Yes, we really are that close to the beach and we took pictures to prove it. So be sure to check out the last three pictures in our photo album. These pictures, together with our owner's map of Union Pier say it all. (view map, then magnify a few times).
We have deeded access to our beach through the Luna Gowdy Beach Association. Our beach is private for the residents of our small subdivision of about 50 homes. The designated area is 300 feet of lake frontage, so there is plenty of room and our beach is seldom crowded.
Another nice feature regarding the beach is that our unit is located on the lake side of Lake Shore Road. You never have to cross that road or any other road to access the beach.
Our cozy condo (a little under 600 sq. ft.) is one of only nine units, surrounding a spacious courtyard. Recently renovated, we kept all of the 1930's charm, but added lots of contemporary comforts.
We loved all of our cottage's wooden,wrap-around casement windows, but we added plenty of skylights as well.
We couldn't part with the original, antique kitchen sink, but we also put in new custom cabinets and brand new appliances.
When it came to the bathroom, we looked for a simple vintage design for replacing the fixtures, but we couldn't resist installing
a Jacuzzi bath tub.
Even though it's cooler by the lake, we thought central air conditioning was a must for when the temperatures pushed too high.
Our unit includes two parking spaces, a huge backyard for picnicking and ball playing and of course, the use of our beach. We also have a gas grill right outside the back door of our unit.
Besides being so close to Lake Michigan, we are an easy walk to the Whistle Stop Grocery and Deli and the Red Arrow Road House Restaurant (3 to 3 1/2 blocks).
I am a general contractor and construction manager in Chicago. My wife and I have been enjoying this area for well over twenty years. We now reside in Riverside, but Union Pier will always be our first love.
We searched for a long time before we purchased our cottage.
Proximity to the lake and old world charm were the characteristics that we were looking for and our unit at Whispering Pines fulfilled both requirements.
Not only do we have a great location, but it has all of the vintage details that only an older cottage could have...the arched entryway into the kitchen, the old hand-sawn hardwood floors, 6 lite casement windows and that wonderful original, antique kitchen sink. Plus we are close to everything that Harbor Country has to offer.
