We are native Montanans, Joe is a CPA, I am a retired Insurance Agency owner. We have invested in farms & ranches for the past 20 years. Between us we have 8 children, ages 12 to 32.

Melanie Vankoten- Eve purchased this cabin in 2005

Both Montanan natives, we moved from the eastern side of the state to the Valley many years ago. Living in Whitefish & Rollins before settling in Lakeside, we decided Flathead Lake is our favorite place to be summer or winter. The views are amazing in any season, the lake an ever-changing tapestry with wind, snow & ice, sunshine & blue skies, fog, rain, sunrises & sunsets. We are on the lake for summer fun but also close to ski areas in the winter....

WOW! Montana at its finest! The Flathead Lake is amazing area .... whatever the season, the views change daily! Central location for you to base from while you enjoy your summer/fall/winter vacation plans.

Summer fun in Glacier country

  • 4 of 5
Just got back from a marvelous stay at Flathead Lake. Mel and Joe were great hosts, assisting us with various things, and even providing a great welcoming basket of goodies for us to enjoy! The location is pristine, and in the best spot on the entire lake. Town of Lakeside is full of friendly, helpful, and modest people. No elitism here. Just hard working people trying to assure your pleasure, while visiting this piece of heaven. Hiked Glacier National, a short 45 minutes away, and saw the beautiful town of Whitefish, and Kalispell. Whitefish lake is a must also, and can be reached in 30 minutes from the cabin. Tamarak Brewery in town is great. We purchased a growler and filled it with a fresh new brew every couple of days. Pulled our boat to Flathead, and the dock and facilities at this cabin are wonderful with great mooring, dock lights, and great ladder to lake providing for wonderful late afternoon swims. Can't imagine going a year without returning to this special place. Oh, and buy the way, returned with over 25 pounds of Mackinaw fillets in the cooler. What fun!
See you all next year........

Peaceful cabin

  • 4 of 5
We had a great week in Flathead and enjoyed staying in this cute cabin. It was exceptionally clean and had everything we needed. Many hours spent relaxing on the dock, and fishing. The location is peaceful and quiet, but close enough to bike ride, or run into Lakeside.
Thanks!

Better than Advertised

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I (and our 2 dogs) stayed at this property for a week in July. Everything wound up being better than we expected. The owners were extremely accommodating, pleasant, and easy to deal with. It really shows that they pay attention to the little things to ensure their guests have an excellent stay. We have stayed at a number of rentals near Glacier National Park over the years, and this one ranks among the top. The location is great, as it is a short drive to the park, but also close enough to attractions at the south end of flathead lake to make them worth the drive. (Miracle of America museum, National Bison rangw, and even a trip to the prison museum in Deer Lodge) The view of the lake and the mountains beyond the lake from the property and the dock are amazing. At sunset you can see all of the properties across the lake lighting their nightly campfires. Overall, fantastic trip while staying at a fantastic place!

Wouldn't Recommend it!

Wouldn't Recommend it!
  • 1 of 5
We would not recommend this place and had a horrible experience with the landlords of this property. Many shortcomings and it is important for people to know! The previous reviewers must have very low standards! When you are paying a lot of money like we did, you expect a really nice place, this does not deliver. However, what really upset us was the landlords kept more than half of our damage deposit for their already in disrepair dock and accused us of damaging it! Completely, 100% false, in fact we noticed the rotting falling apart wooden dock our first night and just chalked it up to the neglect we had seen throughout since our arrival. This place is in need of work. Here are some very important things renters NEED to know.
-The cabin is right next door to the owners, no privacy
-Awful bed, hardly slept, pillows as thin as paper
-Cabin doors do not lock
-No outdoor grill. They had a dirty small portable BBQ left of on the deck, one you'd have to crouch to use. Too dirty to use and for $2000+ rental we expected a full size and clean BBQ
-Dead bug/flys behind the blinds on the sliding glass door
-Inside of the drawers with utensils was very dirty
-The outdoor deck and chairs we dirty and dusty and had to be wiped down
-Lots of dog poo we had to navigate around the cabin
-No firepit
-No instructions on what was expected of us upon check out ( garbage, lock up, etc) we weren’t sure what to do. They say it is because they were away when we checked out, however one might expect some sort of protocol to be provided. The bottom line is, the cabin is in a nice location and thats about it. The experience we had with the owners accusing us of damage to their dock and keeping more than half of our damage deposit was so upsetting and forced us to write this negative review. I shared our thoughts on the cabin (as above) with the owners in the hopes to help them out with future rentals and I didn’t plan to write a negative review as it’s not my style however after I shared my thoughts privately they informed us they were keeping 75% of our damage deposit and relentlessly accused us of damage to their dock. I can tell you, we are experienced boaters and there is NO way this rotting dock got damaged because of us, absolutely NO way. It was rotting and falling apart long before we arrived. After the short comings of the cabin itself and then, them accusing us of damage was so awful and left us with a really bad experience. We had to warn renters.

Owner's Response: While it is unfortunate this renter was so distraught over the partial deposit we retained for their damage to our dock, this was the first incident in our 4 years of renting to guests where there was damage. Our Lake-approved docks are 4 years new with rubber bumper protectors all around. We are a private homeowner who does take pride in our properties and in our guests' satisfaction in our Custom Log Cabin rental. PLEASE NOTE : this is a log cabin in the woods on the lake. Weather can change at a moment's notice & anything outside is subject to lake storms. Insects do come inside with open doors. There is no daily maid service provided, and our cleaners, while very thorough, may occasionally miss something, which we are happy to correct when called to our attention! Usually we are on the premise for a simple check out. We are happy to assist our guests with reasonable requests - I am reachable either by cell or internet wherever we are!............ Any guests who are wanting a cozy Custom Log Cabin for an outdoor Flathead Lake experience or for a base for a Montana adventure, we can provide! Contact Owner for any questions.

Flathead Lake Simplicity

  • 4 of 5
A much belated review, we had the pleasure of staying here for a week about 2 months ago -- catching the very tail end of the best summer had to offer! The setting was simple, serene + beautiful. Melanie + Joe are great, accommodating + thoughtful hosts! Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to spend time together because of scheduling conflicts.

The cabin was clean + well appointed (minus a few kitchen items that maybe only we hardiest of cooks need while vacationing). We really enjoyed the access to the small paddle boat + spent quite a bit of time on the lake the first few days! Reading while sitting out on the patio with a cup of coffee set us out on the right tone every morning + a glass of wine compliments of the host at sunset ended every day perfectly.

We really enjoyed the Vitamin Cottage for groceries in Kalispell on our way in from the airport. Day trips to White Fish, Big Fork + Glacier were incredible! We can't wait to go back.

Thanks Mel + Joe!

Our stay at Flathead Lake

  • 5 of 5
Melanie & Joe,

Thank you for renting your Lakeside cabin to us on our recent trip to Montana! The setting on the lake is fantastic and our stay on Flathead lake was very enjoyable. Your cabin was clean, quiet and very comfortable. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck overlooking the lake and the sunsets were absolutely beautiful! We also spent some time on the dock after dark star gazing and were blown away at how much more are visible compared to the city. The close location to the town of Lakeside was very convenient for groceries and dining and other activities.

Thanks again!

Dan & Alisa
