Photos and Description of the Albunuelas vacation cottage rental Casa Idrisi - 2 bedrooms, La Joya - 1 bed, beautiful location near Granada

Just south of Granada, beyond the 'Sigh of the Moor' pass (so called because here the last Moorish king paused on his journey into exile, and sighed for the beautiful city he had lost) lies a valley so beautiful that it was named by the Moors 'the Valley of Joy' - El Valle de Lecrin. Here in the traditional white village of Albunuelas, overlooking the dramatic Rio Santo gorge, we have two lovingly restored houses for you to choose from. In these houses you will find traditional beam and rush ceilings, local hand-made tiles and Moorish arches combined with discreet comforts such as limitless hot water and underfloor heating in winter. Both houses have roof terraces with breathtaking views of the Rio Santo gorge and the Sierra de Albunuelas. Relax here among the glossy leaved orange trees and drink in the vistas of the distant mountains. Car access right to the houses is not possible, but it is possible to park in the square nearby. The village has shops, tapas bars & and a restaurant.

Details for Casa Idrisi 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 2 Bathrooms

2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin). Upside down house with living room at top to take advantage of the fabulous views. Many thoughtful details - traditional beamed ceilings, interesting alcoves & a stunning Moorish bathroom are there to be enjoyed, as well as the invisible comforts such as underfloor heating in winter & good showers with plentiful hot water. The living room also has a wood-burning stove for atmosphere in winter. Fans are provided in summer. Idrisi is named after Europe's first mapmaker Al Idrisi the Moor - whose route took him through Albuñuelas & along much of what is now the GR7 walking route from Algeciras to Istanbul. Idrisi has the largest roof terrace of any of our village houses & boasts unparalleled views - not only down the valley to the Alpujarras, but also across to the Rio Santo gorge & up the valley to the Sierra de Albuñuelas. The living room and master bedroom also enjoy stunning views. Casa Idrisi also shares our 'secret garden' amid the orange orchards.

25 minutes south of the Moorish city of Granada, the white village of Albuñuelas, in the beautiful Lecrin Valley, is redolent with the Moorish history of the area. Among the flower draped houses in the narrow cobbled streets you will find the remnants of a 14th century Arab tower, communal stone wash houses and elaborately tiled fountains, as well as a 17th century Archbishop's palace. The Lecrin Valley is midway between Granada - home to, flamenco, tapas, and the famously beautiful Alhambra Palace - and the secret coves of the Costa Tropical where the chiringuitas cook fresh fish right on the beach. Walks here, begin right from the door. The GR7 (famous walking route from Algeciras to Istanbul) passes right by the house and there is horse-riding in the village on beautiful Andalucian grey horses. Fishing and birdlife too. Life changes slowly here, where the houses are covered in bougainvilla and jasmine and the donkeys still wend their way to work among the orange groves.

Further details for this vacation cottage rental in Albunuelas, Spain

Local Facilities: The lower barrio of Albuñuelas has a bar/restaurant of some character and the local bread van and fish hawkers visit each morning to sell their wares in the street just below the church. The upper barrio, a short walk away, has several shops, a bank, bars and restaurants and a weekly market on Thursday mornings. There are several nice swimming pool/restaurants in nearby villages. Guided walks are available from local English residents which start from the village and can take in items of historical interest (Moorish, Roman, Iberian) as well as the flora and fauna of the valley. Ideal for relaxation and perfect for walkers or bird watchers. The epic GR7 walk from Algeciras to Istanbul passes the door and one of the GR7 markers can be seen upon the wall. The lush valley just beyond the house is rich with oranges, almonds, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, and prickly pears. In the spring the air is perfumed with orange and almond blossom.

Fishing: The beautiful Lecrin Valley is also great base for fishing with huge carp in the Embalse de Beznar and barbel fishing in the Rio Santo. Nearby, the Embalse de Quentar, north-east of Granada & further into the Sierra Nevada, is easily accessible despite its remote location. It has steep sides but with several flat areas ideal for a range of fishing styles. A little further still on the same road is the Embalse de Frederico Abellan. This is bigger and more open in aspect with large shallow coves all round. Both have carp, barbel, trout and bass & the restaurant built into the cliffs at the Frederico Abellan has a fantastic view to boot. Contact us for details on how to easily obtain a Spanish fishing licence.

Tapas Tours, Mountain Bikes & Local Guides: The local tradition of free tapas or snacks when you buy a drink began with practice of covering a beer with a slice of bread to keep flies off. In time the tapas (literally meaning lid or cover) became more elaborate and delicious. However Granada is the only remaining corner of Spain where the tradition has been maintained and the tapas are still free. Contact us for more information about some of the best local tapas bars in the Lecrin Valley to start you on your tapas tour... Or please enquire if you would like to book a tour of some of the best hidden Tapas Bars in Granada with Gayle Mackie, author of '100 Tapas Bars in Granada'. We can also help with mountain bike hire and local guides - please enquire.

Other Activities: Historic Granada and the famous Alhambra Palace are about 25 mins by car, the Costa Tropical 35 mins, & the Sierra Nevada Ski resort is about 50 mins
