The Blue Heron is the perfect place to relax with your coffee on the deck as you listen to the loons calling on the lake. A cozy, low-key retreat and base for exploration of the Pike Lake Chain of six accessible lakes, just get in one of our canoes and go, or bring your own boat. What sets us apart from other rentals on the Pike lake Chain or surrounding area is that we live close by, so we are able to answer questions, solve problems, help with any situation that comes up, and lend a hand. We have, in the past, borrowed tweezers for tick removal, given a hand with docking a boat, loaned a cook book, some extra charcoal, you get the drift. We are here when you need us.

I am a small town girl from the UP of Michigan, I raised 6 children in Wisconsin and Minneapolis. My kids lived and loved every summer they spent here growing up. The Blue Heron is 1/2 of a property and is totally private. The entrance is separate, on the other side of the property, the parking is also separate. I am a knitter and a walker. I love little ones and dogs. My husband Dave is a bicyclist and down hill skier. I enjoy the less hilly variety, cross country. Dave has built timber frame homes, saunas, and less enjoyably remodeling homes. He is working on a design for a small sauna by the lake. Sauna will be finished this winter '2014'!!!! Picture is taken in 2013 at our sugar bush.
The Chequamegon Forest, where the Heron is located, is rich in streams, glacier lakes, red maples and sugar maples. (We like to make Maple Syrup ). We are particularly fond of the white birches. The Pike Lake Chain is home to the Muskie, a very prehistoric fish, and a definite challenge to catch. Hiking and biking are right at your fingertips and cross-country skiing in the winter. Bird watching is a new enjoyment of ours, eagle, osprey, kestrels, wild turkeys and vultures are seen often, as well as 'The Blue Heron'. White-tail deer and the occasional black bear, as well as otters, beaver and of course chipmunks. It is quiet here and the sunsets are spectacular. Hearing the loons on the lake and seeing the mothers carry their babies on their back is very special.
In winter, the beauty of the snow on the pines, as you walk through the winter wonderland and then retire to your cozy accommodation to sip hot chocolate, while the gentle flakes fall, bliss.
When you stand on the deck, especially in the early morning or evening, and see the lake thru the white birches, the sun shining on it or the big moon above it, you feel at peace with yourself and the world.
We are close to Hayward and the Birkebiner cross country ski race. We are midpoint between Duluth, Mn. and Bayfield, Wi.. The Brule cross country ski course. Hay rides at Bensons Horse Ranch. Snowshoeing or cross country skiing on the North country trail. You can enjoy all your Northern experiences with 'The Blue Heron' as your base!
