I live on the top floor of this building, which my husband, an architect, and I bought thirty years ago. We have enjoyed living here and renting to interesting people who share our love of this Mediterranean style vintage brick building. It's on a corner of two quiet streets, but only minutes from lively areas on the north side where I grew up.

June Finfer purchased this studio in 1982

We bought this building because of its location in a real Chicago neighborhood, its proximity to music and theatre events in the center city and the north shore,

and because we love to take walks and see people from all different backgrounds enjoying the park. Cycling paths are nearby, and O'Hare airport is a short drive away. We call it 'the old country' because so many people we meet who have moved way out to the suburbs are from this area, and remember it with fondness. Young people are once again moving here, and it's great to see all ages, all kinds of people living together in these vintage buildings.

We had been renting a large apartment of the same vintage (1928) just east of here, and when we decided to buy a building we discovered this area, just a mile from our apartment. We called it 'Brigadoon' because it just seemed to appear one day -- it had 'old world charm' and Mediterranean arches and ironwork. The apartments were flooded with light from tall windows with no other buildings nearby (on a corner). We completely rewired the building and improved the kitchens, and the final touch is completing the lst level apartment that we are offering for vacation and short term rentals. We enjoy our tree-lined street, the shady backyard with a new trellis and hope you will, too.

very nice studio

  • 5 of 5
This studio was a very nice and clean place this was the chosen place you would not be disapointed.
The kitchen was the best ever all the room to cook and really feel at home loved the kitchen.
this was a big studio because of the size and space of the kitchen, the bed was extra soft and comfortable.
as for walking this would be a quite of a walk, to get to the nearest store you will need transportation.
other than that was really nice would love to repeat when back in town don't forget to ask about the market center great restraunts thanks again Jennifer

I liked this studio apartment because it really felt like three separate rooms. There was a long galley kitchen, a dining and TV watching area, and a bedroom. And the large , separate bathroom was very nice.

Memorial Weekend 2013!

  • 5 of 5
I have to say that we LOVED the studio! The unique layout and open floor plan really is a great concept. We truly made use of the patio every evening after strolling the city for hours. The owner was excellent at communicating with us from first contact until after our departure. She even left a vmail checking in on us (which I didn't get until after we were back in MN). She left dish soap on the front stoop (which we had just said, the only thing we are missing is soap to wash our dishes). :) The bathroom was supplied with EVERY toiletry you could think of and plenty of linens. The stop to the EL is exactly 1.2 miles from the property. It is said there is a bus that gets you closer, however the bus that is only runs during PRIME times (a.m rush hour and p.m rush hour). We came home late in the evenings and had NO issues...the neighborhood was very safe feeling.
I think saying there is a really neat park with beach and walking paths 1 mile down the street on Lake Michigan would be a great ADD! We accidently discovered it and we spent a whole day laying at the beach. With that being said: a great addition to the property would be beach/park stuff. Maybe a wagon or bikes with umbrella, beach towels, cooler, and chairs. :) Just a helpful added selling point?!
We LOVED being out of the city and a place to come HOME to at the end of long days.
The only real complaints we had:
1. The El is difficult to reach by bus (so prepare to walk over a mile to get back)
2. The TV is really small (add a dvd or cable)
3. This may seem crazy saying but add something under the wheels to prevent the trundle bed from sliding. It was hard to climb over the other person because it caused the bed to "move" a little but more importantly it made for really hilarious "intimate" moments. It did become the joke of our trip and we still laugh. Other people may not have that sense of humor. This was our "romantic getaway."
4. The fridge had a half eaten candy bar in it.
Those were our only issues. An added fire pit would be a great addition?
Thank you for everything!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review! (I think the date is 2014)
I've fixed the bed so it doesn't move! Good idea for beach chairs and stuff -- we do have two bikes which may be used upon request.
If you come with a car, there is reasonable parking near the train/bus lines, but most guests find the walk to the bus/train pleasant. I'm glad you had a good stay! Come again!

I arrived in Chicago in a deep freeze. They cancelled hundreds of flights after I arrived. It was nice to have a comfortable, warm spot to come home to after visiting with my daughter and granddaughter to watch TV, or read, or listen to music. Everything was in this studio apartment that I needed. The bathroom is great! The apartment was very clean. June is a very nice person and we spoke several times during my stay. I hope the next time I come to Chicago it's not 19 below! But I would definitely stay here again.

Lovely place to stay!

  • 5 of 5
This was a wonderful place to stay.
We left our car in the neighborhood & walked to & from the El. It's a bit of a hike, but we felt safe, and it was fun to see more of the neighborhood. The apartment itself works well for 2 or 3 people. The bathroom was great &, the kitchen works fine for light cooking. The large bed was a little hard, but we got used to it. A rollaway was provided for our daughter. The owner was out of town, so we never had the chance to meet her, but she provided all the information needed to get into the apt. & checkout at the end of our stay.
The photos are very accurate, and the apartment was extremely quiet. We would definitely stay here again, & I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to be out of the hustle & bustle, but close enough to get there by train.

Positive Experience

  • 4 of 5
Everything was as described. Did not get to meet the owner, but did have phone contact. The refrigerator was abundantly stocked, the coffee grinder and maker were the only things used. The low bed was a problem for my arthritic condition, yet it was comfortable. Have already recommended to relatives.
