PRIVATE SOLAR POWERED SEAFRONT HOUSE

Caye Caulker House Rental Photos and Description

The locals have named our house the Glass House. Once you step inside the open plan kitchen and living area, you will see why. Wrap around floor to ceiling windows and glass doors provide a stunning ocean view from practically every spot. The glass walls are oriented to take maximum advantage of the view while still providing privacy for the occupants.

This solar and wind powered house is surrounded on two sides by the Caribbean Sea. A dock with swim ladder offers easy access for swimming, snorkeling or just sunbathing. A well equipped kitchen and the stunning sea views from the open kitchen, living room and dining room area provide plenty of opportunities for relaxing, cooking and reading, all within sight of the water. Two separate bedrooms with queen size beds and a bathroom with shower complete the main floor. A separate third bedroom with queen size bed and full bath are on the second floor. A short bike ride into town provides restaurants, shopping, excursions, sport and night-life activities.

The unique rooftop 'crow's nest' offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire island. From this vantage point, one of the highest on the island, you can watch the planes land and spot the barrier reef only 1/4 mile off of the eastern shore of the island. Accessed via a ladder well and roof hatch, this relaxing spot always captures the breeze and is a perfect spot for wildlife spotting or romantic evening interludes.

Our caretaker, Michael, will meet you and get you settled in. He is a valuable resource for recommendations on restaurants, tour guides, fishing guides, etc. Michael can also arrange for a gasoline golf cart to rent.

I work in the federal government and my wife is a human resources manager. We have lived and worked overseas extensively. We don't get to our vacation house enough these days but hope to visit more often in the coming years.

Joe purchased this house in 2007

Set on the secluded side of this small tourist island in the Caribbean sea and surrounded on two sides by the water, we find that the house offers the perfect combination of privacy and seclusion while still having nightlife, entertainment and numerous restaurant options a short 1.5 mile bike-ride into town. Primarily english-speaking, stable and open to foreigners, Belize is a hidden destination worth exploring. The wind sports such as kite surfing, wind surfing and sailing and the diving are all world-class.

Taking a daily swim off of the dock followed by a short sun-bathing session is always the high-point of the day. The beautiful and ever-changing sunsets are a close second. Having a decent kitchen in which to cook up dishes using locally caught fish and lobster is also a favorite pastime.

I have nothing but positive things to say about "The Glass House", as well as Michael, the manager. The views were unbeatable, the complimentary bike rentals were an added bonus, we rode them back and forth into town a couple times a day. There were 5 of us girls, and we had plenty of space, and enjoyed every minute of our stay there, from cooking breakfast in the morning in the kitchen with floor to ceiling glass windows, to watching the sunset on the patio with a glass of wine. Loved it! Thank you so much Michael, I hope we can come visit again soon :)

BEAUTIFULLY RUSTIC GETAWAY SPOT!

  • 5 of 5
It was our first time in Belize and our first time staying in the glass house. It is absolutely beautiful! Everyone is so unique and a bit rugged, which was exactly what we were looking for. It was "off the beaten path", which we were also looking for but because of the rainy weather for half of our stay, it ended up being a little too inconvenient. Going in and out of town was a true adventue because of the excessive potholes between the house and town. The bikes provided by the house were key! We have such a fun time riding around town on the pink bikes.
As the description says, the house is solar powered, which we really enjoyed. The switches are on timers so you can't leave the lights on for more than 4 hrs without twisting the dial. Also, the showers and sinks are powered by a foot peddle. It became second nature and we missed the water system when we got back home to Washington DC.
There was a cell phone at the house to use in case of emergency or whenever it was just too rainy to get to town on bikes cabs would easily come get us. Michael, the housekeeper met us at the house when we got there and was SO helpful throughout our stay. He brought beer, bread, butter, etc. to the house before we got there, which was very helpful. He also brought a ton of mosquito coils that saved us! Yes, there are mosquitoes but honestly it wasn't as bad as people wrote in other reviews. On the days that were beautiful we LOVED our dock, the chairs on the dock, and being able to be away from everything. My boyfriend and I snorkeled under the dock. Although it didn't compare to our day long snorkel trip we took it was a great way to get more comfortable in the water. Next time, if we were to stay at this house again we would want more time and better weather :) If we knew the weather was going to be bad we might have stayed a little closer to town. Overall the house was wonderful and we loved being able to open up all the doors, play music, and relax!

PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
Me and my family had a great time, incredible sunsets and just far enough away from town where it felt very secluded. The house had everything we needed for a relaxing time in Caye Caulker.

ALL YOU NEED

  • 4 of 5
We loved our stay at the Glass House. Vacationers should be aware that it's a bit of a hike to town, but my friends and I relished the opportunity to stay active everyday and ride our bikes along the winding paths the hug the coastline. The proximity to the airstrip was something we found pretty fun, the planes aren't all that frequent and the noise isn't really all that loud. Since we were there in February, the lack of AC didn't bother us much. There was a refreshing, howling breeze basically every night which kept us cool. We never experience any issue with the electricity or water supply. Michael was fantastic. We would definitely stay here again.

A JEWEL ON CAYE CAULKER

  • 5 of 5
We always love staying on Caye Caulker and our time at the Glass House made this stay particularly enjoyable. We were pleasantly surprised that the electricity and water pressure were fine, despite the fact that we were off the grid. This end of the island is very quiet, affording a very relaxed stay, yet close enough by bike or taxi to the center of town. We even walked into town on 2 occasions.
The views were spectacular. It was amazing to lay in bed and look out the window at the ocean, listening to the waves. Swimming off the dock was great and watching the pelicans, egrets and blue herons became a fun pass time.
The house local liasson, Michael, was topnotch. He was very professional and attentive to any little need we had.
We highly recommend the Glass House for those who want a unique experience on a unique island.

CAYE CAULKER DONE RIGHT!

  • 5 of 5
The Glass House is a wonderful piece of real estate. We were concerned about the limitations of an "off the grid" property as we had never done that before. No worries - The Glass House delivered! The home is well appointed and the location suited our needs perfectly. True - it's essentially ON the airstrip but, for us, that was a plus... the kids loved waving to the planes from the dock as they landed. It is a bit isolated from the activities on the island... again - perfect for us. The golf cart taxis will get you anywhere your little heart desires - please look up a taxi driver named 'LuLu' - the guy was SO good to us! Sunsets are amazing from this place, either in the house or with a glass of wine on the dock (we enjoyed both). Internet is a little sketchy but what the heck do you want Internet for at a place like this? This property is worth every penny - book it!

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay. We also enjoy the proximity to the airstrip and watching the planes land and take off. Just to be clear - the planes do not fly over the house. The runway is 400 feet from the house. To give you an idea, our profile photo was taken from a plane landing on the airstrip. We hope to see you again next year.

Map

The Island of Caye Caulker is the lower-key, less hectic little brother to San Pedro Island (Ambergris Caye, or as Madonna calls it, La Isla Bonita) to the north. With a year-round population of around 1,000, many shops, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes, the car-free village of Caye Caulker provides plenty of diversions. Several dive shops and a wind-surfing and kite surfing school are available for the adventurous. Gas-powered golf carts can be rented for those who are looking to avoid any accidental exercise. Common cooking supplies and ingredients are readily available, but more exotic items can be found in San Pedro, a short 20 minute water taxi ride or 4 minute flight away. For the eco-minded, we recommend a wildlife tour provided by Dorothy Beverage, a local conservationist. Fishermen can use the pricey but excellent fishing guides such as Eloy to try their hand at the prized snook, bonefish, and permit fishing. Pick up and drop off at our dock can be arranged. Remember to catch some snapper to bring home for dinner.
