Big Sur House Rental Photos and Description

The Dome House….Jewel in the Forest

37732 Palo Colorado Rd

Carmel, California 93923

I hope that you have a wonderful experience staying in the

Dome House at the “Jewel in the Forest”.

37732 Palo Colorado Rd Carmel CA 93923

We are located exactly halfway between Carmel & Big Sur just 2 miles off Hwy 1.

The lovely 2 mile drive on Palo Colorado is a bit windy but it is paved.

If you see the 2 mile marker you may have just passed the driveway.

Pull into the driveway and turn to the right and pull in front of the Dome House to park .

Check in time is 4PM or later and check out is by 11AM

If I am not here when you arrive please pull into the parking area and park in the driveway up near the Dome House. Go upstairs to your home away from home. If the door is locked the key will be in the lockbox to the left of the door. I will send you the before you arrive.

*You might want to pick up some groceries on the way over because we’re about 20 min from any shopping. Carmel or Monterey is good for picking up supplies on the way. There is a Safeway on Rio Rd in Carmel and this is the closest grocery store from the North. If you’re coming up Hwy 1 from the South you can stop in Big Sur but you’ll pay a lot more and the stores are just small general stores.

*We do supply some firewood for the wood stove but if you bring some of your own please make sure that it’s natural wood and not treated with wax or other substance. If it lists on the packaging “not for indoor fireplaces” that is the wrong kind. They do carry just the natural wood as well and the other is dangerous and toxic for indoor use.

Page 2- The Dome House Check In

*In case I am not here to welcome you personally you will find the keys to the Dome House in the lock box to the left of the door. The combination for you is 1206. If it is dark outside you’ll find a little flashlight hanging on a hook just above the lock box. There are 2 keys, one for the upper lock and one for the lower. When going in and out on your excursions you may use either or both of these.

*You’ll find bedding for the full size bed futon in the living room in the trunk on your left as you enter the house. The futon opens in one swoop from the front.

*The other futon (single bed) is located behind the book case and the linens for it are on a shelf next to it and in the drawer underneath.

*The master bedroom is upstairs and you’ll find everything you need up there…bed made and towels, bath salts, soap.

*The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and baking. We provide enough coffee for 2 days …

but the food is up to you of course.

*We provide some drinking water in a dispenser….please use bottled water for drinking.

*The wood stove is ready to go….you’ll find a lighter provided or a match. Be sure to close the door on wood stove when fire is lit. Please don’t make a huge raging fire but allow the flames to get to a good medium and continue to feed the fire when needed. When you go to bed be sure to close the vents on the wood stove door to about a quarter opening so that it will burn more slowly and stay warmer most of the night. You’ll find some wood near the stove and more in the brown shed in the driveway as well as kindling and fire starters. Please leave the flute on the pipe as is…don’t try to change it.

*To make your own fire: scrunch up some newspaper sheets and make a pile in the middle of the fireplace. Place the lightweight pieces of wood on top of this like a tent or teepee; put a few more scrunched pieces of paper (3-4) on top of that and then a couple of slightly heavier pieces of wood on top of that. You’re ready to light the paper and get your fire going. If you like you can take a small piece of a fire starter and place it underneath a log. Once it starts burning well, add another piece of wood to keep it going. At first keep the vents open all the way and after a while close them to about halfway.

*When leaving the house on an excursion please don’t leave with a raging fire going. If you do have a little fire going just close the vents all the way on the wood stove door tight.

*There will be no campfires for the summer due to a very dry winter and high fire hazard.

**** We respectfully ask you to not smoke anywhere in the house. The best place to smoke is in the parking lot area away from any house. Do not toss cigarette butts….please put them out completely in ash tray.

*NO SMOKING in the house and if you smoke outside please be sure to fully put out your cigarette in ash trays. Be VERY conscious of fire safety please!

Page 3 Dome House Check in

*Please refrain from moving furniture around as it scrapes and ruins our lovely seasoned wood floors.

*When you leave the house please try to remember not to leave many lights on in the house as we want to be energy efficient

*There is a porch light switch to the left of the front door so be sure to turn that on if you plan to be back after dark.

*Remotes for the flatscreen TV are on the coffee table and provide Netflix, Hulu etc. One of them is for power and volume and the smaller one lets you access and choose channels and options.

*I have supplied art materials for painting and journals should you feel inspired to express yourself this way. They are located on the table next to the front door. The materials located near my paintings and floor easel are my art supplies so please don’t use those.

*If you need to clean a spill or any other messes you’ll find some cleaning materials under the kitchen sink.

*The number of guests agreed to on your contract is the number expected. Please do not invite more guests to stay here without the prior permission of the owner, Sofanya White.

You may use the house land line in the art gallery if you need to make a U.S. call.

We do not offer internet unless it is urgent and then only for a few minutes due to the very low bandwidth in this area. You will have the wonderful opportunity to really enjoy a relaxing vacation “unplugged”! If you do need to use internet for an extended time you may want to go to the lovely Rocky Pt Restaurant only 2 miles from here.

*Carabella’s Theatre and Sofanya’s Gallery:

This is a public area for all guests where you’ll find a stage area, comfy chairs to sit and relax, a BBQ and more art supplies. Feel free to spend time in this area enjoying the trees, reading, and sometimes we are allowed to have a pitfire in the evening.

*Sofanya’s Gallery: This is located on the garden level of the Dome House. The door is usually open and you can turn on lights and check out my art. There are also paintings in the house. Most of the art is also available in high quality reproductions if you’re interested. I also do something I call “Essence Portraits” which take only about 1-2 hrs. You can see samples in there or go online to www.sofanya.com for more info. Let me know if you’d like to make an appt.

*You’ll find a Guest Book on wooden podium near the art supplies.

Please feel free to write any comments and feedback in order to help me make things even better for your next visit as well as for other guests!

I appreciate any and all feedback and I love finding guest comments.

I’m often on property either painting in my studio or gallery or you may find me by knocking on the door inside the art gallery located on the ground level in front of the Dome House.

Have a wonderful visit and please let me know if there’s anything you need!

Warmly….Sofanya

About Sofanya White Property

I am an artist so Blessed to live and work in this paradise forest in between Big Sur and Carmel. I'm inspired by the reality that each of us are nature and not separate from it. This is the basis of my work. People often ask me what kind of art I make and my response is that 'Life is the Art'! I work in many mediums including painting, redwood carvings, mixed media and of course the Essence Portraits I create for people have been a profound exploration into the hologram of time and space of a person's soul. I love the discovery of art as a medium for the universe of knowledge to come through the paintings and sculpture. I enjoy welcoming people from all over the world into my gallery & studio here on the 'Jewel in the Forest' property. We also have a small area I call 'Carabella's Theatre' where we hold seasonal gatherings, weddings, workshops etc. ?Feel free to check out my website or Sofanya on Facebook.

Sofanya White Property purchased this house in 1996

Why Sofanya White Property chose Big Sur

I remember the day I was drawn here....it was as if everyone I encountered had a message for me. Since the moment I got here I've felt it to be my true home. I used to drive thru Big Sur on my way to LA on art business and this time I visited a shop that was carrying my wearable art at the time and the clerk in there said 'Sofanya you should check this place out....it's perfect for you!' I called to make an appt to see the house the next morning. The moment I turned onto this road to my house I recognized it as the place I belonged on the planet. When I drove into the driveway to the dome house my gaze was filled with a beautiful large young woman with long golden hair nursing her baby who was proportionally as large and gorgeous as she....it was like a bigger than life vision of nurturing. She showed me upstairs to the dome house. When I entered I had a strong sense that I made it home! I rented for a year and a half knowing that someday I must buy this property so that I would never have to leave. Miracles took place so that I could manifest that dream and here I am almost 17 yrs later. In that time we've had a theatre in the round in the lower dome level, art shows, concerts, workshops, community gatherings. Over time I found out that long before the dome was built the property was called 'Hoffman's Camp' owned by Carabel & Lou Hoffman. They used to have Sunday dinners for the guests cooked by Carabel...people loved staying here and couldn't wait to come back. I have photos from that era and now I once again bring to life the long history of welcoming new friends to this beautiful magical place on earth.

What makes this house unique

Peace in beautiful nature while being less than 20 minutes to countless fun activities in Carmel, Big Sur, Monterey, Pacific Grove and on and on!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is kind of a long review but I wanted to post excerpts from it because it warmed my heart to read this in our guest book and really says everything I want to share with you. It comes from a lovely woman who stayed with her husband for their 11th Anniversary...

"We are in love with this world, this home, with all of the love and beauty throughout the house. Art, music, woods, lighting, furniture and seating to explore, luxuriate in. Little gifts to tell us to wake up to the moment. Warm, cool, green, crisp, peaceful, yum." ....and on another day....

"When we walked into the Dome House my anxiety left immediately. Ther is not an ugly vista in sight aat this enchanted place. It is even more spacious than it looks in the pictures. It is a real house build of all wood with stained glass and windows all around. Best dish washing experience I've had. The love nest upstairs has 4 skylights and you see majestic trees and even stars from them. Even ifyou are not an "artist" you can't deny self expression here. There are paints, pencils, musical instruments, and even a theatre outside. Sofanya is someone you will want to meet. She is divine and greeted us with a card wishing us a happy anniversary, a bottleof wine and freshly picked blackberries from this very land (yummy). You could bring a family, a group of friends, or have a romantic vacation with your partner here. I can't recommend it enough!"

I really look forward to another visit from them.

It really is a jewel in the forest

We had a wonderful stay in the Calla Lily cottage. It was well-equipped, and the wood stove kept us cozy and warm. It was great being off the grid for a couple days.

Sofanya was a welcoming host, and gave us a little tour of the property before we left.

Zen holiday retreat

  • 5 of 5
Thank you sofyana for an amazing peaceful retreat for our holiday. The house is zen, rustic yet glam with high end touches from beautiful sheets to claw foot tubs with aromatic bath crystals. It was the most unique place we have stayed and the house has the most amazing zen quality. Bring your sleep mask for early morning sun due to skylights. Great for dogs but not toddlers or elders due to the stairs and open areas. Probably best for one couple and a friend or teenager versus 2 couple due to the layout

The painting canvas and art supplies made for a unique vrbo and incredible night with a post bathtub aromatic lavender soak!

Happy holidays and cheer with your next vrbo rental! Enjoy the dome!

Looking forward to a return stay.

Amazing spot

  • 5 of 5
We love the dome house! This is a great place to check out if you like something a bit different. The road up to the house is incredible in and of itself. My girlfriend and I came up here to have a quiet new years and relax, it was a great experience. Sofanya is a wonderful and caring host and the property is beautiful, it has a great energy. During the day you are so close to lots of great hikes, and interesting things to see at night we'd build a fire, open a bottle of wine and just enjoy the tranquility. Best of all, we were able to bring out dog with us which we always appreciate. We even got engaged while we were staying at the dome house. Anyway, if you like places which are a bit more unique this is a great choice.

Special Sanctuary

  • 5 of 5
I have had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Jewel in the Forest before at the Calla Lilly Cottage. For my second visit, I stayed at the Dome House. My stay at the Dome House what exactly what I was expecting: inviting, magical, peaceful, restorative. What a treat! The pictures do not do this home justice...the place is filled with the most beautiful art by the owner, Sofanya. Everywhere you look there are reminders of not only how powerful and inspiring of an artist she is, but also of how special this home is surrounded by the forest and nature. As always, Sofanya was incredibly accommodating and welcoming. The home was extremely cozy and came filled with all the amenities we needed to have a lovely time. Special touches like blank canvases/paint/brushes, chocolates, individually wrapped soaps, an already-built fire in the wood stove all served to remind me how much Sofanya is invested in ensuring every visitor leaves knowing what a special sanctuary she has built at the Jewel in the Forest. I can't wait to visit again!!

I feel like you and I connected and became Friends right away the first visit....I loved that we got to paint together ....and your painting is amazing! (I would love to see the finished piece sometime.) It was even more special that you celebrated your Birthday here with dear Friends...such great people!.....I'm honored that you would choose this amazing place to enjoy. I hope that you won't wait too long to come back again....sending lots of Love and wishes for a most Blessed year!

Romantic, Inspiring & Heart opening

Romantic, Inspiring & Heart opening

What I wanted was a place of peace, romance and inspiration. The Jewel in the Forest is that and so much more. I was delighted with the house and surroundings. So magnificent! It is a large space but very easy to nest in and so comfortable. I didn't want to leave. I cooked lovely meals, sat outside and drank wine by huge redwoods, made lovely warm fires and soaked in a magnificent hot tub. This is a place I will definitely return again and again. Also was delighted to be surrounded by art. Sofanya the owner is a delight as well as an amazing artist and we shared some meaningful time together also.

Our experience in The Dome House

  • 4 of 5
We were invited to a Big Sur getaway with some friends on Labor Day weekend and jumped at the chance to stay at The Dome House. We didn't know what to expect, but we couldn't wait for a new Big Sur adventure. If you're not looking for 5 star amenities and prefer a "glamping" sort of vibe, this is the place for you. Sofanya was more than accommodating and was present on the property the entire weekend. She even started a lovely fire for us every night and shared many wonderful stories with us. The location itself was my favorite part- the 2 mile drive down the road and into the forest was beyond breathtaking...it made me feel like I was truly on vacation and away from the hustle and bustle of the city that we had just came from. While the house is suited for probably no more than 5-6 people, it's calming vibe would make this place ideal for the perfect weekend retreat for friends and couples.

Owner's Response: Thank you Danielle! I so enjoyed meeting you and the others..... a very lively and fun group and it was clear that everyone enjoyed being on this lovely property in nature. I doubt most people expect the "amenities" of a 5 star hotel such as room service, wake up calls, dry cleaning etc because this isn't a hotel but a vacation rental where you are welcome to make yourself at home. It was great that you guys did that so well! Gratefully, Sofanya
