CASA DAS VINHAS

Funchal Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedrm, sleeps 2, easy walk to sea, shops, restaurants & Reid's Palace, Madeira

These three charmingly restored gems sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Reids Palace Hotel.

Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor’s accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment.

A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Each cottage is self- contained with 1 bedroom/bathroom and an outlook of tropical fruit trees and plants. 2 have patios shaded by vines in warmer months and 2 are entirely ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile. The resident owners speak English and Portuguese. The family pool is available 09.00-17.00. Sorry, no children

WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE: Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters.

Just down the road you have the oldest and possibly most prestigious hotel on the island, Reid's Palace, where they serve the famous afternoon 'Tea at Reid's' on the terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean. (Pre-booking necessary.) Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shows and concerts.

You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area.

The nearest small supermarket is less than 5 minutes' walk.

Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.

ABOUT QUINTA VISTA ALEGRE: The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira Garden” about his garden and the island.

The “Vista cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted from the old Billiard House and Stables and Factors accommodation.

PERFECT GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
On arrival we received a lovely greeting, which included a full tour of the property, an explanation of how everything worked and what we would find in the area. The property was in first class condition was everything we expected and more. Casa das Vinhas is in a really good location, close to the sea, with the old town in one direction and the "hotel quarter", in the other direction. Both of these areas have plentiful shops, restaurants and bars. The property is up a short but steep hill, but that is the nature of Madeira. At the bottom of the hill was a really nice patisserie and ice cream parlour, so you could refresh yourself before walking up the 100 metres or so. The Casa was set in secluded gardens with banana trees and grape vines surrounding the property. The Casa and the gardens were very well maintained and a joy to relax in after a day out.

IDYLLIC LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
This is the most perfect location. A scenic walk into Funchal takes about 15 mins which can take you through the fabulous gardens with some great sea views, it took us about 25 mins coming back as there are a few steepish hills to tackle but there is a bus stop near the gate if you prefer and we found local transport everywhere to be excellent. We were very impressed that once through the green door, the natural banana plantation setting for the cottages was like a being transported into another world and any traffic noise almost disappeared. The accommodation has been renovated to a very good standard and provides most things you could possibly want with an excellent sized swimming pool that, when we were there, almost felt like it was just for us. The bottle of Madeira wine and fresh fruit was very welcome and the only thing we thought lacking was books on the local area, flowers and wildlife, local bus service information and perhaps some books or leaflets on walking the levadas. There are so many restaurants to choose from to suit any taste you really are spoilt for choice and there is a patisserie and Spar shop nearby for your daily essentials. We found Buffy & Zino very welcoming and friendly hosts but not at all obtrusive. This is a very relaxing place to stay and we would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes peace and quiet together with the convenience of being close to everything. Thank you both for sharing your oasis in Funchal.

A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Madeira at the Casa das Vinhas. It was our first visit to the island and first time ever staying on a banana plantation! The cottage is quaint, clean, airy, comfortable and well equipped with everything you need. The sofa is so comfy to lounge on after a good days levada walking! The location is great as you are only a 15-20 min walk from the centre of Funchal and yet you have complete peace and quiet at the property. There are plenty of restaurants and a couple of little food stores nearby if you don't want to go into the centre. We would highly recommend the cottage and Madeira as a holiday destination. The levada walks are fantastic and easy to follow, we saw whales on our boat trip, its easy to get about on the local buses and by taxi, the local food and wine is great - in short a wonderful holiday, we'll be back.

Owner's Response: So pleased that your first visit to Madeira was such a success and that we helped in making it so! The whales are always exciting to see, as are the dolphins and the weather continues to be great with warmth and sun.

HOME FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
We run a 4star b&b near Shrewsbury UK and know all about setting standards. This cottage was a winter escape for us and it certainly fitted the bill for us.Everything is within easy reach including a local Spa shop and tea shop .You can walk into Funchal in about 15 minutes via a lovely park overlooking the ocean.Or if you prefer there is a bus stop outside the gates to the property.
The cottage, although fairly central is in fact a banana plantation and is set in about 8 acres of land. The cottage has a very well equipt kitchen and with comfortable sofas to relax in the evening. It also has a satellite dish which means you can pick up all the UK channels if you wish.
The area is quiet and peaceful which certainly helped us to relax before our return to the UK.Well done Buffy.

EVEN BETTER.....

  • 5 of 5
I must admit to a certain amount of anxiety on two counts. We had stayed at Casa do Feitor last year and I was concerned that a second stay could not match the surprising comfort of the first, and that perhaps the standards had slipped a bit with time. I needn't have worried.

This is a remarkable property. I provides everything that we could wish for in a holiday home. Yes, it is clean, yes, it is very well maintained, yes, it is equipped to a very high standard, and yes it is very well located, being within walking distance of the centre of wonderful Funchal and yet having a privacy that you would only expect in a much more rural setting. But over and above all that there is a ambience to the place; a feeling of being in the right place. And this is accomplished without any feeling of being fussed over; Buffy is always available without being intrusive. I can recommend Quinta Vista Alegre cottages without reservation; the perfect context in which to explore Madeira.

AN OASIS IN FUNCHAL

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for two weeks in March. The cottage is clean, spacious, airy, comfortable, south facing and delightfully situated in a private estate. The owners are very pleasant and helpful. Their Estate is a pleasant 15 minute walk, all downhill, into town.

If you plan to rent a car get a small one as the entrance to the drive is narrow and manoeuvering within the car park tricky.

If you plan to do a lot of cooking get up to date with the concept of combi microwave ovens.

We hope to return.

Madeira’s charming capital town of Funchal, with its 140,000 inhabitants, sits in a large bowl that rises from a natural deep-water harbour on the south of this sub tropical island to an impressive backdrop of high mountains. It is the island’s centre of activity, with something for everyone such as: a theatre, chic shops, street stalls, open market, wine lodges, museums, city parks, bars, cafés and endless restaurants, multi-screen cinema, a 15th century Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Anglican Church built in 1822. This beautiful island is famous for its tropical gardens, two championship golf courses, truly wonderful mountain and coastal walking, ocean swimming, sailing, game fishing, etc. and, above all, its friendly Portuguese inhabitants. Verdant and with varied topography and stunning scenery, it is definitely worth exploring the island and the new network of roads. For local info, please see 'FURTHER DETAILS'.

Other Activities: Madeira is famous for its tropical gardens and its 'levada' walks which extend into the beautiful mountain areas with dramatic scenery.
