Driving from the airport to Casa da Levada:
Leaving the airport you drive in the direction of Machico, passing the village of Machico you are now heading to Canical. On coming through the tunnel to Canical you will see immediately on your right the exit for (Pico do Facho), turn right off the slip road . Ahead you are now looking at the old road to Canical lined with big palm trees on each side and in a minute you will find the villa on your right. ( 8 km ). Although the great new motorway and tunnel system is very near it goes through the mountain and cannot be seen or heard leaving you with a quiet and peacefull location overlooking the beautiful fishing village of Canical.
Canical Village:
Canical has a modern public swimming pool equipped with sun loungers restaurant and coffee shop.The sea front has many restaurants cafe,s mini markets and small shops.The whale museum is worth a visit and gives you a good insight into the history of this once important whaling port. A major supermarket can be found just off the motorway outside Machico (modelo). Canicals main industry are agriculture and fishing. The peninsula just behind the village ( Ponta de Sao Lourenco) is a nature reserve and stretchs out West for five kilometers, a very popular walk. Being the oldest parish of Madeira island it has a very rich religious tradition. On the third weekend of September fishermen go out to sea in the procession of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Mercy). Colorfully decorated boats sail around in the bay of Canical.
