Great house for a relaxing family break in the sun
We were a party of 5 visiting the region in August. Myself, husband and three boys - aged between 10 and 13.
I chose the property as it had its own pool, 4 bedrooms (so the boys could each have their own) and proximity to local attractions.
After a very long drive - stopping for two nights en route - we arrived at the property. The agent had left us the keys so we let ourselves in and checked out the house.
The area is very quiet. It is in a residential area, 5 minutes drive from Carcassonne. There is a large supermarket just 5 minutes drive in the other direction -which I used frequently.
The house was very spacious - much bigger than I was expecting from the advertisement. The boys' rooms were all down one end of the house, and we took the large room at the other end. There were two separate toilets - and a large bathroom with a double sink, shower, and corner bath. This meant that we didn't have to fight too much between us to get in a bathroom!
The house was well furnished, with sufficient sunloungers, outdoor dining table etc. There was a BBQ and a swing/slide set. (suitable for small children, i worried when our big kids went on it due to their weight..).
Bath towels and beach towels were provided for us. There was a washing machine and dryer, dishwasher, full over, separate hob etc. Fridge freezer and a huge freezer in the utility room. I found it very useful having the washing machine as it meant that we didn't have to take lots of clothes with us, just enough for 4/5 days.
The only complaint I would have is that the cleanliness was not quite up to my standards. I did clean all the toilets on arrival more than once, but there was still a lingering odour. I guess previous guests weren't drilled in toilet etiquette!!
We had a fantastic stay - and would quite happily stay in the villa again. We loved having the freedom to come and go when we pleased, use the pool or watch dvds. In a hotel if one kid wants to swim then the whole family has to trek down to the pool or beach , but in a private villa then everyone can do their own thing.
Lac de la Cavayere is very close, but we only had a short visit. We did plan an afternoon there, but it was on a day when the temp was 37C so we chose to hang out 'at home' instead so we could go in the shade. Parc Australien is close too, interesting enough for a trip.
