The apartment is in the heart of John's Landing on the Willamette River, just minutes from downtown and countless attractions and activities. Willamette Park is a quick walk and offers a variety of sporting activities, picnic areas and access for putting boats into the river. Portland's gourmet grocer, Zupan's, is within a mile, as is the waterfront restaurants Aqua Riva and the Old Spaghetti Factory. In the other direction, the aerial tram between South Waterfront and Oregon Health & Science University's campus on the hill is open to the public.
The Sellwood bridge, just a mile away, crosses the Willamette and puts you at the Oaks Bottom wildlife area with walking trails through areas where you'll see eagles, osprey, hawks, ducks, geese and many other species. (And, somewhat incongruously, the vintage Oaks Bottom Amusement Park, a delight to young and old.) The main trail is for bikers and walkers along the Springwater Corridor which in four miles takes you to downtown Portland or, going the other direction, runs 20 miles to Gresham through more natural areas.
Downtown Portland attractions include a full array of cultural and educational activities, including the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, live theater, opera, symphony and ballet, art galleries and the Portland Art Museum. Portland has a Chinese Garden, located downtown, and the Japanese Garden, located in Washington Park, where you will also find the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, the Children's Museum and numerous hiking trails, some taking you to Forest Park, the largest urban forest in the United States. Sporting venues are located minutes from downtown - the Rose Quarter, home of the NBA Trail Blazers play, and Jeld Wen field home of major league soccer team, the Portland Timbers.
The downtown Portland Park Blocks at Portland State University host the Portland Farmers' Market weekends except during the winter. And branches of the Farmers' Market appear in various locations around the city.
If you're looking for antiques, take the Sellwood Bridge to the Sellwood neighborhood - just above the Oaks Bottom wildlife areas. The neighborhood offers a wide range of restaurant choices and other shopping opportunities.
The city offers various transportation choices, including the streetcar, which begins half a mile from the apartment and runs through downtown Portland to the Pearl and Nob Hill neighborhoods in Northwest Portland. The MAX, the light rail line, can take you to the airport or the train station as well as suburban neighborhoods to the east, west and north of downtown.
