Safeway supermarket was next to the Waterfront station. There are Metro cards so you can travel on the subway that come with the apartment. Its a 20 min walk to the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial.
Amenities - it has all the nice things for you to cook. There's a microwave, stove, and plenty of pots, pans, and utensils to work with if you plan on cooking. There's a coffee maker. There's also a washer/dryer combo that will help cut down on the amount of clothes you have to pack. There's DirectTV if you want to watch tv. Plenty of dvds to watch, too.
Bed - the bed was big and pretty comfy.
Room - there was plenty of room for myself, my husband and 5 year old daughter.
Prompt responses - the WiFi went out and the owner promptly answered us. She also promptly refunded our deposit.
Parking - it comes with a dedicated parking spot at no extra cost.
Noise - I'm not sure who was staying upstairs or if they live there but some nights it felt like Jurassic Park was on. They had a tendency to stomp around. It was pretty loud in the living room. You could hear conversations outside as clear as if they were standing next to you. Some boys decided that playing tennis against the buildings wall was a good idea at 9PM. I don't believe there is a lot of soundproofing in this unit.
Electricity - there is a note not to turn on the dishwasher or washer and stove at the same time or you will blow a circuit. We had neither on and was using the microwave and it just stopped working. Not sure why but it was a little disconcerting.
Shower - I realize I chose this unit knowing it didnt have a bathtub. It only has a shower and the shower head is fixed. This made it difficult for me to give my daughter a shower. If there was a shower head on a hand held shower hose it would have been a lot easier. I wouldn't stay here if you have younger kids.
WiFi reception - It's not the greatest in this apartment. It was spotty at times especially in the evening. I'm assuming because it is a basement apartment but I'm not sure.
Water - this is actually more of a warning to people travelling to DC. The water tastes terrible. I mean really terrible. Did I mention the water tastes terrible? Dont use the water from the tap. Buy some bottled water from the Safeway to make coffee or tea or any other drink.
This unit is close to the Waterfront Metro and the bus stop is right on the corner. We found it easy to get any where we wanted to. It is the lower half of a brownstone so you have a couple windows in the front and a patio door in the back. It's about a half story in the ground so there about 6-8 steps to walk down to go in the front door.
We found Station 4, which is a great restaraunt with nice outdoor seating, across from the Safeway and Z-Burger is right next door. We also hit the Safeway for snacks and beverages. You have to haul the stuff about 4 blocks back to the unit but it's not too far. We did walk over to Cantina Marina but it was in the evening and the place was packed. We really like Station 4 the best. One morning we took the Metro up to the White House area and found Woodward Table, which has a side cafe called WTF - Woodward Takeout Food. They had the best breakfast there.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the area and went to a play that was at the Arena Theater that is about 2 blocks away - 1 block east of Safeway and Station 4 and about 1 block south of the unit. The only two drawbacks are that there's a lot of construction going on down at the marina so you could hear them driving pilings, which started early in the morning, and you can hear the people upstairs. However, we weren't in the unit that much as we were out on the town seeing museums, monuments, the Capitol, etc. we would highly recommend this unit for 2 people.
The unit was perfect for us. It was a reasonable walk to the subway in either direction. There was a grocery store nearby and so was the waterfront. Deborah was terrific! She was quick to answer any questions, provided information about navigating the city before we arrived and had so many amenities in the apartment! I highly recommend!
Let me start by saying the level of service and care received by Deborah was superb! Our flight was delayed due to weather but Deborah worked with us and accommodated our schedule.
The home was perfect, much larger than I thought it would be, a great amount of space for two but could easily fit more adults. Everything we needed was right there for us. It was truly a home away from home. If you want somewhere close enough to monuments, museums, and the convention center area, this is it! Great location, and great home!
Location is prime! Family of 4 stayed! Plenty of room! No car... Waterside station very close. Has resturants and grocery store! Perfect place to stay when visiting D.C.!!!
