The Lil House is a four bedroom, three bath, house on stilts with a porch all the way around allowing for a breeze at anytime of the day or night. It has the best view of the sunset on Dauphin Island allowing for memorable front porch memories. The sandy yard with seawall just feet from the porch allows for the best of both island worlds--sand fun for the kids, and boat access for the sports enthusiast. The fishing from seawall/boardwalk is great both day and night. Dolphins are frequent visitors at Lil House and can often be seen swimming in front of the house. So whether you are a family with small children, or snowbirds looking for tranquility, or a fishing afficienado, the Lil House is for you!
I am a 49 year old mother of two middle schoolers living in Mobile, Alabama with my husband, Kevin. I own a coffee shop in the historic part of town called Cream & Sugar Café. We live just a short 35 minute drive from the island where we love ALL water sports and just watching the sunsets and dolphins....that never gets old!
Susan Carley purchased this house in 1974
My grandmother, Lil, built this beautiful island house in the early 70's and I grew up coming to the house every summer with my six cousins and two siblings. We have fond memories of running the seawall chasing porpoises, fishing morning and night, and crabbing with chicken bones with my grandmother. Now my children run the seawalls, catch our dinner, and swim in the very water that we did as children.
My uncle designed the house to be like a steamboat with a porch 'deck' all the way around the house, doors in every room that open out onto the 'deck', and water views from every window. The front porch with swing and rocking chairs offers the best sunset view on the island. It also sits so close to the seawall that the adults can sit in the shade (of upstairs or downstairs deck) and watch the kids as they swim, ski, or kayak in front of the house. Because the house is situated on a cul-de-sac, the children can ride their bikes and play safely with other neighborhood kids. The house faces the Mississippi Sound allowing for good fishing and boat access, but is directly across the street from Lafitte Bay which is a no wake zone and allows for great, safe place for kayaking or swimming. The house is just a short two block walk from the Gulf front beaches which gives you the option of a day at the beach or a day of watersports. The kids will also love sandcrabbing on the beach at night!
Can't say enough about how wonderful this house is. We've been coming to Ft. Morgan/Dauphin Island for 15 yrs.....sometimes twice a year and stayed in many houses and dealt with many rental agencies. We decided to go with VRBO this time and were so pleased with everything. Susan, the owner with whom we dealt with is great and if there's any issues with the house (which there were none) easy to reach. This house feels like you're sitting right on the water...covered decks on 4 sides....sand from the deck to the boardwalk. We caught many fish in spite of the rainy weather we had the 1st week. We had already booked another house the following week in Ft. Morgan right on the Gulf. The last day there we weren't quite ready to return to Arkansas so called Susan and she said the house was available this week.....so here we are again and having an equally wonderful time. Difference in this house and most we've stayed at over the years is the extra touches. Fully equipped with everything you would need. Toiletries, spices, dishwashing soap, laundry soap, etc. etc. and much ! We've never had that in any other house we've rented. It was only my husband and I this trip but we plan to come back in Sept and bring our family since it has room for plenty. Our dogs loved it. Thanks Susan and family for the best vacation we've had. We'll be back!!!
Always a great time on the island! This is the 4th time at this house. and we love it! Perfect for us. The house has everything we need, all we bring is food and change of clothing. The teens love the downstairs room, and even when the weather has us inside, the view from the windows gives us an ever changing scene over the bay.
My husband, 10 month old, and I visited over New Year's. The weather was a little bit cold (for half the week, half the week it was perfect), but Lil' House was wonderful. Waking up each morning to a beautiful view of the water was exquisite, and my little guy was delighted by the pelican visitors. We were looking for a veg out vacation, so on good weather days we put the baby in a pack and play in the front porch with some toys, and my husband sat in the rocking chair and read and I painted. However, there are bikes, a kayak, and some water toy type things for those looking to be active. If it's warm enough to swim, there's a ladder off the dock, and you're easily within walking distance of the beach on the other side of the island. Dauphin Island is a bit remote, which means less restaurants and stores, but more privacy and peace. And the house decorations are adorable. (I even spotted a couple of Cutco knives in the kitchen.)
We had a wonderful time on Dauphin Island and at the "Lil Home" The camp was adorable, comfortable and very clean. All important/needed amenities were provided and more than adequate and made the stay feel like being at home. The only recommendation would be to bring your own grill if planning to bbq since the one provided is small/old as stated in the write up by the owners. We definitely recommend staying in this lovely space and plan on returning next time for a longer visit!
Really enjoyed the house and the size was perfect. Having 3 bathrooms was really nice and the view was beautiful. Son really enjoyed his space downstairs with his own tv.
We loved our stay that this home we will be back and we can't wait it really made our day with the welcoming basket filled full of goods that was really nice and the card to thanks for a great stay!
