Sipario is a wonderful holiday house in the historical centre of Modica. Recently restored to its original 1930s feel, when my grandparents bought it, the house offers all modern comforts. It has an elegant living space and a spacious kitchen, both with domed ceilings and direct access to the terrace, a terrace with spectacular views of Modica's baroque S. George Cathedral, a bathroom in the living area, a laundry and 3 comfortable en-suite bedrooms. Within the city, the house is strategically placed behind the Garibaldi Theatre and some 80 steps away from Modica's main high street, where there are shops, restaurants and bars. The name Sipario, which means Theatre Curtains, was inspired by the nearby theatre and refers to the theatrical effect of going through the doors of the terrazzo to be overwhelmed by a breathtaking view of the city.
There are plenty of shops offering fruit, meat, cheese as well as a supermarket close by.

This is almost certainly the best equipped house we have stayed in over many years and is situated in central Modica with stunning views from its extensive terrace. The owner Katia kept in touch with me from booking until arrival and could not have been mor helpful, even reserving a parking place for us on our arrival on a Sunday lunchtime (no mean feat!). Drinks on the splendid terrace were a pleasure and the superbly equipped kitchen encouraged us to cook and eat in.
The bedrooms were large, comfortable and air conditioned with good sized, modern ensuite shower and toilet.
Modica is within easy driving distance of all the beautiful baroque towns of S.E. Sicily and less than 2 hours from the Villa Romana at Piazza Armerina with its magnificent mosaics.
Bathing is easy at several clean sandy beaches and the Vendicari Nature Reserve is within easy reach.
Only 2 cautions - firstly the house is 80 steep steps up from the main street so you need to be reasonably fit and parking can be difficult (the best time seemed to be between 4 and 5pm.
We ate in one of the restaurants recommended by Katia - the Torre d'Oriente - and it was superb.
So long as you can cope with the climb then don't hesitate. This is a superb holiday house in a handsome town and with the advantage of a lovely owner.
