Reykjavik Apartment Rental Photos and Description

A Real Home To Make You Really Feel At Home.

The flat has all the cardinal directions with entrance facing south. On the whole, it is about 150 m². However, one of the rooms is a storage room, and another one a small office, so there are roughly 125 m² (1345 sq.ft.) at your disposal.

There are two bedrooms, one on the south side and one in the northwest part, sleeping two to four people. One of them has a Queen size bed, and the other a Double. The inner living room has a single bed, and if you need some extra sleeping space, a futon mattress can be provided.

The living/dining room is spacious and has a balcony that faces west and is well sheltered from the wind. That also makes it an ideal spot for a barbeque. It has a view to grown gardens and a studio apartment that is adjacent to the house.

The kitchen is east-facing. It's well equipped for cooking meals and perfect for having breakfast in the morning.

The bathroom has a full size bathtub and a shower, and has a window facing north, so the light is very nice.

The washing facility is in the basement and is shared with other inhabitants in the house. Should you need it, please let me know.

Internet access is free of charge.

The house has an old garden in the front.

Across the street, seen from the kitchen window, is the Klambratun Park where you'll find Kjarvalsstadir, the Reykjavik Art Museum named after the 20th century painter Johannes Kjarval. The park also has several outdoors sports facilities.

If you have a car, the street in front has enough free parking space. Public transport is regular, with a bus stop close by. It's an easy walk from the flat to the city center with all the shopping and culture it has to offer.

This is a real home for me, and I hope you will feel the same. I'm taking care of the property myself and am very much looking forward to your visit.

About Soffia Lara Karlsdóttir

I was born in Reykjavik and lived here for the first 20 years of my life in a family of artists. I went abroad and lived in France for many years. I also lived in London while studying complementary medicine. I am interested in the arts, architecture, health and general well-being. I work in the field of health and preventive medicine and have been interested in it for as long as I can remember. I also teach a mind management training technique at international courses in Europe and in the US as well as in Iceland. I really like people and I am interested in life in general. If you would like to explore different viewpoints, there are books in my library about many different approaches in this field - most of them in English, and some in French.

I used to work as a travel guide and I know the country quite well. I have two grown up children. My son works as a mountain guide in Iceland and my daughter is an actor, working and living abroad. I am lucky to have two grandchildren, that are 17 and 8-years-old.

When the apartment is occupied, I will be living close by, and can be easily reached most of the time. If I am not available, there will be a reliable replacement.

I'm happy to be of help during your stay in Reykjavik.

Why Soffia Lara Karlsdóttir chose Reykjavik

I chose Reykjavik because that's where my roots are. I have seen this city grow into what it is right now, a place of incredible cultural and entrepreneurial creativity.

What makes this apartment unique

The house, built in 1946, was designed by the well-known State Architect, G. Samuelson. When I first came into the house I felt that this was it. A feeling of space and harmony was the thing that really struck me. The living room had lots of space, the light was beautiful and I really wanted to live here. I had to renovate quite a bit.

What I really like about the apartment, is that it is so easy to relax there after a day of work or activities. I love the wooden oak floor that is heated, and to walk on it bare-foot is so lovely.

It's also really close to everything I need, which is great because then I can be more friendly to the environment and use the car less frequently.

The apartment is within an easy 10 minutes' walk from the BSI Central bus station where the FLYBUS from Keflavik International Airport comes in. City buses are within easy reach from the house as well as the city bus station Hlemmur, which is situated at the upper end of the main shopping street, Laugavegur. Last but not least the swimming-pool is a short walk away with a steam-bath and and an outdoor hot tub.

Superb flat in Reykjavik

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to have a week in this beautifully decorated and scrupulously clean apartment. The owner, Soffia, greeted us upon arrival, and patiently explained the details of the apartment, including the well-equipped kitchen. We had stayed at a number of owner-rented apartments over a period of 10 weeks all over Europe; this apartment turned out to be the clear highlight. It is located in a neighborhood convenient to downtown and across from a large park. While it is adjacent to a busy road, the apartment is well-insulated from sound, and traffic noise was never a problem. The apartment is so spacious it was easy for our family of four to spread out when we needed some solitude. Soffia has thoughtfully provided a great deal of information about Reykjavik and Iceland, including brochures and books, and she was happy to meet with us later in the week for coffee and a discussion of all things Iceland. The internet works very well, and there is a cd player and a radio. No tv, but we didn't miss it. Beds are comfortable, with good sheets and duvets. Many, many towels, and a washing machine in the basement.

We had a wonderful experience in Iceland, and this apartment contributed mightily. It was a joy to return to it after the days' outings. I recommend it without qualification to anyone looking for a splendid base in this fantastic country!

Owner's Response: Thank you! It was a pleasure having you and the boys. Not to mention that you took such good care of it. I want people to really feel at home and I am glad you did. It is a very convenient location whether you have a car or not as it is a short walking distance to downtown. Thanks, Sophia

Beautiful flat, great location, lovely owner

Stayed for a long weekend (2 couples). Very beautiful, spacious and warm flat, instantly felt like home. Only 15 min walk to the centre. The owner was really nice to deal with, overall a very good experience! Would definitely recommend, and if we come back, would love to stay in the same flat again. Family of 5 enjoys a wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (two adults and three young adult children) had a wonderful stay at this lovely apartment. It was very comfortable, roomy, well equipped, and within easy walking distance to all that downtown has to offer. It was a perfect start to our vacation. Our host was very helpful with directions and travel suggestions and was readily available. She was very reassuring as this was our first visit to Iceland and our first accommodation of our trip. I highly recommend this accommodation.

A beautiful apartment in Reykjavík

  • 4 of 5

A clean, airy space, very comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is bright and very well equipped. Soffia is a most gracious hostess; she helped us with initial shopping and a quick tour of the city, and was available to answer questions during the rest of our week there. The apartment is away from the downtown hubbub, in a residential neighborhood. No cafes or stores within a few blocks, but the art museum with a cafe is in the park across the street -- a good first jet-lagged stop. The big bus terminal with the FlyBus is just a few long blocks away. The smaller bedroom is near a busy street, but noise did not hamper sleep at all. The bed in that room is cozy, and there's only one small dresser, but that didn't detract from our enjoyment. The larger bedroom has more closet and storage space. Walking back to the apartment after dinner (usually going past the cathedral) was invigorating. Getting to the western part of the downtown is a longer walk, but we enjoy walking around cities, anyway. The three day-tours we took picked us up at the apartment. We'd be glad to stay there again.

Quick trip to Reykjavik

  • 5 of 5

Soffia is a wonderful host and made sure that we had everything we needed. The apartment is comfortable with lots of natural light. It worked very well for 3 adults (1 couple + 1). The location is a great base for Reykjavik and day tours of the area. The central bus station (BSI) is a 10 minute easy walk. City center is a 10-15 minute walk.

The beds are typical European size (smallish). The smaller bedroom gets some traffic noise - bring your earplugs - but did not get in the way of a good night's sleep.

We will definitely stay here again because of Soffia's excellent hospitality and the location.

Owner's Response: Dear Janine, Marc and Brenda. Thank you for your review. I appreciate it very much as you were my first guests. You were just wonderful and I would love to have you again. I am sorry about the traffic in the smaller bedroom. It differs from person to person and the time of the day. The nights are relatively quiet though. I don´t know about the children suitability. I would say it is not suitable for toddlers as there are art objects and designers furniture. Older kids are just fine. Thank you and happy traveling. All the best Soffia

Car: not necessary

The apartment is situated in the Nordurmyri, a residential area close to the city center. It is at less than ten minutes' walking distance from Hallgrímskirkja church, which was created by the former Architect of State, Gudjon Samuelson. He designed the first Reykjavik Indoor Swimming Pool in 1937 as well as many other official buildings.

What I like about the location is that I can be downtown in no time by foot and even quicker on my bicycle. I enjoy going to the Reykjavik Art Museum in the park by the house.

In Reykjavik, nature is never very far. Walking or cycling to the waterfront that surrounds the city is a pleasure. The Reykjavik Marathon in August is a must for runners! The Pearl (Perlan) houses a restaurant built on geothermal water tanks and gives a stunning view of Reykjavik. The Nautholsvik Beach is not far from there. The sea is warmed up with geothermal water! Bathing in the sea all year round has become a popular health promoting activity. The Service House in Nautholsvik was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. Reykjavik University is close to the beach, with a very well equipped gym in the basement and a nice restaurant/café just around the corner.

Cultural activities abound in the city - there are art museums and galleries to suit every taste and the music and live theater scene is vibrant; film and music festivals as well as Icelandic design and fashion events are held at different times of the year. Our brand new music and conference hall, Harpa, on the downtown waterfront, is definitely worth visiting. It just received the European Mies van der Rohe prize in architecture. Further west is the Old Harbor with shops and restaurant, art museums and galleries. The Reykjavik Flea Market is also close by. Just two minutes away is The Stone Village (Grjotathorp) with its tiny gardens and old, renovated wooden houses. I would stop by the Parliament, and City Hall on the lake (Tjornin) where you can also feed the ducks. The National Art Gallery, on the other side of the lake, is well worth a visit. There are many nice restaurants in town that offer a great variety of foods. There are endless possibilities of enjoyment in my beloved city - even the graveyards are of interest!

Seltjarnarnes is also worth visiting - with the Lighthouse of Grotta, a wonderful seashore, and the Cat's Bedrock (Kisuklappir) - a work of art and nature where you can bathe your feet! The golf course is just next door.

Videy island, with its history and works of art is a great day out. There are many things I have not mentioned, like horse riding, cave visits, glacier trips, river rafting, whale watching and all of those things you can do in the proximity of Reykjavik. If you are traveling in winter, a Northern Lights Hunt is a must! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
