*The Seastar Retreat is closed for the Winter Season.*
The Seastar Retreat is seaside living at its best. From the moment you step into the main room overlooking the sea, you enter an expansive world with a view to the horizon. The hummingbirds play hide and seek in the trees while the waves crash against the rocky cove below. The sea breeze blows calmly in the morning while you contemplate your day's adventure. Perhaps you'll take a morning stroll on the beach, or investigate the tide pools for starfish, or carve mussels off the rocks -- a glimmer catches your eye as you watch a whale go by...
Inside the Seastar are all the amenities of home... well, that is if you have an ocean view at home! And you can enjoy the view from the living room, the sun room, the bedroom, the kitchen or the seaside decks. With private access to the beach, it's easy to spend the day exploring the beaches, flying a kite, seeking out tide pools or just relaxing and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
*Note: The Seastar Retreat is the upstairs 'apartment' of a home with a separate entrance.
We've rented in and around Brookings a lot, but we've never stayed at a place like this. Open the front door and the way the view is framed just knocks you out (like no other we've seen in Brookings). Then, open the sliding doors onto the deck and the sound knocks you out. In stereo, the sound of the ocean hits you in your left ear, and the sound of a rushing stream hits you in your right. Make sure you keep the window open in the bedroom at night because then you'll go to sleep and wake up to these stereo sounds. I could go on about easy access to town and a great beach, but you can get that lots of places in Brookings. What you can't get, however, are all of these sights and sounds in one place. If that's what you're into, the Seastar Retreat is the spot.
This beautiful oceanfront home truly is a wonderful coastal retreat! Although there are so many amazing and fun places to explore in and around the area, you don't even have to leave the house to enjoy a luxurious vacation experience. Everything you need is right at your doorstep! The house itself is beautifully furnished with many cozy areas to relax and take in the stunning ocean view. It is equipped with a lovely kitchen and all the amenities you need for a home-away-from-home experience. The private staircase leading right to the beach provides easy access to relaxation: you can explore tide pools, observe sea life, walk barefoot in the sand or sit and watch the sun set over the sea. The front yard is gorgeous with a magical treehouse and flowers blooming in every corner. The gated entry and secure wall provide a secluded hideaway from coastal travelers on scenic Highway 101. It is a perfect vacation spot for kids and grown-ups alike. We especially enjoyed all the care and little details provided that made us truly feel like guests in someone's home. We hated to see our lovely stay come to an end and we will definitely be returning to this relaxing retreat!
This is an apartment on the second floor of a house. The first floor is occupied by the owner.
The view from this place is simply unbeatable from every room of the house, as well as from a very large balcony. It is also quite beautifully furnished and has some small library of books, and a nice selection of DVDs and tapes.
The only negative is that the house is right on the highway 101. However, the noise from the highway seems to be not a problem, because sounds of ocean waves are dominating, and besides the bedroom is isolated from the highway.
I hesitate to write this review only because we have been visiting this property for several years and it feels like our secret hideaway. This is a beautiful rental, fully equipped with whatever you might need to make your stay comfortable. Every time we have visited, the place has been very clean and well maintained. The views from the home are just as described and pictured, perched above an amazing beach with private access via the staircase I have dubbed 'stairway to heaven'. Lots of tide pools to explore and rocks to climb, a short walk form Harris Beach. We have 2 kids who talk about this trip all year long. They spend hours on the beach digging in the sand, dancing in the waves and documenting the contents of the tide pools. We have seen seals and whales just off the shore, although we didn't spot any whales this trip. There is the coolest treehouse in the front yard in a beautifully maintained garden where the kids like to go hang out and play or read. The property is right off highway 101, but has a private gate and is fenced in so it feels very secluded. It is a safe place for the kids to run around and play. There is plenty to do nearby. We have done lots of hiking on the pacific coast trail, visited the redwoods, played in the Chetco, Smith, Rogue and Klamath rivers. This trip we took a jet boat tour up the Klamath river, visited the Trees of Mystery and spent some time lounging and playing around in the Chetco river. My husband went fishing and caught us some tasty fish, I found a great yoga studio in town and took some classes on a couple of rainy mornings. Sometimes it is difficult to get motivated to get out and explore, it is so easy to just hang out and enjoy the view and relax in the huge comfy sunroom or on the decks. We have recommended this place to many friends and family members who have never been disappointed. Love this place!
Brookings, Oregon is located 6 miles north of the California border on Hwy 101 and is a central point for visiting numerous wilderness areas, including the Kalmiopsis Wilderness area, Loeb State Park, Harris Beach State Park, Jedidiah Smith State Park and the Redwood National Forests.. In the Summer months you can take a trip up the Rouge River on one of the Mail Boat tours. Or spend time sea kayaking up the Chetco River while you watch for wildlife. There are many ways to enjoy the warm summer ocean breezes. Whether you take a walk along Harris Beach or fly a kite as high as the wind will take it....it's hard not to find yourself amazed by the simple beauty that surrounds you. Brookings is famous for storm watching in the winter months. Sit high above the crashing waves while you gaze out the windows and watch the wonder of nature take place just below you. Be sure to catch the whales as they migrate in the winter and spring months.

Visit Loeb State Park and take a hike through the Myrtle Wood trees that inhabit nearly 320 acres of forest. Be sure to stop and pick some fresh, wild blueberries or blackberries along the trails to take back and enjoy .Whether you just want a relaxing day in the sun while you catch up on your reading or a day full of adventure...Brookings and The Seastar Retreat can make it happen.
