Skiing/Snowboarding. The funicular up to Les Arcs 1600 which connects to the enormous Paradiski is only 10-12 minutes drive down the mountain from the Chalet.
Also within about a half hour drive there’s access to many of the best resorts in the Tarentaise Valley, Les Arcs, La Plagne, La Rosière, St Foy and even Val d'Isère and Tignes.
In Summer, with mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, golf, hiking, white water rafting, climbing, paragliding and even Summer Skiing, the Tarentaise should appeal to the most active person.
The unique charm and character of the mountain villages makes them a truly magical place to simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. They're not purpose built holiday resorts; they are living, breathing villages where traditional alpine lifestyle's survive. The breath taking '5 Lakes' walk starts from the fort and takes around 2 hours
The Cormet de Roseland, which passes below the village, provides the spectacular setting for a famous stage of 'The Tour De France'. Along this route towards Beaufort lies the extaordinary L'aiguille des glaciers, part of the Tour du Mont-Blanc, a protected vallee only accessible in Summer that retains it's glacier snow thoughout the year.
We live in Kent in the UK and travel to the Tarentaise several times a year.
Tom & Sandie Wontner purchased this apartment in 2005
We enjoyed several holidays in the Tarentaise. During one Summer holiday we looked for something special to purchase and an old farm house in the heart of Les Echines caught our imagination. We were attracted by its rugged character of the house and the mountains, the fantastic skiing in Les Arcs and the possibility of having a place we could use in both Summer and Winter. A few years of graft later, the chalet was complete, much to the delight of locals who had seen it uninhabited for nearly 50 years.
Totally unique winter holidays in a real alpine village with access to some of the best ski resorts in France, all a relatively short drive. An opportunity to see a real Alpine village that hasn't been 'disney-fied'. (Many of the village house still have traditional alpine central heating....cows.)
The locals all know that south facing slopes are by far the best place to live, providing lovely warm days in Summer and a protected a comfortable climate in Winter. Most bedrooms have their own sunny balcony and it's not unusual to sit on one in your t-shirt in the middle of January. Its big enough for the whole family to visit, and still has room for extra friends.
'We had a wonderful season and a large part of that was down to the wonderful flat and it's location. I think spending 4.5 - 5 months in the standard 18 to 24 square metre self catering box, either in Bourg or in a resort, would have sent us nuts!'
The apartment was as described and being disabled this is important to me. The bathroom is exceptional with it's walk in shower and large alpine bath. Everything we needed was provided. I would recommend this property without hesitation especially if you like the moutains
The town of Bourg St Maurice was within easy reach and there were plenty of restaurants and a very good Super U.
The trip up the funicular railway is an experience I will remember for along time it was fabulous.
I walk with crutches and found that everywhere we visited there were facilities I could manage and I didn't feel that I was missing out on any of the experiences available.
I hope to be able to reurn at some stage in the future.
Les Échines-Dessous (Alt.1230m) is on the sunny north side (facing south) of the Tarentaise valley, a 10 minute drive (6km) from BOURG SAINT MAURICE, which provides numerous shops and restaurants, several large supermarkets, the international railway station with adjacent funicular to LES ARCS, and a lovely pedestrian high street with a colourful Saturday morning outdoor street market.
In Winter the chalet provides high quality character accommodation with easy access to LES ARCS, and the adventurous skier has the flexibility to ski several other top French ski resorts all in the same week. In Summer, the village provides the perfect base for numerous alpine activities, everything from white water rafting, parapenting, kayaking, cycling, climbing or hiking. Or simply savour the relaxed picturesque mountain village with its local traditions and way of life.
Les Echines is a genuine Tarentaise village where traditional alpine lifestyles survive.
Other Activities: White Water Rafting, Canoe, Canyoning, Paragliding, Walking
Golf: Golf is available from late June till early September Mountain golf course at Arc 1800 on the mountainside facing Les Echines Dessous. Whether a skilled golfer or just a beginner, the Golf course in Arc 1800 was designed so that everyone can enjoy themselves. There are professionally run three or five day courses throughout the summer.
Ski: Chalet Tarine is situated in beautiful Les Échines-Dessous (alt.1230M). A sunny south facing Tarentaise village overlooking the ski resort of LES ARCS.
The bottom of the Les Arcs funicular is in Bourg Saint Maurice, a 6km drive from Chalet Tarine, which takes between 10-15 minutes. This is where you park and buy your ski pass and begin and end your days skiing.
The funicular itself takes 7 minutes and at the top of the funicular is Arcs '1600' from where you can ski the huge Les Arcs ski area, this includes the villages of Villaroger, Peisney Vallendry, plus Les Arcs 1800, 1950, and 2000.
Les Arcs is easily big enough to keep you busy all week, but the extraordinary Vanoise Express cable car connects Les Arcs directly to the 10 resorts and villages that form the huge LA PLAGNE ski area. Together 'Les Arcs' and 'La Plagne' form a 400KM ski area know as 'PARADISKI,' one of the largest ski areas in the world.
The ski resorts of La Rosiere and St Foy are also easily accessible.
