Photos and Description of the Southwest Waterfront vacation house rental

Comfortable, spacious pied-à-terre just:

-- 6 blocks from the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum,

-- 8 blocks to the Smithsonian Castle,

-- 1 block from Washington’s Southwest Waterfront, and

-- a15-minute walk to the Tidal Basin’s cherry blossom trees!

Or hop on the Metro at the L’Enfant Plaza subway hub – 4 blocks away – to get to Arlington Memorial Cemetery, the National Zoo, the White House or U.S. Capitol in minutes.

A new grocery store, drugstore, and other shops are four blocks away – and so is a Capital Bikeshare docking station, where you can rent a bike then drop it off wherever you’re going – or return one that you picked up from elsewhere.

Our daylight basement means plenty of light but the apartment stays cool, even in DC’s humid summers. The new kitchen is fully equipped. . . the new travertine+marble bathroom has a step-in shower. . . a spacious bedroom with a king-sized bed and and flat screen TVs in the LR and BR make this a haven after a hectic day.

A reserved parking space – a rarity in the city – opens other options for easily getting around town.

At dusk, listen for the ship’s horn as the Odyssey dinner cruise pulls out of the nearby marina. . . stay in and grill on the enclosed back patio (shared with fellow VRBO guests upstairs). . . stroll to DC’s floating fish market for the freshest seafood in town. . . book theater tickets for a memorable evening at the stunning Arena Stage showplace two blocks away. . . or head to nearby restaurants:

* Cantina Marina is a fun neighborhood watering hole and restaurant on the water where the Sequoia (once the presidential yacht) is docked

* Phillips Seafoood and other reliable favorites also line the waterfront

* The Mandarin Oriental Hotel (whose five-star elegance draws foreign dignitaries and VIPs) has a choice of restaurants

* A mile north, Gallery Place/Chinatown is one of Washington’s nightlife and dining destinations -- and where the Caps and Wizards play

A Supreme Court Chief Justice was the first owner of our house, and the neighborhood remains home to many long-time residents. While you’re here, why not join them in the conclusion that – with everything else to do in DC – there is no reason to waste time commuting!

Perfect vacation spot

My family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teenage boys) returned yesterday from this perfect vacation spot. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the accomodations, location and ease in coordinating the visit with Deborah. The unit is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need and along with information on where to find a grocery store, Metro stops, restaurants, etc. A parking space just steps from the front door was also key. I would stay here again and again and most likely will. Thanks Deborah for a great visit!

Convenient but cold and noisy

Location was good, apartment facilities were comfortable. Appreciated the new washer and dryer, plenty of linens and places to hang our things. However, noise from the apartment above came straight through the ceiling: footsteps, singing and chimpanzee impressions. The heat could not be controlled in the apartment, and was very chilly even when temp outside was moderate.

Perfect launching point for activities in DC

Description of property is accurate, location is fantastic for access to both subway and the Mall. Owner was great with communication.

We had five in our party (3 adults and 2 kids, 8 and 11) and it was a bit cramped, but we knew that going in and didn't mind. Nonetheless, understand that additional sleeping is in the commons area, so when our kids went to bed early we put them in the bedroom and moved them out when we went to bed. Six would be definitely too many for this site.

For us, this was a great location, clean, and close to everything. There is a grocery store and pharmacy near by as well. Highly recommended!

All the Conveniences of Home with an Even Better Location

Our family stayed several nights and this apartment was perfect for our stay! A block & a half to a Metro Stop, a block and a half to the Potomac, and a mere 10 minute walk to the mall. The flat was clean and bright, with everything one would need for a stay including coffee maker, soap & shampoo, and someone was kind enough to leave Smarttrip Cards for the Metro & Metrobus ready for us! The neighborhood was safe and quiet. It was perfect for us to hit the sights, walk back for lunch, and then head out for more. We had a great stay and would highly recommend it for a couple or for a small family like ours.

Wonderful Base For Tourism

My exchange student and I had a wonderful stay at this location. The unit was spacious, extremely well furnished and clean. The shower was especially pleasant, with a nicely tiled floor. It was the basement unit of a brickfaced multistoried townhouse, one of many in a row. Several of the appliances (stove/refrigerator) were a grade above what we thought we would see upon arrival. The area was interesting, a pleasant residential area six blocks south of the Mall that was clearly an attempt to recreate a community that had been traumatized by urban renewal 50 years ago. There was a nearby Safeway market and CVS. The Arena Theater is a 5 minute walk South. There were churches and schools in the immediate area and a upscale highrise next door; the area seems stable and diverse. Government office buidings are within two- three blocks to the North; there are several restaurants, Pizzerias, coffeeshops and breakfast bars to service the employees. There is a Metro station (L'Enfant) just to the north but we found it just as convenient to walk everywhere, as we spent most of our time around the Mall. The DC Waterfront is literally almost out the door to the right, with several seafood options. The unit also has many brochures and books on local tourism options.

Our only caveats are minor. I found it impossible to work the television in my bedroom, but that is only because I didn't take the time to recontact our gracious hostess, who was very helpful in all other matters. Instead, after a busy day, I just read, or watched it from the family room. In addition, as the heat was controlled by the homeowners upstairs, the unit was somewhat cool (It was February!) We made excellent use of the two electric spaceheaters, just making sure not to overload the circuits (do not use the microwave at the same time!)

Overall, I would highly recommend the unit and location for anyone who desires great accomodations near the heart of the city!
