The Madeira Region:
Here in the Atlantic Ocean, not too far from the centre of Europe, we find the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. The archipelago is famous for its friendly people, exceptional natural beauty and mild climate. Madeira Islands are just a short trip from Europe, to a destination where you can combine holidays on the beach, in the mountains or in the city. Madeira and Porto Santo are the ideal places to relax and restore the balance of mind and body that you need to face the stress of daily life. Madeira (Wood) is a beautiful verdant island. It is Portugal's 'Jewel in the Atlantic'. The island is a haven for anyone who enjoys walking, whether your taste runs to gentle strolls or hard core hiking. Madeira’s system of irrigation channels, known as levadas, carry water down from the mountains on gentle gradients. These levadas provide a ready-made system of trails. There are 1300 miles of them, crisscrossing the island, and they have level footpaths running along their entire length.
Ponta do Sol:
The west coast is the sunniest coast in Madeira, which is why its beaches are very popular with locals and visitors alike. Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Madalena do Mar, Calheta, Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar have excellent access to the sea. This marina of Lugar de Baixo was built to encourage the development of water sports and has moorings for 300 ships from eight to 25 metres. also has a waiting dock, a ramp for beaching small boats, shops, restaurants, nautical facilities, a playing field, a gym and swimming pools. If you’re going to be in the area, take the opportunity to explore Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo. This is a lagoon near the marina, with a leisure pavilion and an ecotourism pavilion, using the lagoon’s natural habitat and Madeira’s unique fauna and flora. This municipality, with its excellent seaside location, is considered the island’s warmest area, where the sun shines for longest. The fertile soil has always been used for the so-called rich crops.
