Cottage by the Ocean
We recently spent a week at this vacation cottage. The location from the Halifax airport is ideal, just a easy 45 min drive and you are on the ocean shore. The area where it is located is very picturesque. There are quaint fishing villages, a little beach and the Mill Cove fishing pier all within easy driving or even walking distances.
The owner, Stephanie, was very helpful in getting a highchair and pack and play for our toddler and even had toys set out for him, as well as games for our older boys. She was easy to communicate with and help us with our questions before and after arriving.
The cottage from the outside had plenty of patio furniture with a patio table , and a picnic table in the side yard. It did have a bit of a weathered look.
Inside the cottage things were quite eclectic. The upstairs bedrooms were nicely decorated with nice linens and airy colours. It was nice to have a washer and dryer available for use, but the washing machine was very noisy.
Downstairs on the main floor was the kitchen, great room, bathroom, and smaller side room. The kitchen was well stocked, but the dishwasher was not working. There were plenty of dishes to be used and cleaning supplies provided.
The bathroom was fine, with enough towels for the family and great water pressure in the shower.
We found the main room to be quite dark (we had 5 rainy/cloudy days). We would have loved to have a light over the dining room table. This may not be a problem if the days are sunny as there is a skylight.
We did use the fireplace the first evening as it was damp and cold, but it didn't draw very well for us (we are veteran fire builders :)), so the remaining cool evenings we just turned up the heat.
We could tell this this cottage was older as there was a damp musty smell upon entering. On the couple of sunny warmer days the cottage did seem to dry up a bit as we kept the windows open to air it out. A thorough cleaning of the carpet, and windows would be a good idea.
Overall, we did have a terrific time in Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg, as well as the Halifax waterfront are beautiful. The Lighthouse Route is a beautiful way to drive and see interesting villages and fishing harbours. The Hubbards Shore Club Lobster dinner is excellent! The all-you-can-eat mussels are fresh and the lobster was delicious! The lobster pound just up the road (Shadford's ) also has great cooked and cracked lobster that you can bring to eat at the cottage on the patio. Super goo
