Villa Aurora - Peaceful and secluded
Review Submitted: September 15, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
I travelled to Kefalonia in August of this year with my wife, infant daughter (2), my parents and my father in-law. We had a great time and would recommend the villa.
On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the scale and layout of the villa. Everything was clean, bright, cool and modern is style - just as the photos would suggest.
We had a couple of issues with the pool for the first few days, we were told to leave the hose in to keep it filled and that seemed to help.
One thing to mention before I carry on, there was a LOT of wasps. Each day I would clean 50+ out of the pool and they were constantly around the pool area. Honey traps hung from the trees did seem to help, and I got used to them after a while, but they're not for everyone. Certainly anyone who has a known allergy or reaction to stings should be wary - though that's not just this villa, that's most of this area in our experience, this year at least.
As the details suggest it is about a 20 minute walk from the village, though none of my party wanted to attempt that in the dark, so we drove everywhere at night. Unless you're going to the beach or eating at one of the tavernas, there's not much to see in Katelios - which I quite liked as it really is calm and initimate. All the tavernas did nice food - Cpt Jerrys producing some of the nicest sea bass I've ever had. Persa's on the road out of Katelios seems like it's seen brighter days and needs a little TLC, but nevertheless produced a Kleftiko that goes on my top 10 meals of all time - delicious!
We ate out and visited Skala quite regularly for access to the butchers, supermarket and shops. It takes about 10-15 minutes by car and is a nice resort, again relatively quiet and subdued with a nice, sensible atmosphere in the evenings. Scandinavia Tavern (not in the least scandinavian) was a favourite of ours and we ate there a few times - friendly staff, and great Meze.
I'd say you'ld want a car for your stay here if you want to get out and about, we went to Fiskardo, catching Mirtos and Assos on the way back on a trip that took a full day. Fiskardo was nice, but we had to get out of there as soon as the boat trip landed and you couldn't move on the harbour.
Back to the villa then... it's in a lovely, peaceful location with no traffic, no passers by, and no noise from anything that doesn't have at least 6 legs. Would I go again? Perhaps out of season when there's less wasps as Kefalonia is a stunning island.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday and enjoyed Kefalonia.
