I first visited South haven almost 12 years ago and was fortunate enough to rent this place, which, at the time was a diamond in the rough. I immediately fell in love with the innate charm of the house and the area. Fortunately, it was for sale! As a Chicago based Interior Designer with over 22 years of experience, this bungalow cottage has been a labor of love for me. Over the years, I have renovated the home room by room, tweaking every detail beginning with the classic rear terrace and culminating with the addition of the charming front porch. The landscaping continues to evolve.
Sarah Van Assche purchased this cottage in 1992
South Haven has a unique flavor. With its perfect white beaches and sunsets, wonderful local shops and restaurants, Farmers' Market, local entertainment and nightlife, it still manages to retain a great small town 'Mayberry' personality. For me, it's the perfect place to chill -- winter, spring, summer or fall. Whenever first arrive in South Haven and unlock my door, I just say 'aahhhh!' Pure Michigan.org! There's no better place to refresh and renew.
I love the architecture of my home, especially the arched doorways and groin ceilings. I love my yard with all the beautiful year round perennials that offer so much color and joy. The glider on the front porch is my favorite spring/summer/fall hang-out. My reward after a long, lovely day working in the garden is a chilled glass of lemonade or white wine. The porch is the perfect venue to sit, relax and watch the world go by. No one who passes by fails to say hello. That makes it even more special!
We stayed at this charming home for a July 4th holiday get-away and it was the perfect location. We loved walking into town for morning coffee, being able to stroll to the water front, bike ride through the town, or just cook out and relax in the back yard. The home is clean, well-stocked, decorated and furnished to provide a very charming and relaxing environment -- weather you want to relax by the fire place, snooze on a soft sofa, or BBQ in the yard. And you're so close to town and the beaches that you can get around on foot, bike or car. We drove to the nearby blueberry farm, explored antique shops around the area enjoyed exploring the quaint South Haven downtown after a day at the beach.
We loved this cottage! it was a perfect cozy place for hanging out, relaxing and enjoying the beach only a few blocks away and the charming, historic shopping district. It was an easy walk to the main street which has loads of restaurants, boutiques, a cheap movie theatre with all the family movies, and then a short walk to the harbor where you can get great burgers or sit on the boat and enjoy a lovely cocktail anytime of day.
The rooms were comfortable and the kitchen worked well for us. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch and enjoying a glass of wine watching the sunset and having breakfast on the patio in the garden.
This house was perfect for me and my girlfriends. It was immaculate, charming and just a short walk to downtown and the beach. Just a short drive from Chicago--but it seems like a world away. Description and photos are accurate; but you will feel the designer ambiance more so in person. My first time in the bungalow was over the July 4th Holiday and it is a memory I will cherish forever. Can't wait to go back. Great for a small family or a group of girlfriends.
This cottage was exactly what we hoped for, for our family's stay in South Haven. It was stocked with everything we needed and wanted to make it our home away from home for the week. The house is well situated for a moderate walk or short drive to a great children's park, the beach and the main shopping area. It is also easily accessible to the highway for exploring other near by towns.
This was our second year for our small family in South Haven. The last cottage we stayed in, although lovely, was a distance away from South Beach and downtown South Haven. I booked Sanssoucci for its proximity to the beach and shopping. It was exactly as it was advertised - about five to six blocks to both areas and it was completely charming. We did not want for anything in this home - the kitchen was more than adequately equipped, there were old games and a great selection of books, as well as wifi and satellite TV. But it was not only practical but it was beautifully appointed with lovely rooms and finishings. It made relaxing very easy because you knew Sarah had taken great care in decorating her home. Despite what a previous reviewer said, we had no problems with cat hair (the house was very clean). The only thing I would suggest is if you have small children that you put away any of the many beautiful breakable treasures she has in her home. Thanks for helping to make our week away so wonderful, Sarah. You were so easy to work with, and we appreciated you opening up your gorgeous home to our family.
Sans Souci is a charming cottage within walking distance to the beach and town. We had exactly the type of vacation we were looking for--peaceful and easy in a lovely atmosphere. All the "ingredients" were there from the tasteful decorating, beautiful landscaping and patio, comfortable furnishings, and immaculate housekeeping.
Six blocks south of downtown South Haven, four blocks east of South Beach and Kids Corner. Walk to shops, dining, movies, harbor and beach, Farmers' Market. Quiet, family oriented neighborhood.
