Better off Elsewhere
Submitted: January 7, 2013
Stayed: December 2012
I want to give a fair WARNING about this listing:
We were a family of 8, 7 adults and 1 child, we stayed at the house for a week. The house is in a good location and is spacious enough but if you would like a comfortable hassle-free stay with no nickeling and diming, look elsewhere.
1. There was a roach problem. We found a few dead roaches (I think the house had been treated with poison) during the week.
2. The kitchen is severely outdated and the dishes were a little grimey.
3. My sister and brother-in-law found mouse droppings in their den closet.
4. Even though there is a cleaning fee, the landlord will find a way to dip into your deposit so BEWARE . We are very clean but the landlord decided to take a portion out of the deposit for some moved around chairs, dishes we had to leave in the sink after completely filling up the dishwasher, and an open window. Which begs the question, why is there a cleaning fee?
5. There will only be enough hot water for exactly 1.5 showers. So alleging that the house can hold 8 people comfortably is somewhat misleading.
Jimmy was nice on the phone but at the end of the day considering the house's faults, he treated us unfairly. James Island is great so find another house in this area.
Owner's Response: Ovner Introduction: Prior to this Guest, we had 10 stays. Each provided feedback direcly to us and all feedback was very positive. The following is a response to this Guest’s specific issues:
1. "There was a roach problem. We found a few dead roaches (I think the house had been treated with poison) during the week."
Owner Response: When I inspected the house after the stay, I found an uncovered bowl of sugar and dirty dishes on the kitchen counters. We have a contract with Terminix for pest control treatment and treatment occurs throughout the year. The treatment is effective.
2. "The kitchen is severely outdated and the dishes were a little grimey." Owner Response: Our VRBO site has photos of the house and inlcudes a kitchen/dining shot.
3. "My sister and brother-in-law found mouse droppings in their den closet." Owner Response: The den has a locked “owner’s closet”; so, I’m not sure where this refers.
4. "We are very clean but the landlord decided to take a portion out of the deposit for some moved around chairs, dishes we had to leave in the sink after completely filling up the dishwasher, and an open window." Owner Response: The rental agreement requires “Daily cleaning of the kitchen”. Also, a large recliner was moved from the den to the living room by the Guest. In order to return this large recliner, I had to take it apart and put it back together in order to move it by myself. Finally, we had 11 stays last year including this one. All Guests, except this one, received a full refund.
5. "There will only be enough hot water for exactly 1.5 showers."
Owner Response: The department of energy provides guidelines for sizing residential hot water use. The guides indicate 10 gallons of hot water is normal use for a shower. The house has 2 showers and an 80 gallon water heater. We have not received complaints from other Guests with similar or larger parties. In addition, one of the co-owners has stayed at this house with similar size parties mulitple times and has not had a hot water shortage.
Owner’s final comment: We are sorry these renters were not satisfied. The owners go the extra mile to make sure the property provides Guests with a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
