This property is not as described, & I was cheated 3 times by the owner. This should tell you all you need to know if you are considering renting here, but if you are in need of details, please read on.
The house was listed as sleeping 8, with 2.5 bathrooms. My family was there for 15 days, & didn't always use all beds, but we had weekend guests, so that was a consideration when booking. There were beds for only 6. The futon would not sleep 2 adults, and the extra mattress did not exist. There are not 2.5 bathrooms, only 2. I inquired about this, & the description has since been changed. The price of rentals is calculated in part on the # of beds/baths. If $20 nightly is a fair estimate of the value of a 1/2 bath, then I was overcharged $300. That's the 1st rip-off.
The 2nd is a gray area. We ended up leaving a day early, which I learned just as we checked in. I gave 2 weeks notice, but the owner didn't refund the final night payment. Since our stay was lengthy & pricy, that would have been a nice courtesy.
The last cheat was the real capper. In order to explain it, I must return to the inadequacies of the cabin. I accept that 2nd homes are often furnished with hand-me-downs, but I would expect an upgrade when entering the rental market. The other review of this property mentioned that the linens should be replaced. Agreed. The sheets for the single bed were so thin as to be transparent, & were not even a matched set. A set of upstairs sheets had a large hole. The dish towels were truly ratty. This could be remedied with a small outlay of cash, so it really not acceptable. There were not enough dishes. You should understand that Hartstine is very remote. Dining out is not an option, so you will be cooking all your meals there. I helped out by contributing a set of dishes, serving dishes, & dish towels. The owner then failed to return my security deposit because I had left items in the home! She claimed it was a great deal of work to "dispose" of them. I would have thought my cleaning fee would have covered that, but the rudeness is what really galls. To receive a gift, complain about it, reveal that you disposed of it, then charge the giver is horrible behavior. I paid several hundred more than I should have, not even counting the value of my unappreciated gifts.
Lastly, few items worked. TV, CD player, garbage disposal are nonfunctioning. Bad musty smell in basement. We had to make our own beds and clean up many dead bugs upon arrival.
We stayed for a week visiting family in the area with our dog and 3 teenagers. I loved unpugging my children for the time that we were there. The Island has plenty to do for older kids; swimming, tennis, biking, tons of beach, canoing.....
Thank you for sharing the games and books. Every night was games night then everyone read until we collapsed.
The kitchen is the best stocked of any home I have ever rented. The owners also kept the bathroom and basic medicine avalable, thank you, it is not a quick trip to the store.
This is not a fancy place. It's a family home. Reasonable price. And we were very comfortable here. With proper expectations anyone can enjoy themselves completely. The deck is cozy & the basement is filled with outdoor equipment and tons of space for the kids to play. If I could change anything I would replace the beds & linens.
We recommend The Bakery on Pickering & renting canoes.
