About Mark Darley

We have lived in Marin County for 30 years and had been looking for a weekend property in Inverness for 7 years when we found this classic cabin known locally as 'Wee Housie'. I am an architectural photographer, and my wife an arts educator, so we very carefully maintained the original character of the cabin when we restored it. We have been sailing and hiking in and around Inverness and have come to love it. Inverness is on the shore of Tomales Bay, one of the most protected and pristine bays on the entire west coast of California. It reminds me, a transplanted Brit, of the best of the coastal landscape I grew up with, and my wife and children, Bay Area natives are deeply attached to it as well.

Mark Darley purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Mark Darley chose Inverness

This was a rare opportunity to purchase a uniquely charming original cabin in Inverness with a sunny garden. When we discovered it, we were struck by the fact that in 7 years of searching we had not seen any other small house in Inverness that was as original as this one, and with such a lovely garden on the mesa above Tomales Bay, just a short walk to the waters edge and village center. It is a very peaceful, romantic and rustic retreat to unplug from modern life.

What makes this cottage unique

This cabin is uniquely 'old Inverness', an authentic but comfortable and charming California cabin, built inside and out of old growth redwood. Imagine settling into the sofa in front of an open fire in the evening in a room that is exactly as it was in 1917. Settle into a slower and simpler life, surrounded by nature.

Charming & Whimsical & Wonderful

Charming & Whimsical & Wonderful

There was simply no better place to spend the July 4th weekend than Wee Housie. The minute we walked in we felt completely welcome and at home, taking our time to wander around every corner of the house exploring the beautiful vignettes created by the owners. Every detail was simply delightful, and very thoughtful.
Each day when we were out and about we found reasons to return to the house early. Using the sleeping porch as our personal reading room, we spent several afternoons with the windows flung open, feet dangling out, reading books. And sitting on the porch rocking chairs, wine in hand, watching the fog descend down the hill is something we could get very used to.
We can't recommend Wee Housie enough. We'll be back.

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5
Wee Housie, as the owners call her, is the perfect name for this cottage. It is a very sweet little house tucked behind a gate and surrounded by trees and wild gardens. Inside it is just as it is shown in the pictures, only even more charming. It is quiet, clean and the bed is very comfortable. The second bedroom is like a sun porch or small library that has doors for some privacy. There is a built-in daybed on either side of the room to accommodate additional guests. We used our bottled water for drinking as the water from the faucet didn't taste great. The cottage is in a fantastic location. It is walking distance to a market and 2 restaurants (we had breakfast at the Blackbird which was delightful). It is a very short drive to the town of Point Reyes Station (where there is a bookstore, restaurants and much more) and the Bear Valley Visitors Center (the starting point for some great hikes). Thank you Mark for your hospitality. My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay. I'd love to return with my two teenage boys some day soon!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great review. It sounds like you and your family made great use of Wee Housie and Point Reyes. We have addressed the water issue by changing the filter which was the problem. Actually the Inverness water straight from the tap is some of the purest spring water in the country. No filtering really necessary!

Utterly lovely

  • 5 of 5
Utterly lovely; no bad bedspreads or unnecessary plug-in devices and plenty of British charm. The bed was excellent as well. Do walk down to Saltwater Restaurant for lunch or dinner. You will not be disappointed.

More Lovely Than One Could Imagine

For the peace and proximity to fantastic hikes, this cabin was worth every penny. The home is so well appointed. It was a pleasure to be surrounded by the beauty of the natural world while ensconced by the art and objects of a tasteful and charming abode.

Lovely Retreat

  • 5 of 5
This historic cabin manages to be both comfortable and completely charming. While compact, it is well equipped for cooking, lounging, and exploring. The photos are accurate, showing its understated charm. We found the cabin to be very clean, with a fire laid for us and plenty of wood. the bed was very comfortable, the furnace and hot water more than adequate for winter use, and we were happy to have laundry facilities on site. Secluded from the neighbors, the cabin is quiet. We especially enjoyed the garden view and sitting by the fire in the evening. All the necessities are here, including wifi, but uncluttered by too many electronics or too many things. We had a blissfully peaceful few days. We hope to return and bring our dog next time. It's easy to get to the parks and a short drive to the stores in Point Reyes Station. It's a perfect spot to slow down and enjoy one's surroundings. We wished we had booked for a longer stay. The owner made the arrangements easy and our deposit was returned promptly. Thanks, Mark, for a delightful stay.

A Gem of a Cottage

  • 5 of 5
The two of us, along with our mellow basset hound, enjoyed two wonderful nights at this utterly charming cottage in Inverness. The photos convey exactly what you get - a cozy, comfortable cottage surrounded by an English-inspired garden. Our host, Mark, was great, offering wonderful recommendations to eat nearby and sending advance instructions on the home which were very clear. There was even a perfectly built stack of logs and kindling in the fireplace, so we only needed to strike a match our first night. The bed is very comfortable, the home is beautifully kept and clean, and the location is perfect for nearby jaunts to Pt. Reyes. The only downside was that we had booked just two nights - we didn't want to leave! We definitely plan to be back - thank you, Mark, for your gracious hospitality.
