About Don Tollefson

I started out as a high school teacher in 1968. After 4 years I stopped that nonsense (it was a great job for which I wasn't suited) and went to law school. I passed the bar in 1979 and became an attorney (another great job for which I wasn't suited). That same year started a construction company. All along the way I bought property (back in the beginning property was cheap). In 2008 I added the vacation rental business. I still don't know what I'm going to be when I grow up. My insight? 'Youth is wasted on the young!'

Why Don Tollefson chose Malibu

As a young man I never had much money (still don't). So even though property was cheap, I could only afford distress property and/or property in downtrodden areas. I mostly bought property in a nearby slum area called Venice (where I live to this day). I bought this particular Malibu vacation rental property as a distress property. It was in the Big Rock Mesa slide area. The slide area was a quarter mile section along the coast that was sliding aggressively toward Catalina Island. I gambled and it all worked out. Because the County stabilized the slide and everyone knows what happened in Venice. People tell me I was smart. But, I wasn't smart. I was lucky. My insight? If you have a choice between lucky and smart, pick lucky.

What makes this townhome unique

I'm 'unfamiliar places' and 'new things challenged.' Being thus 'challenged,' I'm aware of the frustrations that can accompany a vacation. So, I set things up so vacationers can 'hit the ground running.' My photos are unembellished. My video is unembellished. My booking process is dunce level simple. My follow up is compulsive every step of the way. I'm always accessible by phone, text or email. I provide a comprehensive printout for arrival. I've labeled light switches, fans, heaters and remote controls. I oversee cleaning. I oversee every turnover. I make certain everything is re-stocked, fully equipped and working. I refund security deposits promptly and make certain they clear. And I offer a 'repeat offender' discount for returning vacationers. My insight? It must be working because 25% of my vacationers are 'repeat offenders.'

Malibu.... Walls of Glass on the Sand

Just got back from a week at Walls of Glass on the Sand in Malibu and can't wait to go back and become a repeat offender. It is a lovely place to get away from the "real" world. We had a hard time leaving the Walls of Glass but the Getty is just 5 minutes away and a beautiful way to spend an afternoon. So we forced ourselves to leave. So many great views from so many different places in the house. Loved watching out for seals, dolphins and a few whales and learning about the tide. Enjoyed walking on the beach when the tide was low, bring water shoes. Helps when you're walking over the rocks. But my favorite thing about this place is the privacy. Very few people around. It felt like our own personal beach!!! Thanks Don, See you soon!!!!

Owner's Response: Congratulations Windy! Your mention of "privacy" is the first ever in a guest review. Big Rock Beach is simply not readily accessible by the public. So, there's seldom anyone on the beach except a local or an occasional dog walker. It always just astounded me at the privacy and seclusion that Big Rock Beach provides. Thanks, Don

Super vacation in Malibu

My wife, daughter and I just spent 7 days at the Walls of Glass in the sand. What a wonderful location! On the beach. Waves lapping close to the house at high tide. Fabulous sunrise and sunset both viewable from inside the house or from the deck. Centrally located in Malibu close to all amenities. The house itself is comfortable and clean with everything necessary. Don was incredibly responsive and immediately on top of the few minor issues we had. All in all it was a great week and we will return on a future holiday

Our second time but not our last!

We've stayed here twice - once in March and just came back yesterday from our second time. The sound of the ocean is still fresh in my memory! We love this place so much and we will definitely be back again soon.

Fantastic!!!

The description of the condo does not accurately describe it. It is so much more!!!! Time you come down the steps all you see is the ocean. Once you enter the condo, it is spacious and well decorated. The view of the ocean is spectacular!!!. The wall of glass just makes it. You can hear the ocean throughout the condo and at night laying in the master bedroom is unbelievable!!!. Also there is in fact 2 full baths as the half bath is now a full bath with a fantastic shower! Don, the owner was always available and replied very quickly to emails. If in Malibu, walls of glass is the perfect rental.

Owner's Response: Thank you Cathy for mentioning "the location is perfect!" I've done a lot of remodeling, upgrading, furnishing and planning over the years. But, I had absolutely nothing to do with picking that location. At the time of purchase it was the only beachfront property I could afford. It just happened to come with a great location. I didn't even realize the convenience of the location until my vacationers began mentioning it years later.

Wonderful rental home

We really had a wonderful time in your rental home!

The kids and my wife and me, we felt like being home from the very first minute.

Most of our breakfasts began with watching dolphins, pelicans, seals and sometimes even whales!

Fred and his friend visited us day by day and this was an experience that we will never forget!

We made a mixture of sightseeing and relaxing on the different beautiful beaches, so we saw a lot of interesting places and people and had a lot of fun.

We plan to visit you again one time, but I suppose that it will need some years …
