Our Favorite Get Away Location

  • 4 of 5
We stay here every fall and spring. Just stayed 6 nights for our 15 year anniversary and loved it! My wife and I love to fish, relax, wine and dine and enjoy quiet evenings together. The house has a great view, good fishing location, great dock and all the comforts of home. The house is easy to get to and all the conveniences are only 5 minutes away. Definitely the best value at SML! Roger the owner is very accommodating and great to work with. Great cable and a 55" TV is the icing on the cake!

Fall Weekend

Even with rain over the weekend, our weekend getaway was gorgeous. Beautiful view of the leaves just starting to change from the living room. This is a comfortable getaway house and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and boating/fishing between the raindrops :)

Not Good!

  • 1 of 5
"Roger's Retreat" was the worst house I've ever stayed at. Not only did we have to clean all of the dishes upon arriving there, we also found out that the AC was leaking and we would be responsible for putting towels down to soak up the water and change out buckets of water while the AC leaked. We thought this would be a slower leak, but we had to change the towels approximately every couple of hours. We also found out that there is red mold in the house, and several of us had allergic reactions after our stay (itchy eyes and throats). If all of this wasn't enough, the couch was being held up by a rock, the chair has a broken arm, and there were roach hotels scattered throughout the house. Not exactly what you expect on vacation. The neighbors and the convenience of the house are the only thingss that made the house enjoyable. The rest of it was terrible, thank goodness no one was high maintenance that came along for the trip.

Owner's Response: I am greatly disappointed with the review given by these tenants, and I would like to respond. First regarding the leak. I only found out about it a few hours before they were scheduled to arrive, and I was to go out of town. I offered to let them out of the agreement over that, but they said it would not be an issue. The leak was condensation from the A/C, and i did not want to send a repairman in to disturb them while they were staying. They had the option to leave if they wanted to, and i would have refunded their money. I left them towels to keep up with the water. With regard to the rock supporting a corner of the couch....which has been there for years with no incident or complaints....completely hidden from view. I don't know what they were doing on my couch, but there were feathers on the floor and the place was left dirty. Regarding the broken arm on the chair.....I did not know I had a chair with a broken arm, not sure they didn't break it while they were rocking the couch and spilling feathers. There are no roaches or roach traps at my house. I merely keep ant traps around the sink because from time to time we get ants as do many of the houses in the area. If they had just told me so I would have sent them home and refunded their money.....never knew there was that big problem. I never want anyone staying at my place who is not happy.....but I can't address the problems if I am not told. The first I heard of any of this after the initial move in was in this review. Again, i am sorry for the inconvenience, but if they were not happy, they should have told me so. The leak has been repaired, the rock replaced, and the feathers and trash cleaned up....oh well...life goes on.

Thanksgiving getaway

  • 3 of 5
The location is great. Beautiful view of the lake and not far from shopping and restaurants. Roger called us the night we checked in to make sure everything was ok. Unfortunately, the prior guest had left trash under the sink, so we had to deal with fruit flies during our stay, even after we had removed the trash. I let Roger know this though so he can address with his cleaning service. Overall the house was clean, but could use a thorough spring cleaning (cobwebs in corners, etc.) The house was adequate for what we were looking for - time away with each other. If we had taken a vacation with our children, we would have looked for a bigger place with a game room, but this suited us fine. House could use some minor updates, new carpeting, fresh paint. The oven is clean, however the stove top burners did not have drip pans under them so they all lean, which makes cooking on the stove a little difficult at times. I've read the other reviews and saw complaints about not enough cookware, etc. There were plenty of pots and pans that I could see. Another complaint I've seen in other posts is about no blankets etc in the house. It does say bring your own linens, however most of us think of that as just sheets and towels. The house is basic. no comforters or pillows, so make sure you bring your own. I had e-mailed with Roger prior to our arrival though and he made sure I knew to bring blankets, along with sheets and towels. Other complaints I've read regard the loose spindles on the deck. I did notice these as well and told Roger about these as well when we spoke. The deck is large with a picnic table and a charcoal grill for your use. There is a large screen tv in the den, along with a dvd player, and the house does have wifi. Overall, it was a decent place to stay with a gorgeous view of the water, even while sitting on the sofa. If you are just looking for the basics at a good price, this is a decent place to stay.

Pay attention to reviews - BYOB

When he says bring linens, that DOES mean blankets, also! Thankfully, there is a Dollar General on Scruggs Road that has an adequate offering of warm, cheap blankets. Our sisters group are very used to renting houses at SML as well as other locations, and we have NEVER had to bring blankets. The "fully stocked kitchen" is NOT condusive to any type of real cooking. Pots and pans are either very used, very dirty or completely misshapen. Any dish that was not taken out of the dishwasher had to be washed prior to using. The floors were vacuumed, but I am not completely sure what the cleaning fee is actually used for. Please do not allow small children out on the deck close to the railing - at least half of the spindles are loose from the deck boards.
The view from the deck is 'awesomely magnificient' and perhaps the redeeming feature. The beds are all comfortable and clean (bare) and the couches are comfortable.
We could not honestly recommend this place for anyone other than men - bachelor parties, fishing parties, etc.

Owner's Response: It seems this person is a victim of her own poor reading skills. It is clearly known on the web site that all tenants must bring their own bed and bath linens....no one else had a problem reading and understanding this...just not sure what part of this wasn't clear to the person posting....or why? I advertised my kitchen as fully stocked and it is. There are pots and pans there to cook what ever you wish. Again tenants have used these all summer with out incident. Although i must admit that some of my pots and pans have sprouted feet and left.....which happens when stranger come and go in your home....but there are still enough to cook a meal.....may folks had done so over the summer. I tske issue with the cleanliness as of my place as it is cleaned before any new tenant comes in. The claim that half of the spindles are loose from the deck is simply not true. It seems the folks posting want a premium place but not pay a premium price for there are many other opportunities to rent here in Smith Mountain Lake. I just try to offer a clean relaxing family atmosphere at a reasonable price. If people want luxury, they should be willing to to pay for it..not travel on value and complain later about imperfections based on their interpretation of perfection. Also, one must look at the turn around time between those tenants who leave and those that are coming...usually that is only a couple of hours....which makes it virtually impossible to take out every dish, glass, cup and saucer and clean each one to perfection along with th3 rest of the house. I am also not sure if Ms. Clark would agree to the hefty cleaning fee to take the time for such cleaning. For these reasons, I always stock the kitchen with disposable cups, plates and flatware to insure that you have clean utensils. As for the pots and pans....suitability is in the eye of the beholder. If you are one who cooks a lot and is particular about your utensils...then you should be aware enough to bring your own. I provide basic cookware that was used all summer by tenants with no complaints. I am sorry that the supply of pots and pans are not to her liking...but there were more at the beginning of the season....but with the comings and goings of tenants....some of my utensils went too. Again, Ms. Clark, are you willing to pay more to restock pots and pans each time a tenant walks off with one? But are you willing to pay the user fees for fixing the imperfections?

Spectacular view. Great fishing. House, grounds, and dock could use some TLC in the way of cleaning, picking up, and repair. Price was good tho. Owner was responsive. Wifi was useful for us. Location near rental boats was good. Climb up the stairs from dock to house had us oldies huffing and puffing. All in all we had a relaxing time.
