Sun & Sea:
The 'Costa Azul' is a place for beaches and coast. The Costa da Caparica, Melides and Tróia represent limitless space with sandy beaches stretching out as far as the eye can see. Portinho da Arrábida and Porto Covo reveal the rocky intimacy of secluded coves. Sesimbra affirms the Portuguese attitude to the sea.
On the 'Costa Azul' the Atlantic Ocean meets the coast. In places, huge sand dunes defy the sea, in others, secluded beaches cut out of the green hills assuage it. These obvious contrasts make this an ideal place for holidays, a choice of beach-type for all.
Summer on the 'Costa Azul' means long sunny days which enhance the originality and variety of the region. In the south one finds not only the sun but also the vastness of the blue ocean and the tranquility of the far-stretching beach. Nautical Sports:
On the Costa Azul - the sea and the river. The enormous sea which is called the Atlantic, the river with its colourful movement. Inland, the four dams of Campilhas, Vale do Gaio, Fonte Cerne and Pego do Altar, are vast stretches of water. The Albufeira and Santo André lakes, shimmer in a blue haze - offering plenty of space for all types of water sports.
Sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, rowing, surfing, motor boats, diving and fishing are all colourful pastimes on the Costa Azul. Sailing clubs and underwater centres are all there to give the necessary help when required. Trips may be taken on the Sado galleons and Tagus river craft, in true traditional fashion. Sea trips - always full of promise, bright light and dolphins. Sado dolphins- symbol of the sea and the Costa Azul. The sea around the Costa Azul offer adventure and discovery - in all four seasons of the year. The Atlantic offers sporting opportunities in thousands of different ways.
Gastronomy:
The region of the 'Costa Azul' is made up of two very distinct areas of gastronomic traditions: the coastal area where fish dishes predominate, and the interior where the food has characteristic touches of Alentejo.
As the 'Costa Azul' is an area of the most freshly caught fish with an abundance of sea food, the customary high quality of the catch justifies that certain species are often associated with these places: whiting and swordfish from Sesimbra and red mullet from Setúbal. Eel stew and a stew made of assorted varieties of fish, fish soup, 'angler' fish a local mint, clams and charcoal grilled shad are some of the better known specialities.
Azeitão is noted for its swiss rolls with a sweet egg filling, while in nearby Palmela a speciality is pears done in local wine.
Cheese made from ewe's milk in Azeitão and wines produced in the region of Palmela, with special emphasis on 'Moscatel' and 'Periquita' varieties, are also intemationally renowned for their high quality.
