Photos and Description of the Highlands vacation apartment rental

Secluded but not remote, just 2.6 miles from Main St. Highlands.EXTRA NICE & CLEAN, very private upstairs Coach House apartment. Like new, built in 2008 and seldom used. Full kitchen including dish washer, new king size bed (Westin Hotel Heavenly Bed). Spacious ,light and airy with windows on 4 sides. Located in beautiful and well groomed Falling Waters community. Nice walking neighborhood, very little traffic, mostly easy terrain..go up to Hide Away Hill if you like more challenge or walk down to the bottom of the falls if you want burning buns. Stop at the little creek-side park and and watch the brook go by. There are lots of birds, wild flowers and little critters around.

About Neil Van Hoogen

We came to the Highlands area in 1996 from Palm Beach County Florida after retiring (Show & Sell publications). We fell in love with the area and became 'accidental hands on developers' of Falling Waters a fifty two acre community....long story. We attend Community Bible Church, (one of the highlights of the area) where Paula sings in the choir. We keep busy taking care of the development...mowing, blowing leaves, weed wacking, planting flowers etc. We like to take short trips in our 5th wheel when we can.

Neil Van Hoogen purchased this apartment in 1998

This beautiful , peaceful carriage house was more amazing than we ever expected. We enjoyed staying and celebrating our 30th anniversary in this amazing little nest that was decorated as a Five Star room with everything we needed and more. We relaxed on the private deck and listened to natures best and then slept in a heavenly bed after watching a fun movie from a variety of movie selections. We hope you enjoy you stay as much as we did.

My husband and I loved every second of our stay at the Nest for Two! It was the perfect size, so nicely set up, clean and fresh, beautiful windows on all sides, birds to watch outside the seat in the den, close proximity to Highlands. Just magnificent! We will definitely be recommending it to our family and friends!

Owner's Response: This young couple turned out to be nephew & niece of some wonderful friends of ours! They had been referred by their cousins, who stayed with us a few weeks back. Thank you so much for leaving the apartment sooo nicely! That made getting ready for the next guest so much easier.
I love the way God knits people together in interesting & wonderful ways!

Amazing Weekend Away!

My wife and I loved the accomodations that this lovely couple prepeared for us! This is a very well-appointed residence that packs a lot in a small space. Every inch of this place is well desined and decorated. We felt that there was no detail left out of this place! Neil and Paula even wrote us a handwritten letter welcoming us to their place. To put it over the top they had written a happy anniversary card to us along with a champagne bottle and 2 champagne glasses awaiting us in the refrigerator. I highly reccomend this place to anyone that is needing a place to stay in the highlands and wants to feel like they are at home. As a side note, the community that this place is in is immaculate! The scenery here is breathtaking! We will definitely be returning here. The one and only downfall to our stay wa that the wifi kept failing and would work for about 30 minutes after a rebbot of the router but then would die again. This was not a huge problem for us as we needed to get away from work anyways!
Recommended for:  Adventure Seekers, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: We appreciate the 5 star rating even though the wi- fi wasn't acting right! Up here in the mountains, we can experience a weather interference with wi-fi signals. We try & keep it going as best as possible... It is so much fun to prepare little surprises for people when we know ahead of time if there is a special occasion! So let us know!

Best birthday weekend in years...

5 of 5
Submitted: March 10, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
After being obnoxiously fiddled with for an entire week by the crack response team for Miss Rebecca's Cottage (my initial choice), I thought I'd try booking this place based on all the wonderful reviews - and, more importantly, the owners' responses to those reviews. I emailed them and received an email back almost immediately from Neil, with a great rate for single occupancy. I was travelling alone for my birthday to celebrate it with a good friend and chef who works in Highlands, NC, and I was on a tight budget. Having a family, I haven't taken a time-out alone in many years. So, I booked it right away, and I'm so glad I did. I was guided every step of the way by Neil ("There's icy roads back here, take this road instead..." etc), and upon my arrival, I was greeted with a thoughtful birthday card and an immaculate apartment. The kitchen is tiny bit fully functional; it doesn't feel small at all. They even provided tons of bottled water to drink and cook with (because the normally excellent water source had recently become a bit too hard after a strong series of storms). The bathroom is phenomenal, stocked with just about everything and tastefully designed with a mountain cabin feel.

The Sony Bravia television is wonderful to watch movies on, and there are nice accents and useful devices tucked away everywhere. The furniture is comfortable, especially the bed. I wanted to take it home, lol! My buddy ended up staying with me for part of the vacation, and he said the couch was pretty comfortable, too. Of course, this is supposed to be a "nest for two" (as in a romantic couple) so it's not ideal for a couple of buddies to rent per se, but my friend staying over was unplanned. Just ended up being more convenient for what we had planned all weekend, and because it snowed pretty good the first night up there. Driving on icy mountain roads after birthday bourbon would have been a bad choice!

Note: I overstayed my welcome by about 2 hours on the last day of my trip. I mistakenly thought that 11am was check-in and 2pm was check-out, and that is completely backwards. Very politely, they asked if I was ready to leave around noon, and I realized my mistake and packed as quickly as I could. They were very gracious about it, and in my hurry, I left my phone charger under the bedside table; they offered to mail it to me. I cant recommend this place enough, and it's true: the owners are worth the booking all by themselves!
Recommended for:  Sightseeing
Owner's Response: We love to hear of the details! It is so gratifying to have such an appreciative letter! Thank you! We have decided to go ahead and install a vent fan over the stove, as this is a fully equipped kitchen and longer stays usually mean more cooking... Although the apartment is very private, we are always a phone call or text away and we will always try and make sure you arrive safely and have everything you need for a comfortable stay!
