Comfortable, spacious pied-à-terre just:

-- 6 blocks from the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum,

-- 8 blocks to the Smithsonian Castle,

-- 1 block from Washington’s Southwest Waterfront, and

-- a15-minute walk to the Tidal Basin’s cherry blossom trees!

Or hop on the Metro at the L’Enfant Plaza subway hub – 4 blocks away – to get to Arlington Memorial Cemetery, the National Zoo, the White House or U.S. Capitol in minutes.

A new grocery store, drugstore, and other shops are four blocks away – and so is a Capital Bikeshare docking station, where you can rent a bike then drop it off wherever you’re going – or return one that you picked up from elsewhere.

Our daylight basement means plenty of light but the apartment stays cool, even in DC’s humid summers. The new kitchen is fully equipped. . . the new travertine+marble bathroom has a step-in shower. . . a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed and and flat screen TVs in the LR and BR make this a haven after a hectic day.

A reserved parking space – a rarity in the city – opens other options for easily getting around town.

At dusk, listen for the ship’s horn as the Odyssey dinner cruise pulls out of the nearby marina. . . stay in and grill on the enclosed back patio (shared with fellow VRBO guests upstairs). . . stroll to DC’s floating fish market for the freshest seafood in town. . . book theater tickets for a memorable evening at the stunning Arena Stage showplace two blocks away. . . or head to nearby restaurants:

* Cantina Marina is a fun neighborhood watering hole and restaurant on the water where the Sequoia (once the presidential yacht) is docked

* Phillips Seafoood and other reliable favorites also line the waterfront

* The Mandarin Oriental Hotel (whose five-star elegance draws foreign dignitaries and VIPs) has a choice of restaurants

* A mile north, Gallery Place/Chinatown is one of Washington’s nightlife and dining destinations -- and where the Caps and Wizards play

A Supreme Court Chief Justice was the first owner of our house, and the neighborhood remains home to many long-time residents. While you’re here, why not join them in the conclusion that – with everything else to do in DC – there is no reason to waste time commuting!

We had an awesome time in DC and this place made it perfect. With two boys there was just enough room to eat, sleep, and wind down from long days of sightseeing. You can walk just a few blocks to pretty much ALL of DC's landmarks, The Waterfront, Nationals stadium and a METRO station. All amenities worked perfectly and were nicely updated. Plenty of those "extras" like tons of towels and kitchen items for cooking. Beds were comfy and bathroom was roomy... Only drawback was living below other tenants (it is a daylight basement so that's to be expected) whom who may hear walking around and chatting, BUT there were on similar timelines as us for sightseeing, so not real issue. They were mostly courteous to stay quiet by bedtime. Lastly having was parking spot was a BIG plus if driving in.

Fairly nice place to stay, if nobody is upstairs.

I'll get the negatives out of the way first. The upstairs guests sounded like elephants walking above you, and when they cooked food (which unfortunately these guests did a lot) you soon knew exactly what they were having to eat as it soon came wafting down into our unit. You could even hear them talking upstairs if we did not have the TV on in our unit. The (one and only) thermostat to the HVAC is located in the upper unit and I woke up several times in the middle of the night while we were there, literally in a sweat. Also the furnace/fan is behind a screen in the kitchen of the downstairs unit and just another layer of noise to deal with. The patio is right out from the living room and when the upstairs guests were out there (which unfortunately again, ours were a lot) they were looking right into our unit which made us have to close our blinds on the sliding glass doors and then you felt like you were in a cave as that was the only outside light source for the living room. There was the constant drone of the two de-humidifiers running continuously (I had to dump the water out of the one in the front hallway twice a day and the one in the bedroom once a day). Lastly, there was the scarcity of places to eat within about four blocks of the Apt.

OK, now for the positive attributes of the place, it was reasonably priced, nicely decorated and clean, kitchen was small but adequate for two. Full size refrigerator (although no icemaker), garbage disposal and full size washer and dryer. Bed was fairly comfortable and the bathroom shower was very nice and large. The location was good in general and there was a bus stop right outside the front door with the metro station just about four blocks away.

So in conclusion I would say this Apt. was more or less OK., but only if there was no one staying upstairs at the same time your were there.
Owner's Response: Ah, the joys of living in a rowhouse in the city - yes, there are neighbors. I am sorry to hear you had a few issues during your long stay at our place, and wish you had given us a chance to address them while you were here. For instance, most guests say the dehumidifiers are amazing at keeping things comfortable - but you certainly didn't need to use them if they were a bother.

Since we saw your review, we have added another layer of curtains to the sliding door to provide more privacy, and installed a stronger kitchen exhaust fan upstairs, plus more carpeting. We've also reminded guests staying there to be respectful of the downstairs neighbors.

This is a mother-in-law's apartment, though - it is geared toward families on shorter visits who spend most of their time seeing the sights, and priced accordingly. We have more luxurious options for longer stays, and I hope you'll give one of them a try the next time you're in DC, Allan. I do appreciate your taking the time to post your review, and hope the changes we've made as a result make our place even better for future guests. - Deborah

Deborah de Young has done it again. We have stayed at her places before and this one was just as well appointed and comfortable as the others. Location is great, there are lots of high tech surprises in the condo, the outside deck is welcoming, and the bed could not be be more comfortable. We used the Waterfront Metro most often because it is closer to the condo than LaInfant.

Was as described and more. The unit came with lots of amenities such as laundry detergent, garbage bags, dishwasher tablets, etc. Apartment was very clean and comfortable. Close to the Metro and easy to get around. We really appreciated the travel guides that were there. We would recommend this to anyone looking for 1 bedroom! Thank you!!

Convenient location to everything

The apartment is very comfortable and spacious, and did provided us with a cool and cozy haven on return from busy days of site seeing. Washington was very warm when we were there and the air conditioning over performed. The owners obligingly came and adjusted it for us, it worked so well. The apartment is the basement of the house and so if there are people above, you do hear them walking around. We were not worried by this however. We also had a nephew and his fiancé stay for a weekend with us and found the day bed facility in the living room quite adequate and private enough. The kitchen is well appointed and the rooms clean and comfortable. The location is excellent for roaming to the Capitol, the Smithsonian museums and also to the White House and memorial buildings. The marina is only a block away and has a lively floating mexican restaurant and bar, which is worth a visit. The fresh fish market is also close by and a supermarket is only two blocks away. The metro is also a couple of blocks away, so it is also easy to go further afield. We enjoyed our stay, the area is quiet, safe and convenient.
