Started coming to the Islands way back in 1972 almost every other year till 2010. Stayed both in Kaanappalii / Lahina area and the Kihei area. Worked for a year on Maui in 1989 and lived at KBS Unit 117 and came to the conclusion that if you wanted to enjoy all that Maui had to offer you and you didn't want to spend all day in the Rental Car, Kihei was the most central area on the Island and North Kihei in Particular
Mel purchased this studio in 2010
Kihei Bay Surf and Kihei itself as indicated is centrally located on the Island. With the shortest of times from the Condo to Maui's points of interest and enjoyment. Which makes it the most logical place to stay and is inexpensive BOOK EARLY AND STAY LONG TO GET THE MOST FOR YOUR MONEY

This studio condo in north Kihei was perfect for us. It has absolutely everything you need as others have described, and we really appreciated the hiking trails and Maui guidebooks. While it's an older condo complex, it was very clean and we liked that it wasn't a highrise resort, was very relaxed and the pool/hot tub/grill was closeby. The beach across the street was great for sunsets (as was the Indian restaurant). While No. Kihei is not the most scenic (a lot of mini malls) that made for lots of affordable restaurants and the location is perfect for travel to all parts of the island. Our favorite snorkeling was in So Kihei and south of there - turtles and monk seals at Makena Landing beach! On the road to Hana be sure to stop at Waianapanapa state park and walk a bit along the cliff trail from the black sand beach parking lot. Mel was the perfect 'landlord' - he sent us snorkeling info ahead of time and was amazingly accommodating when we almost had to cancel due to illness and then got there a day late due to airline issues. We would definitely recommend this property, and if Hawaii weren't so far away from Vermont we'd happily stay there again!
I took my son to Maui as a gift for his high school graduation! We had an amazing time! Mel and Amy truly make it feel like a home away from home! From all the suggestion on places to go to the beach toys and towels waiting for us ..we didn't have to worry about a thing!! They think of everything!! Just made our photo book from our trip and I realized I forgot something!! I apologize for the lateness of this review...life just speeds up and it is already a year later, but I will never forget the awesome time we had in part to Mel and Amy!! Hope to return again and will only stay at Maui Mel's!!
I have been telling everyone who asks about our Hawaii trip about this unit. The apartment is perfect and one of the cleanest you will find. Everything you need for the beach is in the closet and you will find a great little beach across the road.
The pool was also a great place to soak up both the sun and water. And if you are into cooking it is a snap with everything supplied.
It was a joy to stay at Maui Mel's and I absolutely recommend
it for a quiet, relaxing and fun week. Thanks Mel and Amy....
Just as we expected our time in Maui and the amenities offered at Kihei Bay Surf did not disappoint. The condo is well maintained with all the comforts of home and is in an excellent location. We appreciated the free long distance calling and the Tommy Bahama beach chairs. Thank you once again Amy and Mel.
Maui Mel's studio was very nice and cozy. The appliances were all as described and I would have given a 5 star but the couch could use replacing---. I had the bed and my daughter slept on the convertible couch. The bed and pillows were comfy. The bath towels were nice and thick as were the beach towels (although we had our own).It was nice and quiet and plenty of stores and restaurants near by. It has a very nice shower and the extra sink area was very handy. I feel we got a lot for the money. Also--had a very nice pool and hot tub area.
This is a great place, well maintained, and WELL STOCKED with EVERYTHING you would need!! I have been coming to Maui for years and have stayed in hotels, villas, & condos all over the island. This is the 3rd different unit I have stayed in @ KBS...and by far, the best!!! It is BRIGHT (a lot of units are not), modern, clean, and beyond well stocked! the 2nd bathroom sink is such a huge convenience that you don't even appreciate until you use it! I didn't watch TV much, but the added cable channels were a nice option. I loved the fact that there was a keyless entry and tile floors (as opposed to Pergo). I cannot say enough about Mel & Amy...the communication was always immediate and friendly. I requested a late checkout last minute (not thinking it would be accepted, but figured it was worth asking), and Mel & Amy kindly allowed me to stay a few hours longer. Thank you again for that!! I only have one suggestion...perhaps a full length mirror somewhere in the unit? Maybe on the wall behind the front door, or on the wall outside (or inside) the bathroom? I recommend this beautiful unit without hesitation and will DEFINITELY stay again!! Mahalo!!!
Across the street is the Kalepolepo Beach Park that looks out on what used to be the Hawaiian Royalties Private 2 acre Fishing Pond. It is suitable for wading, snorkeling or just sitting in the Evening watching the beautiful Sunsets. Adjacent to the Park is the Hawaiian Humpback Whale National Sanctuary and Education Center
To go north for a 3 min drive or 10 min walk gets you to Malpoino O'e Lou Beach Park, which is considered by many to be the second best Windsurfing area on the Island Of Maui. Going for 7 to 10 min drive south takes you to Kam'ole Beach l,ll,lll and a little further to Makena's Big and Little Beach. Between those two locations is one of the Best snorkeling areas for seeing Turtlles and assorted Tropical Fish it is located at the Ocean Front Beach Hotel and 5 Palms Restaurant (great Breakfasts starting at 8 am) Having breakfast there and then walking 50 ft to the Beach and more often than not going snorkeling with Turtle's is Priceless.
To list all of Kehei Bay Surf's and surrounding areas attributes and Unit 215's would take a James Michner novel but that is for sitting on the Beach and reading 'HAWAII' suffice it to say you'll like it. BOOK EARLY AND STAY LONG
