DO YOU WANT A BEACH IN YOUR BACKYARD? BAYFRONT!

Grand Marais Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Waterfront/beachfront property with a fireplace. 3 bedroom, 1 bath

BOOKINGS ARE NOW BEING TAKEN FOR SUMMER/FALL OF 2014. Bookings for 2015 will not be accepted until MARCH 1, 2015 (Sorry, no exceptions to this policy).

Bookings from from September 7, 2014, onwards are a 2 night minimum until the Bay Cabin closes for winter on November 3, 2015.

An original log cabin inside, this property is on the bay in Grand Marais, Michigan. The Bay Cabin is a small 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom cabin with a study. It has a beach in the backyard, as it is fronting onto the bay in Grand Marais. A few yards short of the beach is the firepit where you can relax and watch fireworks on July 4 or just enjoy the tranquility of the water. The Bay Cabin also has a large deck for relaxing or dining while taking advantage of the great views. Behind the property a few hundred feet is the Lake Superior shore front.

Inside the Bay Cabin you will find a fully equipped kitchen, soft and comfortable bed and bath linen and cable TV. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with a new 3 inch memory foam topper and a view of the bay. The second bedroom has a full size bed. The third bedroom has bunk beds and the study has a twin bed. You will also find a lovely granite gas fireplace to warm your toes in the living room when there is a chill in the air.

The Bay Cabin was originally built in 1936 as a traditional full log cabin. Sometime later it was sided on the outside for additional insulation, but the inside remains true whole logs. The floors are lovely local hardwood with soft rugs placed in strategic spots. A soft leather couch and rocking chairs with ottomans completes the log cabin decor.

Outside there is a large deck with reclining chairs and ottomans, and a dining table. Under the side porch we have placed a wood picnic bench for outside dining on a hot sunny summer day or for when it is raining. For relaxing, with a warm beverage or a cocktail, use the deck chairs or the Bay Cabin's Adirondack chairs down at the firepit and beach. There is also a charcoal grill available for your use.

The Bay Cabin's private beach area 122 feet on the water's edge and 118 feet at the bank. It runs from the pine trees on the east side of the property. This beach is perfect for swimming, paddling, boating from, or even for pulling your sea plane into. It is also a wonderful place to sit at the edge of the water and enjoy an evening cocktail or a morning coffee. If you would like a long beach walk, just head to the open beach on the north side of the Bay Cabin by the beach accesses at either end of the road.

The Bay Cabin is about 600 feet from the center of town, playground, markets, stores, galleries, restaurants and bars. Go the other way 500 feet and you'll be at the lighthouse. Less than two miles away by road is Sable Falls and Sable Dunes, a shorter distance away if you walk the beach. Sable Lake, the Log Slide and Pictured Rocks are a little further on by road.

Come stay at the Bay Cabin and enjoy the experience of having your own waterfront cabin for a while.

Directions:

1. Coming into town on H-77 continue through the center of town (bank on right, hardware to the left) heading toward Lake Superior, continue past the Dune Saloon then down the hill, the road will fork so go right onto Coast Guard Point Road and continue past the marina and past the land on the right with the old large boats on it, you will then go past a fenced property and the Bay Cabin is the next house on the right hand side of the road.

2. From H-58 past Sable Dunes and Sable falls entrance continue into town, turn left when you hit the main street (Dune Saloon on your left), continue down the hill, the road will fork so go right on Coast Guard Point Road and continue past the marina and past the land on the right with the old large boats on it, you will then go past a fenced property and the Bay Cabin is the next house on the right hand side of the road.

INTERNET: No WiFi in the Bay Cabin. Free WiFi internet available at various places around town, including (subject to change without notice) at the Diner and at the Grand Marais Outfitters in town.

Occupancy comfort guide:

Good base for area

  • 4 of 5
As described this cabin was very small. We did have 8 people there for one night, but it would have been quite difficult for more nights. We ate outside on the deck, which is a fabulous addition.
I was sorry to see that the photos of the water front are quite deceptive. They imply a long stretch of open beach either side of the property but thats definitely not the case. There are houses on both sides, on quite a busy road and quite close to the actual road. The house was kind of separated from neighbors by trees but one can easily hear whats going on and watch the neighbors to the north quite easily.
The beach on Superior is beautiful, easy to get away from people.
Both the diner and the newer bay front restaurant were great for drop ins, we didnt eat dinner at either. Dinner was had at the Dune Saloon and it was very good.
Grocery shopping was very bad there, we stocked up in Munising. To my surprise fresh fish was very difficult to find. There was a local fisherman who had a store just south of the cabin, but he opened sporadically. We did get some fish there and it was delicious.
The cabin was spotless, the hot water was endless it seemed, no small feat when we were there wiith two teen girls.
I would have loved a gas grill, we did cook on the fire, but its not an easy task for a quick meal.
Some boating equipment would have been great, a kayak or canoe. They were very expensive to rent. its something we would have made a lot of use of.
The Upper Penninsula was beautiful. The walk from the Log Slide to the Au Train lighthouse was a wonderful walk, so quiet and just gorgeous views of the lake and dunes along the way.

Owner's Response: This guest stayed at the Bay Cabin when the Music Festival was on, which is probably the busiest and noisiest time of year in Grand Marais. Every place would be booked and almost every summer resident would be in the area. Regarding the size of the cabin, the Bay Cabin is advertised for up to 6 people because of its small size - see the guest guide at the end of the description. As for the waterfront and beach, the photos show the view and not the boundaries of the property's beach available to for walking and use, so please do not mix the two concepts - each photo has a description tag. Other than the water table being higher this year due to the big winter snow therein lessening the distance between the bank and the water the photos are accurate. When you are at the Bay Cabin you have the use of a beach 122 feet along the water, and 118 on the raised bank. The Bay Cabin's beach is one of the longest private beaches on the north side of the bay. Each waterfront owner owns down to the high water mark from their properties so please do not walk on the neighbor properties. If guests walk outside the Bay Cabin property a neighbor can ask you to leave or make you walk in the water. If you would like a long beach to walk please go to beach on the open Lake Superior waterfront to the north of the Cabin - access is from either end of the road.
From the Bay Cabin has a vacant block on each side. The next house to west is behind trees more than 200 feet away. To the east there is a small house about 60 feet from the Bay Cabin with some large pines between the firepit and that house. The house directly across the road is 200+ feet back from the road, and there is a house diagonally across the road about 60-80 feet away. When we stay we have seen very little activity at the neighbors' cabins.
In summer, and particularly for Music Festival weekend and July 4, you will certainly get more than the usual number of cars and people per day who drive or walk down the road to the lighthouse area or into town and you will likely have windows open if it is warm so you might hear some noise.
Canoes and kayaks, bicycles and ATVs can be rented in town at the Grand Marais Outfitters shop.

Owner's Response: Thank you kindly for your review. We agree that the shower is a little small, and we do have a larger corner glass shower unit waiting to be installed. We tried to install it for this summer season but we couldn't find a contractor who could install it in time. We are hoping to have it done in fall of 2014 or spring 2015 (in time for your visit next year??). We really appreciate you choosing to stay at the Bay Cabin.

The perfect little getaway

  • 5 of 5
This is the perfect place if you are looking for a quiet getaway in the UP. The cabin is small, but HEY! It's a cabin! It is comfortable, clean, and has everything you need. The location is great - right on the bay with access to the beach on the Big Lake less than a mile away in either direction. I think the pictures are very accurate in reflecting the nature of the cabin. Georgina, the caretaker, is a wonderful lady who I could have talked to for hours.

Grand Marais is a cute little town with a great tavern / restaurant (try the pizza!), groceries, and a nice jumping off point for the local national parks. The people are extremely friendly and helpful.

This is NOT the place for you if you are looking for a posh, swanky vacation - go to Florida. It is perfect if you want to have a comfortable, relaxing UP experience where you can catch your breath and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wonderful people.

Bayfront cottage

  • 4 of 5
This is a nice cottage on the bay in Grand Marais. Nice beach, but there are docks along the beach making it difficult for beachwalking. The cottage was very clean and was stocked with everything most families would need for a comfortable stay. The one thing that bothered us , as a family, was the foldable door that was on the bathroom. It wouldn't close completely, which we found uncomfortable. Other than that , the cottage is close to town and many great family activities. And the townspeople are very friendly and welcoming. Our family has four adults and this cozy cottage was more than adequate for our needs.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Yes, the bay beaches on Coast Guard Point are definitely not for long beach walks. The owners on our side of the bay own down to the high water mark, and the State owns from the high water mark to the water but owners have exclusive usage of that area too by law, so walking outside our portion of the beach would mean you are walking on other peoples' properties and they could kick you off or make you stay in the water. The Bay Cabin beach goes from the pine trees on the east to about 50' from the lattice fence corner on west, meaning it has one of the biggest private beach areas along our side of the bay. The size, however, is more for relaxing, playing, swimming and boating, or maybe for parking your sea plane (which someone did recently). Beach walking is best done on the beaches (Agate Beach & Woodland Park Beach) on the north side of of Coast Guard Point where you can walk for miles with the beaches wide and open and free of docks. You can get to these beaches easily from either end of our road. I always recommend a beach walk west until you get to a little water flowing into Lake Superior (Grand Sable River), then turn left and walk up the stairs next to Sable Falls waterfall, then you can either go along the road back into town or retrace your steps along the beach. We agree with your opinion on the bathroom door and we sometimes have to manipulate it to get it to close fully. Unfortunately it came with cabin when we bought it and although we've done quite a portion of the renovations we haven't yet replaced that item. Please be aware that we are planning on replacing the folding bathroom door with a barn door in the future (hopefully in 2014). Keep an eye out for a new large deck sometime in the near future too. Thanks again for your review, and we are glad you enjoyed your stay.

4th of July at Beach Cabin

  • 5 of 5
The Bay Cabin was wonderful. The cabin was clean and cozy. The kitchen was well equipped and we had plenty of everything. The fireworks from the private beach were beautiful. Our kids could not get over having their own beach right in the backyard. We certainly lucked out weather wise. There was a south breeze that kept us comfortable all week and kept the bugs down. We would recommend Bay Cabin wholeheartedly!

Situated in the charming town of Grand Marais, Michigan, this beachfront/bayfront property (The Bay Cabin) is approximately 500 feet from town and about 500 feet from the lighthouse on the point. 200 feet behind the property is the Lake Superior shore, a favorite for rock collectors. Sable Dunes and Sable Falls is approximately a mile by road or less if you walk the beach. Sable Lake is around 2 miles away from The Bay Cabin. The local bars and restaurants are about 500 feet away and the same for the local markets and playground. The Grand Marais bay is a good spot to pull your sailing boat into, and in fact, you can park it in the water infront of The Bay Cabin. The area is also a favorite for snowmobilers, hunters and general summer goers. Local fireworks are set off over the bay for July 4th and New Years Eve.
